Decent sync cable.......2006-11-28

I like the idea that it's retractable but it didn't fix my problem with the hot sync issue I thought I had. I think it's something in my palm but this item is compatable with the Zire 71 and would power it. It's a little bit of a tight squeeze to connect the cable to the palm but it works.

A wonderful aftermarket cable.......2006-09-02

I bought one of these for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, the USB cradle that came with my Palm m130 has always been very finicky; unless the A/C adapter is plugged in just right, it won't recharge my m130, even though it sometimes appears like it is (the charging icon displays on the Palm, but immediately after disconnecting from the cradle the meter indicates the same charge level as before). Second, the bulky cradle and adapter are not much fun to travel with.

I almost settled on a replacement cradle, but balked at the cost versus the aftermarket alternatives. Eventually I decided to give this one a shot. I'm sure glad I did!

I've been using it daily for a handful of weeks, and it has proven to be very dependable. For whatever reason, the first few times I tried I couldn't get the m130 to sync to my computer; since then, it has worked every time. And it has been a very reliable charger all along.

I try to be very gentle with the cable. The wires are quite thin and fragile, so being careful is very important. In contrast, connecting the m130 to the connector requires a firm, but measured, approach. I have the best luck when I lay both on a flat surface and slide them together, making sure the m130 is firmly seated in the connector. (A very gentle side-to-side rocking motion will confirm whether both sides of the connector mated to the Palm correctly.) Come to think of it, the synchronizing problems I had at first might have been a connection issue; I can't be certain, though.

Overall, I am extremely pleased by my decision to purchase this cable. It fits my needs for reliability and portability. A brilliant gadget!

Palm m130 using Windows XP Home and Windows 98.......2005-02-19

It is up to the purchaser to determine whether his/her handheld device is compatible with the Zip-Linq.

Works perfectly with my Palm m130 using Windows XP Home and Windows 98 with Palm software already installed and running on both computers. Excellent for travel.

The Zip-Linq will not recharge the Palm battery as quickly as the Palm Cradle, and the computer must be turned on in order for the Zip-Linq to charge the Palm through the computer's USB port.

The Zip-Linq is somewhat fragile, so handle it carefully when inserting or removing it from the Palm. Also be gentle when extending or retracting the Zip-Linq cable.

If the purchaser buys the Zip-Linq cable to replace the original Palm cradle, there should be no glitches if he/she has already performed HotSync one or multiple times using the original Palm cradle. It SHOULD be as simple as replacing the original Palm cradle with the Zip-Linq cable.

One reviewer has indicated that his/her Palm data was lost the first time he/she attempted to use HotSync with the Zip-Linq. I'm not sure why this would happen if the Zip-Linq is compatible with the handheld in question, but one could always perform a HotSync with the original Palm cradle before using the Zip-Linq for the first time. Once the user gets comfortable with the device and its functionality, this precautionary measure should be unnecessary with future use of the Zip-Linq.

If the user inserts Zip-Linq into the USB port to run HotSync for the very first time (ie., initial install or reinstall of Palm software), Windows may not be able to read the Zip-Linq through the USB port initially. In the case of Windows XP Home, this writer believes this has nothing to do with the Zip-Linq cradle. Windows XP Home simply needs to find the correct driver from the Palm software in order to run HotSync through the USB port. When the Zip-Linq is inserted in the USB port, Windows XP Home may indicate that it has "Found New Hardware" and then prompt the user to allow the operating system to find the driver that will be used to read the USB port. XP may prompt the user to insert the Palm software CD so that it can find the right driver. This does not mean that Windows XP Home will reinstall the Palm software; it will simply look for the right file to run HotSync. It is a step-by-step procedure (ie., simple). In the case of Windows 98 and first use of HotSync, the operating system may not automatically be able to find the driver. In this case, it would be best to run HotSync on the original Palm Cradle before using the Zip-Linq.

Good travel cable, but NOT compatible with Tungsten C.......2003-10-22

Although this cable lists compatibility with Tungsten W and T, and it will charge a Tungsten C model, it will not sync with C models. This information is buried on the support pages instead of the compatiblity page of the manufacturer's web site. I would have given this 4 stars if they had disclosed this.

If it had worked with my palm, I would say that it is very compact and light weight. It is similar in size to a white board marker when reeled in. The cable isn't long at 30 inches, but usually that is enough. Highly recommended as a compact alternative to a cradle.

The plug where the usb connector is attached to the cable looks like it might not last forever cause the cable is so thin and you usually accidentally push on the connection when plugging in the cable. But if you want compact for travel or as a backup to IR this is the choice.

OK I bought mine for $69 at Christmas, it quit playing entirely after 6 months. The warranty is only for 2 months. After that you pay shipping plus $50 for a refurbished unit. I have an RCA tv that has been in the shop 3 times, so this means NO MORE RCA.

I have the same problem with this player, after using it since Christmas, it just stopped reading any DVDs. Called "support" only to learn that the 2 hour warranty was up so I could pay $50 for a replacement. I'll just go buy a cheap $30 one at Walmart since I know they actually work for more than 4 months. No more RCA for me.

My fiancee received this exact DVD player for Christmas. We have used it pretty regularly on the weekends since Christmas. After watching 2 dvds in one day, we tried to watch a third but kept getting the error message that "no disc is being detected". My fiancee called RCA and after waiting on hold for a half hour to talk to a customer service representative, they informed him that if he put out 50$, it would be fixed. I told him he might as well just buy another dvd player. I hope if anybody buys this make and model of dvd player, the same problem does not happen to you.

I have had this DVD player for 6 weeks. So far I have played VCD's, SVCD's and DVD's all without complication. I am planning to try homemade DVD's soon. Hopefully, they will go as smoothly as the other formats I have tried.

Completely random blocking of functionality- sometimes I can click a link and it works sometimes I can't, sometimes I can send an email sometimes I can't. Problem goes away when not using SMC router. Repeated emails to customer support are repeatedly IGNORED. Would NEVER buy from them again.

GET SOMETHING ELSE!.......2004-09-29

I saw some of the reviews on Amazon and thought that this router may be worth a shot.. So I got it.

Installation was a hassle, and I still can't get it to setup right. I have DSL, the router doesnt like to work for anything but "Cable".. I have my DSL running as "cable" with a bunch of tweaks just to get it to even see my modem. It works now, just not very well.

The settings were as basic as it gets, with no real 'power user' setup (what I want). Their "advanced" setup is nothing more than more wizards and generic settings. For most users, this would be nice, but if you are a power user, you will be disappointed with how generic the settings are.

Onto usage. Well, It seems to be great for my wired connections. My ethernet connections haven't dropped, and the router itself hasn't needed to be booted in the butt (or rebooted, if you will).

Now, wireless... Well, if you are looking at this router for wireless connectivity and not much else, then hit "back" right now. This router is a wireless flop. My laptop is sitting in it's recharging area (about 7 feet from the router).. I'm picking up a signal of 78%.

When I first installed the card in my laptop and 'refreshed' the list of wireless networks, where was my network? Here? No. There? No. Apparently the 'auto' channel selector doesnt work right, after setting the channel to 11, it picked up the faint signal. As for interference or maybe crosstalk, no. I only own 1 other 2.4ghz device, and thats my PC-TV transmitter. I turn that off when I'm not using it. I live about half a mile from any neighbors, so thats not the problem. I have tried all of the channels I have, and all of them show a poor signal.

While the signal quality lacks horribly, the signal length is somewhat better. I walked around outside for a while with my laptop, and at 80 feet, I dropped down to 1mbit. I held 1mbit for a while as I walked further. I made it around 400 feet before it dropped (it was sitting next to my opened window at the time). Not the greatest, but still can be much better.

Bottom line: If you want a good wired router and dont mind poor installation, this is a nice router. While the maintainance is too simplistic for power users, its great for most people. If you want a good router for your wireless devices, look elsewhere, because sadly, the SMC lacks horribly in this area.

Makes a nice space heater!.......2004-04-15

I have now tried two SMC wireless Barricades (this unit and it's newer version, and both have "crapped out" after a few months.
Unfortunately, I also had problems with their older, wired router. Although I have ensured that there is adequate air circulation, and the ambient temperature never exceeds 70 degrees, it appears that these units are prone to overheating. (...)I found that my internet access was getting slower and slower, and my FTPs were aborting more and more frequently.

Also, be aware that if you upgrade the firmware, you WILL lose all your settings (you [cannot] read the old .bin file back in!)
[Be sure] to write down ALL your current settings [before] doing an upgrade!

It's too bad, since I have been a proponent of SMC ever since they marketed one of the first high speed UARTs many years ago!

Great value.......2004-04-13

I've had this SMC7004VWBR running for over a year on my home network. I share a DSL broadband connection with several home PC's. The Windows XP and Windows 98 PC's have worked very well connecting thru the router.

This is not a perfect product but the value and features it offers for the price is hard to beat. I am impressed with the ability to configure the firewall. I use the browser based console to disable my son's internet access by time of day. I also use the URL blocking feature to filter out domains that I don't want access to. The time-of-day feature could be beefed-up to provide more flexibility, but again, this is a feature that use to be in firewalls a few years ago that cost thousands of dollars.

Make sure you upgrade to the latest version of the firmware before you spend any time configuring the device. Generally speaking I can go months without having to reset the router. I haven't had problems with the wireless range or interference from cordless phones, but YMMV.

If I were to purchase a new wireless router I would consider the "g" version since that gives you Wifi Protected Access (WPA) as opposed to WEP (which can be hacked). If you are very concerned about security and someone stealing your bandwith or hacking onto your network, then you want a product that offers WPA. Then restrict access to the MAC address of your PC's and you'll be virtually hack-proof.

I was concerned with some of the comments, but decided to take the risk with the low price. I was able to set it up with little knowledge. It has been about a week and have had no problem. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get set up with a wireless router.
