The Kodak DC3400 was created to take the place of the DC280, one of Amazon.com's top-selling digital cameras of all time. Essentially, Kodak faithfully kept all of what made the DC280 such a great camera--2.1-megapixel images, 2x optical zoom, ease-of-use--and placed it in a new body with a more traditional shape. The DC3400 has enjoyed some great reviews from publications, which cite Kodak's trademark color saturation, the easy-to-use menu system, and its resemblance to the popular DC280.

The 2.1-megapixel CCD captures images at resolutions of 1,760 x 1,168 or 896 x 592 pixels. At both resolutions, Kodak offers three levels of JPEG compression to choose from. Files are saved to the included 8 MB CompactFlash card. The built-in flash features auto, off, fill, and red-eye reduction modes.

Kodak was aiming for the middle of the consumer market with the DC3400. Essentially a point-and-shoot camera, the DC3400 features a degree of customization not normally found in point-and-shoots. Exposure compensation (EV) can be adjusted in increments of 0.5 EV, from +2 to -2 EV. The user can select center-weighted or multipattern metering. Center-weighted metering allows the photographer to adjust for a backlit subject and helps portraits come out well. Multipattern metering takes samples from the entire frame and averages the light values. Image sharpness can be adjusted to one of three presets: Sharp, Standard, and Soft. Also, white balance can be set to auto, daylight, fluorescent, or tungsten.

The 2x zoom of the DC3400 is perhaps its weakest point, but even that can be overcome--if you don't mind the decrease in resolution required when you use the 3x digital zoom. All in all, the DC3400 is a good choice if you're looking for a point-and-shoot digital camera with good image quality, saturated color, and a certain level of customization.

Problems with this camera Kodak DC 3400.......2006-11-11

I use this camera in my line of work...so I probably take more pictures than the average person. It is a good camera...and may be the best for the hobby shooter. There are 2 flaws with this model...first one being the 'battery cover door'. They break easily...especially if you happen to put the batteries in backwards and try to force the door close as my grandkids attempted. The other problem is the 'flash'. I'm not sure if it is the flash strobe or the flash capacitor that goes bad....but either way...the flash stops working. At first it's only a missing flash here and there...then complete failure...which makes me believe it is the capacitor going bad. Other than these 2 problems....they are really tough camera and can take a lot of abuse ( drops of 3 to 4 feet )without any damage other than batteries popping out.

and its jsut take the best picture. I have used 3 more digital cameras noe. Canon, Fuji ..but this one is still the best.

i have owned this camera for about 2 years and have taken thousands of photos with it. i take pics of everything, everywhere i go. pics of my 5 year old son and pics for work (we "trim-out" custom homes). i then download the pics, edit them, make photo groupings. email them to family. print them out and use them as scrapbook pages. i even have a "custom options catalog" to show customers and every photo was taken with this camera. i use the best setting, so i dont get many photos per disk, but i get great photos. and once i edit them with printmaster they still download in email within less than a minute-and that is with my standard 56K dialup connection. i have the 8MB card that came with the camera,plus a 32MB card that i carry for backup. it is so quick and easy that sometimes i take pics, download, edit, email, format the card and start over again in well under an hour. this is a great little easy to use, easy to carry camera that is Always with me!

my first and only digital camera.......2003-06-02

...this is a great camera for the beginner, someone new to digital cameras or an "average" user of cameras in general. even for a 2.1MP camera, it takes great shots. granted, i have nothing to compare it to! uploading photos is easy on winXP, but i couldn't do it on win98; i had to buy a flash card reader.

PROS: affordable (now, anyway!), easy user interface, with a 64mb flashcard, you can take 103 high quality photos. 3X optical zoom is nice.

CONS: heavy. image viewer is kinda hard to see; images are fuzzy. 2X digital zoom is useless. sucks batteries like crazy. get rechargables.

Good Camera, But it has a few drawbacks!.......2003-01-17

I have really enjoyed my Kodak DC3400, but it does have some "issues". After about two or three months of use the battery cover broke, and it does not close totally securely. It does close, but one jolt, it pops open and out fall your batteries. I have to be especially careful to hold my hand over it while taking photos. It also makes the "battery low" icon pop up occasionally, which in the beginning cost me a lot of money in replacements. My husband did temporarily fix it, but it still isn't perfect. Anyway, that was the only physical drawback. Another issue I have is the battery life. I got smart and turned off the display while taking pictures, which significantly increases the battery life. You can easily find a model that is just as easy to operate, but has a battery charger to accompany it.

A good one-trick-pony.......2005-06-03

It does what it says it does; I've tested it with a European DVD (from Germany). It apparently has an (undocumented) PAL ~> NTSC converter, but perhaps the presence of this feature is assumed (what would be the use of a DVD player that reads a Region 2 DVD but doesn't convert it from PAL to NTSC?).

Its picture quality is close to my much more expensive Pioneer DVR-520H (multi-region playback is the one thing the DVR doesn't do), the main difference being in a particular anomaly which makes a person's face distort when the person moves; it looks as though you are watching the person's face through an opaque window (like through the opaque glass of a bath shower door); as the face moves, parts of it get bigger and then smaller as if the glass has different thicknesses throughout. This type of distortion is more pronounced on this unit but it is also noticable on my DVR.

The only differences in playback functionality, compared to my DVR, are pretty minor, such as how you go about doing frame-by-frame playback. The DVR has a separate set of buttons for this function while on this unit you must first press Pause and then FF or Rewind (big deal!). Also, the DVR has sound in its slowest FF mode while on this unit there is no sound and its slowest speed is much faster than on the DVR. Again, big deal.

On the other hand, there are also minor advantages on this unit; both units have 4 FF and Rewind speeds but unlike on the DVR, if you keep pressing FF (or Rewind) past speed #4, this unit cycles back to #1 (the DVR just stays on #4). Very minor differences both positive and negative. The only other thing worth mentioning is that this unit has fewer video setup options; it just has basic contrast, color saturation, etc.

If you're on a budget or simply need a one-trick-pony (multi-region) DVD player, this is a good choice.

Out, out brief DVD player!.......2005-03-24

I know it's not entirely fair to judge a product line according to one defective unit, but this has happened twice in the past 4 months. A Sony DVD player I bought in the same price range died after one week, and now this Pioneer gave up the ghost in less than 10 minutes. Really. It froze up the very first time I used it and would no longer read discs. The local electronics shop said it needed a new optical thingy-ma-bob which would cost more than the DVD player is worth. The moral of this tale is simple and can be applied to almost any purchase: Do not buy from the low end of the price spectrum; spend half again as much and get something of quality. If only I'd learned my lesson the first time.

Excellent sound quality for the money..........2005-01-28

I came across this DVD player while auditioning a friend's speakers. In his den, he had a one thousand dollar obscure-audiophile-brand CD player and a Sony 300CD carousel player, there was a huge improvement in sound with the audiophile CD player. In his media room he had this Pioneer and I found the sound quality to be fairly close to the audiophile CD player...we tested them side by side!

So for those of you who plan on using your DVD player that can deliver excellent musical performance, this would be a solid choice among the mass market stuff.

For movies it's no slouch either.

I had this DVD player for quite some time now and initially I was a bit suspicious because of the low price. But I'm very happy with this Pioneer DVD/CD player -- it functions perfectly and it does virtually everything I need it for. I just bought this DVD player because my $600+ Sony DVD player which was a few years old had something with the sound quality and I wanted to see if an inexpensive DVD player from a popular consumer brand like Pioneer would do the job, and I'm to say it does and it's even a lot better than my Sony which I've given to my kids for their small TVs.
As we watch DVDs several times a week and a lot on the weekends, this DVD player has proven to be a workhorse. If it would break I would definitely buy the same one right away.

Before testing the Toshiba FT8259BK, we charged it for the recommended 12 hours. A quick guide is included for convenient reference to basic phone operations. Because of its dual keypad, one on the handset and one on the base, this phone can be used at the same time on separate lines. If the handset is already in use on one line, you can make or receive calls at the base on the other line. Indicators let you know which line is in use.

The conference and intercom buttons allow you to add a third and fourth party to conversations. To add a party to a call on line one at the base, press the hold button. Press line 2 and dial the number of the person you want to include. To bring the first person back into the conversation, press the conference button. In our tests of the Toshiba FT8259BK, we were able to take the phone about 250 feet from the base before hearing static and interference. At about 700 feet, hearing our caller became difficult due to the static. We also noticed a slight background hum even at close range, but it wasn't overly distracting. Best 2 line of 3 brands tried.......2002-02-09

This was my original 2 line cordless and the only one that has held up. Because of an active family that heavily uses phones we have 3 2 line cordless phones. 2 other brands I have tried either need continuous battery replacements, drop lines when quickly switching from one line to another or just decide not to not to work with their home stations every so often. Other reviews that suggest more humming and static than other clear channel phones confuse me, I have the opposite. I have 2 P--------s and both have terrible background noise. The 3 brand I threw away after it decided to not work more often than work. The only negative about the Toshiba, it does not have an answering machine so I have to look to other brands for that feature. That's why I'm here, trying to figure out whether to try another.

This 2-line cordless 900MHZ phone is a good value. The battery life is very good (be sure to fully charge the battery before first use) and the dual keypad is very handy. Biggest cons: no headset jack and it's too easy to disconnect the phone when it's craddled between head and shoulder.

Nice phone, good feel and clear reception. Now its in the cupboard not being used because the battery life is useless. Planning to buy new battery but based on these other reviews I dont hold much hope. I also have a 2 line panasonic, never a problem with that phone.

I've never had any kind of trouble with this phone. Reception is great, and the battery really lasts a LONG time. I've often left it off the charger for a day and a half with probably two hours of talk time in there, and it has been fine. You can slip it in your pocket, too, if you are so inclined (and you have big pockets). All-around, a good phone.

We bought this phone about a year ago and have been tickled pink with it. The touch pad is a good size and the one line/two line feature is easy to use.

I haven't had any trouble with the batteries. And we use this phone constantly. Once charged, the battery lasts a good 2 hours+, maybe more.

The reception has always been good - even out into the back yard (though our back yard isn't very big...).

The two line feature is what I love the most. We have several two line phones and two portable phones, but this is the favorite phone in the house.

The speaker phone fuction (and intercom) on the base is also very useful.

Sorry to disagree with the other posts, but I've got nothing but praise for this model.
