Amazon.com Product Description
The small, light Minolta Maxxum 35mm AF SLR is easy to pack, carry, and handle on all your adventures. The Maxxum 5 also houses a powerful array of high-performance features that will satisfy both beginner photographers and serious photo hobbyists.
The Maxxum 5's high-response autofocus system makes sure your once-in-a-lifetime moments will be razor sharp. This new-generation Maxxum features an improved high-power AF drive motor and high-speed microcomputer for quicker and more precise AF control. It tracks even fast action and random movements effortlessly, right up to the moment the shutter is released.
The Maxxum 5 uses Minolta's new seven-point AF system. The focus sensors are laid out in a wide area to the "rule of thirds," so you have the creative flexibility of positioning your subject anywhere within the focus frame. The center crosshair sensor keeps the focus sharp regardless of vertical or horizontal subject contrast. For maximum autofocus control, the Maxxum 5 has three AF modes: single-shot, continuous-predictive, and automatic.
The Maxxum 5 is designed around speed, precision, and power. It features a top shutter speed of 1/4,000 second, which can stop fast action or let you take beautiful portraits using large apertures under strong light. For capturing action as it unfolds, the Maxxum 5 can be set for continuous film advance. The film advances at three frames per second as long as you hold down the shutter-release button.
The Maxxum 5's state-of-the-art metering system delivers accurate exposures under a diverse range of lighting and subject conditions. It measures light levels from 13 segments in a honeycomb pattern across the viewfinder frame, plus the background area. And much like the method used by professional photographers, this intelligent metering system emphasizes the meter segments surrounding the focus sensor in use.
The built-in flash covers lenses as wide as 28mm, and puts creative flash control at your fingertips with auto, off, fill-flash, red-eye reduction, and wireless remote flash control modes. For greater flash output and versatility, high-powered Maxxum flash units are available as optional accessories. The Maxxum 5 also features a maximum flash sync speed of 1/125 second.

Nice Camera with some drawbacks.......2007-05-26
Initially, I purchased a Minolta Maxxum 4, but was sent the Maxxum 5 instead. No problem, as I figured they were basically the same camera. As has been mentioned, the camera is feather light, which in my opinion, isn't necessarily a plus. I have never cared for the feel of a point and shoot, and this camera reminds me of that. Even though, it's heavy on the functions, and has all the neat stuff a high priced camera has. But, it has some drawbacks. Nearly all of my pictures taken in the auto mode with flash have been overexposed. Every now and then I'll get a nicely exposed photo, but it's been rare. Also, I've had trouble with the power on this camera. Not sure what happened, but I couldn't get the camera to come on. I replaced the batteries (twice), and still no power. And then, as if by a miracle, the power came on and I haven't had any trouble since. Now, wouldn't that be a pain if one were in a situation whereby you were taking memories that were priceless?? Another thing: My camera came with a CD that has the manual on it. I don't care for that in that I've had to print it out and try to make it compact enough to carry with me on shoots.
If I had it to do over, I'm not sure this would be the camera I'd choose. Problem is, I like the functions, and they're relatively easy to learn. Picture quality (so far) hasn't been what I'd expect; not anything near my Minolta Maxxum 7000 that I've had for 15 years.
backup camera for a pro photographer.......2004-12-11
the minolta maxxum 5 is my back up camera for my outher cameras.
this camera is very light it is the 2nd lighest camera on the market. the minolta maxxum 3 is the lightest on the market.
it has most bells for it's of class and it has most of the bells that you would find on the minolta pro camera line.
here is what you get with the camera
Fastest AF in its class
Selectable, 7-point, AF system
AF modes: single-shot, continuous/predictive, and automatic
Exposure: Program AE, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, expsoure compensation
Eye-Start
Shutter: High-Speed 1/4000 Sec. and 1/125 Sec. flash sync
3 fps continuous film advance
Depth-of-field preview
Spot meter and a wireless off shoe flash system. you don't need to have a pc cable for it.
as for flash units on this camera. you can find cheap flash units at camrea stores. the reason why Minolta made the flash shoe that way because it's customers where telling them they would like to see a faster locking flash shoe on there cameras. there are no crossover flash on the market that you can use on all the cameras. when you buy a flash for a canon you can't use it on a nikon. but there is onley one flash co. out there that do make a adoptor for all the cameras on the market for there flash.
this is a very simple and easy camera to use and yet very powerfull too.
Pro photographer.......2004-02-04
This is a very good camera is you do not want to gett a cheap slr w/ every thing thing you need but if you ever think of going digatl go with canon becuse they have better bodys and lenses and both work with all the lens they have now so i would say if u r not going to go diatl get this but if you r look at a canon flim SLR
Great features, poor reliability.......2004-01-10
This camera has great features for the price, and I was extremely happy with the quality of the photos I took in the 3 days I had the camera. Then it started eating whole rolls of film. After contacting the manufacturer they would repair it and I would pay all shipping costs. I returned it to amazon instead.
Recent buyer.......2003-11-28
Photos taken from my Minolta 5, which I recently purchased, have been by and large disappointing. Whether using manual or automatic mode for focus, lighting, subject type, etc. the resulting photos do not exceed the quality one would obtain with a normal point-and-shoot camera. So far, the "extra performance" of this SLR with multiple menus has failed to materialise. I would very much like to trade it in for another brand.

don't buy if your on a budget.......2006-03-08
i bought this camera after i took a high school photo class, what a piece of junk, in the 2 years i've owned it it's been repaired 3x - once at my expense of $130.00. The only thing this camera had barely outlasted was it's warranty. if your not fanatical about record keeping it's very difficult to figure out who to call to send it back. each time it went in it was gone for about 2.5 monthes. i've owned a nikon N75 for about 6 monthes now, and i must say, i love it, hasn't failed me yet, i used to think nikon was just a name and history, but nikons reputation really means something. I'm writing this for you - i'll update this if i hit any problems with the nikon or if minolta redeems themselves.
Excellent camera.......2005-09-19
I have one of these that I use on occasion. I shoot with a Digital SLR, but I do have to tell you that this camera really surprised me. The clarity of the pictures is astounding! I got mine with the 28-100mm zoom lens and I love it. I use it to take film shots of landscapes and portraits and compare them to the digital shots I get from my Nikon D-70.
VERY light and feature-rich, perfect for advanced amateurs.......2003-03-31
This camera is really marvelous, pretty light to lug around and superb performance. The following features are the ones which makes it a great buy for the price
- Eye Start (I love it, this feature is not there in Maxxum 4)
- 9 point autofocus, focus lock
- fully automatic mode, shutter-priority/aperture-priority and fully manual modes
- red-eye reduction, in-built pop-up flash
- convenient pre-set program modes (portrait,landscape,close-up,sports and night portrait)
- upto 9 multiple exposures
the film loading mechanism is smooth and easy, though it could have done with a warning message (rather than a blinking '0') when film is not loaded properly.
Has focus indicator, locks shutter when still focussing (can happen when using zoom telephoto lenses), has exposure range warnings, shutter speed warnings (if the recommended aperture or shutter speed is outside the range of your lens), the eye-sensor could have been better, but this drawback can be overcome with the exposure preview button, all in all I'm very satisfied with this camera.
Note: don't compare it with professional grade cameras like Nikon F 100... this camera does not have a color database like the pro-grades, so your exposure might be off by 1-2 stops when shooting extremely bright/dark subjects due to 'mid-tone'ing.

Customer Reviews:
This CD Player Is Amazing.......2002-05-09
Well i just got this cd player about two weeks ago. And i could tell you only one thing, "It rules". Man i cant belive that for the price i got it, ... it would work so well with the burnt cd's. Normally you go out and pay a preaty hefty prize for some thing that gives you this much satisfaction, well it was worth it. and for a bounes it comes with that great anti-skip technology ...you could actually hear the cd play for about 10 sec., open the cd player and you still got an actuall 45 sec play back..this means you play the cd with the cover open and even change the cd while doing this withought having to stop listening to the song

Customer Reviews:
I miss you!!.......2007-09-19
I have loved this hair dryer for almost two years and left it in a hotel room a week ago. I miss it terribly and will definitely buy another one...nothing else compares!!
Light, quiet, and great for styling!.......2006-12-11
I've owned and used this hair dryer for at least 7 years with absolutely no problems. It is extremely lightweight and quiet. It has 3 combo heat/speed options that are great for styling. The low and medium settings dry without blowing your hair all over the place like most dryers. You can lock the coldshot button so you don't have to keep holding it down while you use it. I love this hair dryer, and I haven't been able to find one to match it's qualities.
Limited lifespan.......2006-07-13
Just like H. Harris, I've owned two of these (because they really are quieter than regular hair dryers) and both have failed after no more than a year or so. Given the higher cost of this model, I have no intention of purchasing another.
poor quality hair dryer.......2006-06-10
I bought this hair dryer because I was specifically looking for something quiet (started to worry about my hearing with some super loud hair dryers). I bought this hair dryer. It worked well until it got stuck on cold after a few months. Liked it enough to buy a second one. However, it, too, got stuck on cold, and the button dislodged, after 3 months. I should have learned my lesson the first time.
