I am using two of these drives on each of the Mac Core Duo laptops in my office. We've had these drives for about 5 months and they see lots of use daily. We've never had a problem with them crashing or disconnecting. They are quiet, don't run hot, and transfer video data on 800 firewire hookup fast!

Basically, with the Macs, they were plug and "play". No complaints, no issues.

How can I describe this - it has crashed and I have lost years of family videos and photos, not to mention music.

Lacie support is poor. Disk Warrior is unable to save it.

Please do not buy this product - if you do you will only suffer for it.

Compared to Similar Drives:

I've owned the drive for about 8 months, and must say that I've loved it from day one. Similar Raid drives that I've had experience with have either burned out or have noisy fans. I also use the Lacie Rugged portable drive. With my MacBook Pro, I've used both intensely with great results. I've had experience with many other Raid and portable drives.

Cooling and Noise:

Since the hard drives are mounted next to eachother by the skinny side, and not by the fat side like most Raids, they do not generate so much heat for eachother. The drive stays very cool, even after intense hours of running during massive video encoding or batch picture processing. This is also helped since the stress is spread across drives. As mentioned, most Raid's are like a 747 with noise and still stay very hot. This drive is calm, stable, and quite, no matter what you do to it.

Speed:

Even when daisy-chaining two other HD's and a scanner, this thing is still blazing. With a 100gb transfer of pictures, I clocked it at around 80-100 mb/s. When copying and pasting, it makes a light noise, rather than a loud chug chug clack clack from one side of the HD to the other.

Travel and Wear:

As a transient college student, I have traveled many time with this drive with no problems. Its been subjected to cheep air conditioners and heaters, along with very humid dorm rooms. No problems, always ran without a hitch. Even though the drive is thin, it still stays very stable with its heavy metal stand.

Quality:

This thing is a beauty and looks its price. The case and vertical stand are made of solid metal, and you can feel its weight and quality. Its connections are tight and well located. The cooling system is quiet and worked fanastically.

Other Reviews:

Unfortunately with high-end HD's, who are mostly bought by busy professionals, buyers seem to only take the time to review if they've had a bad experience. Would you write your congressmen to tell him you were happy? If you look at reviews of other Raid drives, such as Western Digital, you'll see similar bad reviews, people saying they switched to Lacie. Those drives are genuinely noisy and have other concerns, however. You don't know if people are throwing things on top of them or knocking them around all of the time, or tearrying them out while there processing data. Overall, a great product.

Only pain and suffering can come of this..........2006-07-16

This is the worst hard drive I've ever had, and that's going back to 1991 when I had my first computer. I have lost my files FIVE TIMES in the past two years using this thing. Luckily I have a utility called Restorer 2000 Pro that cost me about $50 that I used to surface scan the drive and pull my data off each time, but boy does it take forever to run, and you have to have another drive just as big to dump stuff onto. As you fill the drive up it gets more and more difficult to find a place to restore.

Anyway, yeah, this drive is awful. It seems every time I really need to use it, it stops working. Please do yourself a favor, and steer far clear of this thing. There is much better stuff out there. I like one of the previous user's comments, about these things becoming nice bookends. Sounds about right to me.

Unreliable hardware - Look elsewhere.......2006-01-25

I have had this drive for just about a year and in that time, it has failed 2 times. Both times they were complete drive failures. I have checked with some friends who had simliar LaCie external devices and they reported that all had eventually failed in the short term. (Yes, I shoul have checked with them first, but I based my inital purchase on the recomendation of another friend whom I really shouldn't have.)

I have owned a number of computers and drives in my life and I have never had such a poor experience with a hardware vendor. The drive has always run extremely hot, hotter then any other external drive - and I currently have a Maxtor and an HP Personal Media drive, both 300GB, neither runs this hot. Their customer service in response to having to return these drives has been less then satisfactory.

Look towards another vendor for an external drive solution.

Warning this is a high end unit 105 watts per channel, 6.1 channel but does not have speaker switching.A/B I have an extra pair of speakers in my patio and this unit has only has 1 main front speaker unit hook. Now I have to figure out how I can use my outdoor speakers!

Also, no phono hook up.

Before you buy any home theater receiver be sure to compare the specifications and features of this Sherwood. I hve to tell you that if you were able to do side by side comparisons with the Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha, Denon and Harman Kardon as I have using the same speakers and room you would ask yourself why pay for anything else.

I was very unimpressed with this transmitter. So unimpressed in fact that I stopped using it after a couple of weeks.

The device's power is so low that it constantly suffered from interference from other signals. At its best the sound quality was poor and at worst it was swamped by the local radio stations. On top of all that the battery only lasted about 3 or 4 hours. If you have to have one of these make sure you place it as close to the radio's antenna as possible. For me that meant putting it on the back seat - not very convenient!

I had almost given up on these things until I saw the one from iRiver which is truly great and well worth the money. Granted it only works in the car but that's where I use it so that's not an issue.

This item was purchased as a gift for my wife. It is easily mounted and instructions are pretty straight forward. The odometer, timer, speedo and radio work fantastic. This seems to be a well built unit and my wife enjoys it very much. Saw this item and compared it to others and am totally satisfied. The only thing that had to be done was to cut about 2" off a 1/2 rubber hose and slice it in half to to fit the anemic handle bars. The handle bar clamps were to big and did not tighten enough. The item arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Good overall, some drawbacks.......2007-05-27

I have owned this product for over 2 years now and am glad I purchased it. It helps to have music when biking long distances. My biggest concern with this product is that it chews through batteries pretty quickly. My other concern is that the radio stations come in pretty solidly in cities, but not so much when in the country. There is a switch on the bottom of the unit that does boost the signal if you're not right in a city, but it's sometimes not that strong. That said, I'm pretty satisfied with this product overall.

I have used this radio for the last 2 years, mostly in heavy salt environment
beach/marina and plenty of Florida rain... still works the same as new.
The digital tuning great, no drift. digital speedomter/odometer accepts 700
size for calibration and is remarkably accurate.
Quick release is a dream, secure but easy to release.
The sound on this unit is not very good in terms of volume.
It's very clear with new batteries but not loud enough when background noises
are present.
I am constantly adjusting the sensor/magnet alignment(a minor
inconvenience compared to usefullnes of features)
This unit could be alot louder. It could also use some upgrades like
earphone/ext.spkr. jack and ext.antenna option for remote use.
I am writing this review 2 years lateer because i'm actually purchasing another
one!

Where is the sound???.......2005-07-25

This is great product. let me start off by saying that. I love the digital tuner, the speedometer and odometer features. The backlight makes me feel as if I am riding on something more expensive at night. My gripe with the product is the sound.
Where is the sound? I gave up my Pyramid bicycle radio because I thought I was getting a "SONY" radio. Just the fact that Sony would make a bicycle radio made me buy one w/o hearing it first.
If you are in a park or a quiet surburban block, it is great. Just do not ride in traffic and expect to hear anything. My older Pyramid in my mind seemed louder. I wish Sony would have done something with the sound. I am seriously thinking it is only my radio and I am willing to listen to another one to see if it is just my particular unit. Headphonejacks would have made this better as I would mount external speakers or something. Other than the low quality sound which I am trying to adapt to, the reception is great, the odometer/speedometer feature is awesome and the backlight makes me feel as I am riding something expensive at night.
Just a hint, when you are configuring the speedometer sensor, a little RTV (Silicone) in my opinion should be used behind it to keep it from sliding out of position on the fork along with tailored tie wrap straps Song provided with the kit. (When you buy it you will understand what I mean)
Do not let the sound factor discourage you, because I have seen the bicycle stuff out there, and this is the top of the pile. It is that they all seem to sound the same. If somone else can show me a compact bicycle radio with bigger sound email me at:

A dream come true!.......2005-04-22

I've been cycling on city streets for over a decade, and I always listen to the radio, both AM and FM. Headphones are a bit dangerous when you need to listen carefully for cars or sirens, so I looked far and wide for a radio such as this one. I have been using this radio for about five months now, and it is amazing! The radio reception is better than my sony s2 walkman, the speakers are loud enough so that I can hear the radio in the middle of urban noises and traffic, and the cycle computer is great. I had mine installed at a bike shop, and the gentleman there had no problem with the length of the cable. I'm 5' 10" riding a hybrid bike, so I'm assuming there's enough cable for your average rider.

The cycle computer is very easy to use, it has a wonderful variety of displays, and it's easy to reset. The radio is easy to tune while riding, and wow! the battery life is outstanding. I ride about 20 miles a week, playing the radio the entire time, and after 5 months, the battery still works great.

Anyone looking for a bike radio - this is far and away the best you will find, and one of the few with digital tuning.

If I loose my baby weight by the summer, I'm giving credit to this radio!
