Not worth the hype.......2007-09-12
I don't know what all the hype is about. I read all the reviews on here and thought that the pricey-ness for what it is, would be worth it. But I was wrong! First, the camera itself feels like a cheap disposable. Still, I gave it a chance and was genuinely excited to try this camera when out I first received it in the mail. I took photos everywhere -- indoors, outdoors, in daylight, in the dark, with flash, without flash, everything! I took 8 rolls of film and got them developed, just waiting for work to end so I could pick up my photos. What a disappointment! First of all, the lens protrudes out the front of the camera, so some shots look like a big shadow is intruding the middle of the picture. Second, the "fish-eye" aspect of the camera isn't all that noticeable. I want more! Third, the flash makes subjects nearly unrecognizable. Fourth, things were either too dark even in the daylight, or washed out with the flash. Lastly, I only got maybe 2 or 3 "cool" photos out of the 8 rolls of film I took! Not worth it, in my opinion.

What a great special effect camera! I got some amazing shots and am so glad I bought it. The most successful shots were the really up close ones or the pics of large buildings and outdoor shots. Especially interesting were the pictures I took in San Francisco of the big beautiful victorian homes. What funky coolness. I would *highly* recommend this camera.

SEriously this is a great fun little camera to have. Its cheap, it takes great and interesting pictures and there is always a suprise when u get them developed. My only complaint is that it took me forever how to understand how to load the film. If you have never used 35mm film in an old school camera...i sugest u learn before u go and buy a bunch...i wasted a lot of money. Otherwise its a great camera

This is a good camera... the only problem is that you really can't use the flash. The lens covers the flash and the bottom corner comes out dark from lack of light. Other than that I've had a lot of fun with it and got a lot of good pictures.

I will reject cheap media... in all it's forms........2001-02-12
This drive works really well under the right conditions. It doesn't have anything near Plextor's "burn-proof" technology, though. A buffer underrun will yield you a coaster (although it's internal buffer is pretty impressive, it still goes down in flames if your system has too many programs open).
The other thing is that this drive tends to vibrate more than a Shiatsu massage chair if you try to use cheap CD-Rs. I almost returned the thing because I though something was wrong internally... until I switched media brands! It will burn ultra-cheap discs at about 4X, if you buy a half-way decent brand, it will burn flawlessly at 8X...
This isn't a bad drive, but next time... I'm going Plextor.
Excellent product that works well with Linux.......2000-08-22
I recently received this CD burner as a gift and I've been very happy with it so far. I've had no trouble with any burns I've made and the drive is _very_ fast and consistent both for burning and reading. Best of all (for me), it works very well under Linux (in fact, I haven't even used the software that came with it). I'm doubly happy with Ricoh because they also support the development of Linux drivers for their products. This is a fast, solid, reliable product.

I never had a chance to get it working since the power and EIDE connections were loose. Adding to my frustration was the inclusion of instructions that showed opposing jumper pin configurations.
Perhaps I'll revisit this review when I actually receive one that works (and hopefully with accurate instructions.)

puchased this c.d.burner a few weeks ago. it does every thing well except will not copy data c.d. to c.d. per prompts on software have not been happy with ricoh tech support as i have tried every thing they suggested and after countless hours am sending back for full refund

I cannot rave about this product enough. I had an older model CDRW drive, and it drove me crazy because it couldn't handle big WAV files--I got maybe 3 good CDs out of the stupid thing. This drive is great! The 4 MB buffer is great, and it takes less than 10 minutes to make a 74 minutes music CD. The software, CD Creator, is also great--it's painless, intuitive, and easy. I use this software and drive to put all of my vinyl LPs on CD, and it works like a charm.

Item is cool!!! small, practical and well deigned..Its like u are carrying the latest and slimest cell phone and u look around and everybody else is still with the old fashioned motorola bricks!! AND ITS A SONY!
It comes with a very useful pod for conecting ur USB unit and it works! This is my 2nd USB (first one was a LEXAR that died!) and I do not regret about my decission.

The biggest problem with this machine is that there is no keyboard and the touch screen absolutely does not work. Searching for a word using the touch screen was absolutely impossible and sometimes would take up to five minutes to find a word. It Proved to be so bad that it was utterly useless in Egypt and I had to buy a paper dictionary while there.
Another problem was that the display contrast was really light even at the highest settings was hard to see, so when i couldn't pronounce a word, the show and point method proved difficult. In addition the dictionary does not give you an English pronunciation and was utterly useless for someone who has a hard time reading arabic.- Not to mention that many translations did not include vowels.
The speaker was practically useless as well considering only about half of the words had the ability to be amplified.
This dictionary is a worthless piece of junk, and ridiculously expensive.
You are better off with a paper dictionary.

The woman that I purchased this for is from Lebanon and she informed me that the dialect of arabic that is used is very old and "formal" so it is quite difficult to use for her.
Great Dictionary Overall, Does Drain Batteries..........2006-02-16
First, I would like to say that I am one of those people who agonizes over purchasing decisions on things like this (an electronic arabic dictionary in this case) because it will inevitably be a lot of money and I'm always afraid that I won't figure out if it sucks until after the refund period has passed. Therefore I decided it was my civic duty to write a review for all of you out there who may be cautious shoppers like myself.
Overall this dictionary is very good. The Arabic-English dictionary allows you to look up words beginning in either English or Arabic and allows for reverse translation once you've found a word (since usually more than one is available) so that you can make sure that the translation is the word you want. For instance say you look up "funny," and you see two words in Arabic come up in response. You can click on one of the Arabic words and hit the reverse translation button and it will pull up the equivalent in English. While this may seem obvious or maybe frivilous for me to mention, some words such as say, "point," may have more than one meaning so it's more useful than one would think. Also, you do not have to look up words by their roots, which makes life so much easier (I'm guessing most of you Arabic students out there know what I mean). Furthermore, the hangman game is pretty amusing and the phrasebook is amazing.
Not only does the phrasebook have hundreds of phrases (more than I've been able to go through), but it also says ALL of them out loud in Arabic. This means that you can listen to it and practice it on your own, or if you're desperate you can just point to the screen to whoever you need to understand your point. The flashcard feature is also pretty sweet beacause you can make your own lists, name them (in English or in Arabic) and add a lot of cards (I think from like 30-50, but I'm not exactly sure cause I've never added that many). Although not all of the words in Arabic can be vocalized, a large percentage of them can be and it's really a)better than nothing and b) very useful because so many of them are. There is also a nifty backlight feature so you can use it regardless of the hour.
There are only two downsides that I can think of: 1) It does drain batteries a little fast, I'd say you'll probably end up needing new batteries about once every month or month and a half 2) The lack of a keyboard interface. Although the stylus is cool and everything, it's not quite as efficient as a keyboard.
I got it directly from the ECTACO website as well and got a really good deal (about $154 on sale) and it also came with a bunch of extra software which I haven't downloaded yet (despite owning it for more than two months, yes, I'm a slacker) but will probably be really cool if this dictionary is any indicator.

Finally it works.......2006-01-13
After looking for a decent electronic dictionary for English-Arabic, I found out that I have no choice but trying this one, even though I had bad experience with its English-French language teacher before (I threw it in a trash). The positives on this unit is, it works well as a dictionary, the Arabic translations for an English word is quite complete. However, most of the programs in there like grammar or hangman are meant for Arabic language user attempting to learn English. The user interface is easy to navigate (but reading the manual before clicking around will help). You can either use a pen to write a word like in Palm or use the digital keyboad on the screen. The pronunciation is clearer than expected (when used with headphones) but it's useless through the speaker of the unit which is located in the back (what's the logic behind this???). The unit is sturdy enough and the programs are reliable. The downpoints are that they use up batteries (2 AAA) quickly...Ectaco should have given a choice of rechargable battery and A/C jack but unfortunately it's not part of this unit. Also, some words in arabic cannot be pronounced by dictionary. Other than that, the world clock is not accurate. But I don't see myself using it as an organizer even if the unit has some potential.
