3 out of 5 stars Does not work w/XP sp2.......2006-08-02

I have two of these drives They are both stable and cool to the touch. They work well with USB 2.0 but do not work with firewire. Both loose connectivity after a few hours and will not come back until you cycle power on the drives. The FW800 interface is very fast when it works but I'm afraid it will damage my data. THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH XP & SERVICE PACK 2 NOT MAXTOR. A hot fix is available from Microsoft but it did not work for me. I gave it a three based soley on the Microsoft issue not the drive.

1 out of 5 stars Maxtor - Very Poor Customer Support - Warning.......2006-07-15

This is a comment about Maxtor that applies to all models of external hard drives.

About 5 years ago, I bought a Maxtor FireWire 80GB drive when it was a new and expensive item. I then bought a PC laptop that it did not work with. Customer "support" told me that it will not work with some computers. Period.

Now I discovered that I lost the (non-standard) power cord while moving. I figured that the company would charge an outrageous price for a replacement, but was shocked when they told me that they do not have a replacement. Furthermore, they were not able to provide me with a technical description of the cord so that I could try to buy it elsewhere. They were able to tell me that no current models use the same cord, however.

I bought this drive for long-term storage/backup. I paid a lot for it, and now I'm left checking eBay every week so that I can buy an entire used drive--just for the power cord. I will not buy another Maxtor product.

3 out of 5 stars Good on Mac, bad on PC.......2006-07-10

I bought this as a backup device for a Win 2000 system - Unbelievably difficult to install. I ended up formatting it as a FAT32 volume on a Mac, attaching it to the windows system, reformatting as an NTFS and then backing things up.
Things went fine for a few days until I came in this morning to the "New Hardware Wizard" (why do PCs need wizards to configure things? must be due to their inherent geekiness).
Unmounted the drive and attached to a Mac - everything is fine. Just needs to be reformatted again to be seen as a PC volume.
It's possible that my problems are related to the fact that I feel that Windows is a dismal operating system for the 21st century, given that it is inherently rooted in DOS, but this is the first drive that I've had these sorts of headaches with. We actually have a hardware/software serice contract with our vendor for our enterprise software - they seem as clueless as I am, although they are just as capable as I am of reformatting the drive.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality - Poor Return Policy.......2006-05-18

My second Maxtor One Touch II 300gb drive from just failed. The first died last October. I'm not getting a third Maxtor product.

Aside from what appears to be poor manufacturing quality, Maxtor's customer service could stand a little upgrade, too.

Here's what you have to do to get warranty service from Maxtor. You need a return merchandise authorization from Maxtor. You have to ship the drive back to Maxtor at your cost. They will then send you a replacement unit. You can get a new unit before giving up your failed drive, but you have to give them your credit card number and they will charge you if you don't ship back the defective drive within 30 days.

I'm done with Maxtor. I suggest you look elsewhere, too.

4 out of 5 stars So far so good ... I like it fine........2006-03-21

I bought this 300GB drive mainly to have a place to store my rapidly growing MP3 and recorded WAV music collection, e.g., off the 60GB hard drive of my Toshiba notebook, and secondly, as an "all purpose" backup for all the other stuff I keep on my C drive that typically gets lost whenever my notebook crashes (which has inevitably happened at least once with EVERY computer I've ever owned). For these purposes, so far, the drive has been awesome. I got a good deal on it, and so far I like it just fine.

A major purchase consideration was the fact that Maxtor is an American manufacturer (at least in name). I find myself, more and more, looking for ways to support American companies, instead of dumping ever more of my hard-earned dollars into support of the communist slave labor machine called "China." Because its people are forced by their government to work for next to nothing, China is flooding the entire world with cheap goods, which is a good thing in some respects, I suppose, but we better damn well start thinking a lot more about all the ways China is hurting us, and the whole world. But I digress.

This particular drive accommodates three different kinds of data hookups, including Firewire and USB 2.0, and its data transfer rate is FAST. With its huge 16MB cache, 7200 rpm drive speed, and my 3gHz Pentium 4 processor, I can play my MP3 files direct from the drive with no glitches or buffer underruns. That has NOT been the case with other external storage devices I've tried, like a CF card/reader plugged into the PCMCIA slot on my notebook. That's a BIG plus for me, because it means that I can completely remove all these high-memory files from my C drive, and not worry about having instant access to them, whenever I want.

The data sockets, cooling fan inlet, power switch and AC adapter socket are all located on the rear panel of the drive, e.g., on the side opposite from the one with the "one-touch" button. The drive is sleek and compact. It was simple to set up and format for Windows XP use. I don't know if this is the norm, but oddly, the drive was shipped pre-formatted for Mac (YECCCH!), and I had to reformat it for Windows XP.

The drive activity light is a cool blue color, appearing as a line across the center of the rectangular "one-touch" button on the front of the drive. It flickers right/left/right/left when the drive is active.

I haven't yet tried the "one-touch" backup function/software with this drive (the only reason I give the drive a "four-star," rather than a "five-star" rating), so I can't comment on it, but I will say this. Even the "system restore" function native to Windows XP has NEVER worked properly for me, so I never expect a damn thing with repect to any Norton, Symantec, or other third party software applications which boast any functions similar to XP's "system restore." For most of us normal PC users who run a fairly large variety of different programs and peripherals from our computers/notebooks, the entire concept is a crock. I'm no tech geek, but it seems to me that the potential conflicts inherent to Microsoft's myriad patches, fixes and drivers, in addition to all the third party patches, fixes and drivers designed to "mate" with Microsoft's Byzantine hodge-podge can and do impair ALL such "restore" functions, to the point that they cease being of any meaningful assistance.

In short, go ahead and try the automated back up/restore functions on this drive, but don't get your hopes up. The more you expect from the drive on this, the higher is the likelihood that it will ultimately fail you, with potentially disastrous consequences. I do plan to use this function on this drive, but only in a very limited capacity, like, doing an automated "one-button" backup of specific drives/folders/files that I designate. I will NOT be relying on it to perform "system restore" type functions for me, EVER.

I've read a few complaints about the drive case, but I'm not getting it. The case is a solid anodized silver aluminum enclosure, with no apparent weaknesses or "soft spots." I'm sure neither the case nor the drive inside takes shocks well, but that's no surprise, is it really? I mean, how "tough" would anyone expect such a high-precision, high-density electronic instrument to be anyway? The thing generally isn't supposed to be tossed around your room or desk. It's supposed to be placed in a fairly well-protected location, plugged in, and just left alone.

I've also read the horror stories about drive failures, and I'm just hoping that I never experience any such failures with this one. I certainly haven't yet, but I've only had the drive for about a week. I like it. It looks cool. It works. The price was right. What else do you need?

Product Description

With its ultra slim design and ease of use, the DVD P-341 is suitable for any environment.

Amazon.com Product Description

Here to unify your movie viewing and your enjoyment of your digital media is Samsung's DVD-P341, whose high-end video capabilities and multiformat flash memory ports recommend it for tech-savvy consumers. The player offers progressive-scan component-video outputs, built-in MP3 decoding for your home-brewed CD compilations, and even compatibility with JPEG image CDs and Kodak Picture CDs. Now, quite nearly regardless of media format, you can enjoy a slideshow of your digital pictures right on your television.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-P341 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The DVD-P341 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Another handy feature is the player's EZ View letterbox eliminator, which lets you enjoy full-screen pictures on 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs--even when you're watching widescreen DVDs.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty information.

2 out of 5 stars Poor remote functions.......2006-10-21

The player plays OK except it has hickups like most others and it gets stuck really easy on "bad" spots. The things that I really don't like are the remote contol has to be aimed exact at the unit and the button pressed hard to get the unit to respond. It only has one button for both skip and fast forward or reverse so you have to hold the FF down to get it to fast forward. When this works, without skipping instead, it only goes either 2x or 8x. This can get pretty maddening when trying to scan while pressing hard and aimming exact and without skipping to the next chapter and the button is so small. It would also be nice if you could adjust the centering so that subtitles were not partially off the bottom of the screen.

1 out of 5 stars Bad reception .......2007-05-03

We bought three of these and they were horrible. the ear buds hurt our ears and the reception was very bad. During the Busch race I tried to fix the cutting out problem but it seems to lie in the design of the switch on the scanner for some reason it move out of position so beyond holding pressure on the switch to keep it on there is no other way to get it to work right.

2 out of 5 stars How Did This Ever Get Approved???.......2006-04-04

Normally I review STRICTLY books...but this product annoyed me so much, I had to review it. I took this scanner to the Martinsville race this past weekend and was VERY disappointed. I was under the impression the headset was attached to the scanner, but instead you get a cheap pair of headphones that are inserted into your ears, and the earmuffs go over them to muffle the noise.

Well, throughout the race the earpieces kept falling out of my ears, and I spent pretty much all of the race trying to adjust them so I could hear. And the signal was very poor. While I picked up the local radio stations with clarity, the race stations were muffled and kept cutting out. Luckily I have an extra race headset, and am hoping that it'll work with the scanner.

Also, whenever you change the batteries, you need to re-program all the drivers back into the scanner. This REALLY made me mad seeing as how I had to change batteries in the middle of the race, then sit there and re-program in 30-something drivers while also trying to pay attention to the race that I paid to see.

Overall, I can't believe Nascar approved these scanners. They are poorly constructed, and are pretty much glorified walkmans. If I wanted a walkman, I wouldn't have paid $149 for one. Hopefully I can use it with a real headset, but we'll see. The only thing this scanner has going for it is that it looks good, but in the end, I'm just really unhappy with this product.

2 out of 5 stars good looks, little performance.......2006-03-30

I love the look of the Dale Jr. scanner and headset. I hate the scanner itself. I took the scanner to the Bristol Race last weekend. I could not pick up the local race frequency. I could only tune in to a few drivers. Most of all, general reception was horrible. This item should have never been sponsored by NASCAR or their drivers. You can get a great scanner, with great reception at radioshack for $99.99. NASCAR should have just sold the headsets, without the scanner.

          1 out of 5 stars Horrible scanner!.......2006-02-28

I had this scanner at the track this past weekend and was very disappointed!! You couldn't make out what was said by the driver/crew and I had the volume all the way up. The radio station the race was on didn't even come in clear. May be a problem with the antenna?

3 out of 5 stars Show your love.......2005-08-30

This set will show everyone at the track who you are rooting for right away. The scanner itself is pretty cool, the front shell slides down to reveal the numbers to punch in for frequencies. It is not preprogrammed. You can store frequencies (I did mine by driver number), but if you change the batteries, they have to be redone (minus one star). I have a hard time keeping the earbuds in my ear, they fall out everytime I try to put the headphones on over top (minus the second star).

          1 out of 5 stars not pleased.......2006-03-24

This was a poorly built camera system. the buttons on the case did not line up with the buttons on the camera.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I had read the other reviews first..........2006-02-11

Bought 2 of these in the airport as I left for holiday (because they had a flash which the Kodak ones did not, and advertised themselves to a greater depth). Now reading the other reviews I suspect they have a manufacturing default which renders them useless. Neither camera could advance the film properly, so that I only got 5 and 8 shots out of the two of them. It looks like you are taking the pictures as it advances the numbers on the top, but in reality you only end up shooting shot after shot over the same piece of film. My cases were water proof, but the film cartridge looks like it leaks light, as the un used film was still streaked. It's sad as we had some great shark and turtle dives. DON'T BUY THESE - get the cheaper Kodak at this end of the market!

1 out of 5 stars Good Luck finding refills for this "reusable" camera .......2006-01-19

OK pictures for snorkeling but can't find refills that fit it. once you use the last refill you bought with it its a disposable.

1 out of 5 stars Leakage of Bonica camera case.......2005-05-17

I had a very bad experience with Bonica Sea Explorer camera , but this might be common for Bonica underwater cameras that have similar housing where two halves are held together by the hinge on one side and the latch on the other. 5 days I tried to use it - each time inspecting o-ring very carefully and each time it was leaking. After I returned it to Bonica, they made a test in a pressure camera and declare that it is good up to 100 feet and to prevent leakage one should better clean the o-ring ( O, yes. I did not use a microscope for this, while on a cruise ship).

1 out of 5 stars Bloody Thing Leaked.......2005-01-30

Try a Kodak or Fuji disposable underwater camera.

I particularly like the Fuji. They don't have flashes, so everything looks blue in the pictures, but at least they don't leak.

4 out of 5 stars Great joystick, Great Price, but no Windows 2000.......2002-01-02

This is one of the best joysticks I've used, and dollar for dollar it a great deal. It a rugged, can be customized, and has just enough weight to keep it stable.

The only minus is that Saitek will not support this model under Windows 2000. It will work under W2000, but you'll need to define a custom config for it, and you will lose access to some features.

1 out of 5 stars PC only means PC only!.......2001-09-17

Ignore the MacAddict article that appears on the item description page. It is referring to the USB version of this item, which is not what Amazon is selling here. This has some sort of PC-only gameport connector.

          5 out of 5 stars very reliable.......2001-06-28

This joystick has lasted longer than any other joystick I have ever owned, which is alot.

3 out of 5 stars Nearly but not quite.......2000-05-23

If the wow factor is important to you, then this stick has it coming out of its ears. With its high tech appearance it's bound to get a few admiring glances, and its sleak matt anti-slip finish is a joy to hold. I think Saitek must also be praised for its attempts to make this stick so adaptable. The supplied key tool can be used to raise and lower the hand support for any size of hand and it can also be switched to the opposite side, as can the throttle lever, making it suitable even for left handed players. The top buttons can also be adjusted in two planes for added comfort. So where is the achilles heal? Well, for one, the point of view hat is positioned in a way that makes it very hard to use without accidentally pressing one of the three buttons in front of it (unless you happen to have an incredibly long thumb that is). Also, there are definite problems with stray signals during games causing twitches. Saitek's latest drivers claim to have cured this problem, but even with them installed there were still stability problems evident. Finally, within a day of purchase, the trigger became so tight that it was not releasing the microswitch. The addition of a little light machine oil seemed to cure this problem, but for how long remains to be seen. I dearly wanted this to be the perfect stick, but it ended up a bit of a letdown really. Fingers crossed for the next model eh!

          5 out of 5 stars great stick.......2000-03-08

i use this stick for starwars rogue squadron 3d and it works great. unbelievable control. the throttle really helps when taking tight corners.
