Minolta used state-of-the-art 3-D CAD design technology to incorporate so many great features into such an ultracompact body. They also developed special optics for this camera that use a low number of double-sided aspheric lenses able to achieve high-quality pictures while not taking up much space. A trigonal roof prism allows for a shorter viewfinder optical system, too. All in all, this is an excellent camera if you want something that fits in most pockets, yet takes high-quality photos to match those of most larger compact cameras. One last feature Minolta is proud of for its uniqueness: the film-chamber lock prevents the back of the camera from being opened when there is an active roll of film inside--the back won't open until the roll of film has been fully rewound.

Excellent compact camera.......2004-04-04

I consider myself an intermediate-level photographer. I bought this camera (3) years ago from The Wiz and have used it quite heavily in that time, taking both indoor and outdoor photos. I've also taken some nighttime photos at Christmas time with excellent results. I've been extremely happy with the image quality -- colors, clarity, vibrancy, sharpness. I've also been happy with the feel of the camera -- sturdy, doesn't feel cheap or clunky. I've taken a number of action shots with superb results except when I inadvertently move the camera. Generally I follow my subjects (children, pets, etc.) around with the camera on and the flash set properly. I keep my finger pressed lightly on the shutter button so the camera is focused on something. For me, this helps eliminates delays in autofocus and lag time between shots. I can take many shots in succession with very minimal and acceptable delay. Basically, in order to enjoy this camera, you have to have realistic expectations. For example, the flash isn't as strong as on SLR cameras, so you need to be mindful of this and use the proper film. In low light, I use 800 Kodak film. I've found this camera to be excellent for every conceivable purpose -- family portraits, close-ups, landscapes, etc. Battery life has been good for me. Each time I take in a roll to be developed, there is rarely a bad picture, and if there is, it is always my fault, not the camera's. There are (2) reasons why I'm not giving this camera (5) stars: 1) The red-eye reduction feature is inadequate. This is the one main drawback for me. I've used the standard techniques for minimizing this. When photographing adults, there's generally no problem. But pets and children can be challenging. Minolta could eliminate this problem by designing the camera with a pop-up flash similar to Nikon's. 2) In order to open the battery compartment, you need the camera cord, which has a special "key" on it to open the compartment. I don't like this since you could lose the cord or break the key.

Despite the above drawbacks, I highly recommend this camera. It has given me wonderful photographs for (3) years. It's now my back-up camera, as I've now bought one that's better at reducing red-eye. But still, it's a great camera. And if you get a photo CD, you can always try to reduce the red eye that way.

Fuzzy Pictures.......2001-04-21

I just bought this camera for a month. I took a roll (400) of pictures but it came out fuzzy. It seemed like the lens can't focus the object right. Plus, it's not as perfect as I thought before I bought it. Anyway, I like the style and the compact size of this camera. I would still recommend it as it comes with a remote control which I think it's worth for the price.

This is my second review on this camera and it's been six months already. I think the camera is getting better and better. Might be the first roll (400) I didn't use it properly, so that's why they pictures came out fuzzy. Then I started using regular 100 and 200, the pictures are very good actually. I would strongly recommend it.

Great choice.......2001-03-27

I have a Fuji Tiara APS point and shoot that I am extremely happy with. A friend of mine has a Rollei Prego 125 zoom in 35 mm that has also performed well for him. When another friend of mine was looking to replace his old camera with a compact point and shoot model, I went to a store near me that carries at least a couple of dozen different models of point and shoot cameras, to see what was available since I had purchased mine 15 months ago. This field changes so rapidly that even one year is enough to produce substantial changes in the offerings.

For example, in a recent photo book I just read (Photography for Dummies), the author mentioned the amazing fact that 15 times as many people are buying compact point-and-shoot models as are purchasing the so-called "system cameras," that is, the typical camera with interchangeable lenses offered by all the main camera makers. What this means is that the vast majority of the major maker's research budget is now going into developing small point-and-shoot cameras. And twice as many people as bought point-and-shoots purchased disposible cameras last year. Who would have thought?

This store didn't have the Fuji Tiara or the Rollei Prego, but they did have this model and also the Minolta Explorer EX, as well as many of the other top point and shoot cameras offered today, such as the Olympus Stylus Epic and Infinity models, which are also great little performers.

This camera caught my eye as it's one of the smallest cameras out there offering all these features. I usually recommend people not go over 3X in a zoom lens in a small point-and-shoot, but with this little camera, I am willing to make an exception. Although I haven't tested it myself personally, the lens is supposed excellent. It consists of 6 elements in 6 groups, including aspherical elements, and has a 900-step focusing system, all of which are supposed to create a very sharp lens.

Another useful feature is the passive rather than active focusing system. Active focusing uses infrared to focus, and this creates problems trying to snap a quick shot through a window, or the windshield of your car, because the infrared beam will bounce off the glass six inches in front of your nose, producing a blurred shot. This means you have to enable "infinity lock" before you shoot, which is an extra step that could even cause you to miss the picture. Passive focus systems are usually sensitive to vertical lines, so this isn't a problem with them. This is the only complaint I have with my Fuji Tiara model.

The new Nikon 125mm point and shoot also uses aspherical optics and is supposed to be very sharp also. If you decide not to go with the Explorer EX, you might want to check out this model.

hate this camera.......2001-01-16

I bought this camera after the Ricoh I had for 8 years broke. I have taken 5 rolls of pictures in two months and am not happy with any of them. I keep trying, but I can't seem to take a good picture. They are either dark or fuzzy. The red-eye reduction feature takes too long. By the time the camera actually takes the picture, my kids have turned away. But without the red eye reduction, everyone's eyes are big and red. I never had a problem with my Ricoh. Every picture came out perfect so I don't think it's my fault. Anyways, I'm returning this camera and searching for a new Ricoh!

great point & shoot.......2000-12-13

This camera is great - compact, lightweight, sharp-as-a-tack photos. The colors in the photos are unbelievable - bright, clean, true-to-color. I bought this for my honeymoon and professional photo lab where I took my photos to be developed couldn't believe the quality that came from this little point and shoot. The remote control is very easy to use and a great feature. The only downside to this camera is that the silver case is easily scratched, which gives it a "used" look rather quickly. However, that's a very minor problem when you're getting such amazing photos from it.

Sony MVC-FD91 Revisited.......2007-08-14

It's been along time. I bought this camera new 7 or 8 years ago and still have it and use it. At that time it was a high end camera, I believe, the retail price was around $999.00. How things have changed! Now I can only compare it to a classic old black and white movie, silly and dated, but in it's time wonderful. It does what it does well, but with only 0.8MP it can't do much. A 14x optical zoom? Unheard of now! Takeing a picture at the full telephoto setting and then passing it off as anything other then abstract art would be absurd. Still, you've got to love them for thinking it was possible. This camera is a wonderful artifact (why I gave it 4 stars) of a not so far off distant time in digital photography.

But with the new ones coming out, I felt a little outdated.
I definiteltly love the floppy disk feature of holding images. It makes life soooo much easier!
Whenever I ran outta discs, someone always had extra or I could easily buy them very cheap.

The only bad thing was the battery life was soooo short and towards the last few months Ive had nothing but disc errors and lost pics.

I finally upgraded to a new camera but I don't regret this one at all.

...this camera is great cuz the best part you take pictures are they are on floppy already so you can jus email, save or print them out instantly...no more connecting to USB port and all that hassel!...trust me its worth the price you pay! Its includes a car charger to recharge the battery if your taking a road trip...;-)...great product for college kids!!

Great camera for the 35 mm professional.......2002-09-21

I have owned this camera for over 2 years now, and absolutely love this camera. It takes great pictures. I normally use the 640x480 pixel option. I normally get about 23 pictures to the floppy on this setting. There is an exposure modifier, which will allow you to darken bright pictures, and brighten dark pictures, by modifying the apeture, and shutter speed. They are both controlled automatically, but they are adjustable up to +1.5 to -1.5. There is also auto, or manual white balance, for use in compensation for incandescent, and florescent lighting. There is a 14x optical zoom, one of the best in the industry. There is a 52mm ring, for attaching filters.

Incredible Clarity and Range.......2003-12-11

This phone is amazing! I really didn't need an answering machine, but I picked up this cordless gem for $50 (refurbished), and I'm very happy with it.

I've had the phone for a week now, and I take it with me when I'm walking the dog. The calls are clear with no breakup. I have tested this phone and have talked on it from almost a block away. I experienced problems when the microwave is on and I'm in the same room, but so what? All I had to do was move about 12 feet away to stop the static.

The only reason that I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it's a bit difficult to program the speed dial numbers - mainly because I'm trying to read the instructions while pushing the buttons - after a minute or so, if you don't get the info entered quickly enough, you have to start over again. But that's a small complaint.

I have no comments on the answering machine - I am using the phone over the Internet (Vonage) - so all my unanswered calls go to a voice mailbox.

In short, if you want a great phone and can pick this one up refurbished, I suggest doing so. Obviously, I can't comment yet on durability or long term reliabilty yet, but I felt stongly enough about my initial experience with this phone to write this review.

have had for quite some time. no problems. love the handset. you can actually feel the weight. i'm sick of these phones that the handset feels like you're using a kids toy.

Talk button keeps breaking.......2002-02-24

The phone came with a one year warrenty. At 13 months, the talk button on the handset broke. We could not make a call or answer a call using the handset. Called Uniden, but never could get through to customer service. Finally, we bought a replacement handset through Uniden... The handset had a 3 month warrenty. In the 4th month, the talk button on the new handset broke. We now have a fully functioning base unit and two handsets that don't work. This Uniden is heading toward the trash. My big question now is do I give any more of my $$ to Uniden. The reception on the unit was great. Very clear, but considering the cost of the phone, then adding [the money] for the replacement handset, I spent [a lot of money] to use a phone for 15 months !!

Not happy with this product.......2001-11-20

I purchased this phone/answering machine about 18 months ago. The sound quality is poor on the answering machine. I frequently have to replay messages to understand what the caller is saying. The number keys on the handset are placed in such a way that I often inadvertently hit them with my chin or mouth when talking on the phone. This produces that annoying beep in the ear of the person on the other end of the call. I'm also not impressed by the clarity of the sound on the phone. Recently, the number 7 button is sticking. Our area code begins with a 7, so it's been quite annoying. I called the repair area and it will cost me (dollar amount)to have it repaired. No thanks, I'll take my $(...)and buy a Sony. No more Unidens for me. To get one final complaint in on this product, the customer service reps were not very knowledgeable and not very friendly.
