Great speed at a limited range........2002-12-03

This system was EASY to install. You plug it into your computer, insert the cd-rom, and it will pretty much install itself in a couple of minutes. This installation is almost as easy as the access point where you plug it in and it broadcasts. It's speed level is fantastic. However, I found that its range was not nearly as good as with my SMC 802.11b system.

I am still glad I bought this product, but it is shocking to me that the system doesn't always get good reception from but one room away (It works, but not always particularly well).

I should mention how the system works speedwise. It's speeds are significantly higher than the 802.11b, but there is more of a lag. So, you might go to a website, get a slight lag where nothing shows up on the page, and then boom... it all appears instantaneously. I am sure that some of this delay is because I've created another point for data to go through - I am using this system through my SMC barricade.

Besides the limited range, there is one other annoying feature of the product - it lights. They blink and flash in a way that I find rather annoying, although one does get used to it for a while.

So, should you buy and use this? Yes and no, depending upon your set-up.

NO: If you live in a big home where you don't have to worry about outside disturbances (ie multiple microwave ovens and 2.4 gig phones.) In this situation go with 802.11b for the greater range at a lower price.

YES: If you need to move massive amounts of data though your network. 802.11a is MUCH faster when it works, and you do notice the difference with larger files.

YES: If you live in a high density area such as a condominium were you have to worry about interference from your neighbors. This netgear system will bypass most interference since it operates at a higher frequency, and the lessend range actually becomes an advantage since it means you are less likely to get interference from other 802.11a systems as well.

constant dropped signal and system crash.......2002-10-23

I used 802.11b wireless for 3 years and was very happy with it until I started using software that requires transferring of large files. I even mixed routers and pc cards from different companies, and everything integrated well. I jumped into 802.11a wireless when it first came out thinking that it'll be just as easy to install. 4 out of 4 laptops that I had crashed and locked within 5 minutes as soon as pc cards come close to the router (even with non turbo mode). After changing the router, it seemed to work ok for few days. Now, my Sony picturebook still crashes so I can't use pc card at all, signal kept getting dropped every 30 minutes or so on my other laptops, and sometimes it locks everything and crashes my server. After 2 months of wasted effort, I am very disappointed, and I am going back to wired networking (802.11b is too slow and 802.11a is too unreliable.

Mirror review of the HE102.......2002-10-13

I purchased the Netgear HE102 along with the HA501 cardbus card, after I had to return the Linksys WAP54A and WPC54A. There were many reasons why I had to return the Linksys. See my review of the WPC54A elsewhere on Amazon. At first, I was a little apprehensive about the Netgear after the Linksys saga. To my pleasant surprise, the Netgear's setup was a breeze. Every feature worked as advertised, including 152 bit WEP and Turbo Mode. I was able to set up the wireless LAN in less than 10 minutes. Actually, the thing practically worked right out of the box. And this is with Windows XP. Now that I have been using the network for a little while, I do have one minor complaint. There were a number of times when my connection was dropped. Although the WAP and the laptop were on different floors, the straight linear distance between the two is only about 50 feet. And I really don't expect the connection to drop in such short distance. Miraculously, the connection was okay in other parts of the house. So, you really need to play with the location, orientation, antennas, and channel selection of the WAP to achieve an optimal/compromised result. Since there is no guidance in how to do this, you have to experiment. It may take you a long time to find the right combination. After a couple of days of experimentation, I now settled on the one combination that gives me no dead spot in the entire house, but I have to give up on bandwidth. I don't get the full 72 Mbps unless the laptop is in the same room as the WAP. Everywhere else, 48 Mbps is the best that I can do, and it deteriorates very fast from there. From a different floor, I mostly get about 12 Mbps. This is a good compromise that is also acceptable for my purpose. Your mileage may vary.

Another Stunner from Netgear.......2002-10-02

I am afraid that I am becoming somewhat of biased Netgear user. Having had nothing but unfettered success with their products, my selections are pretty much automatic. The card arrived and was plugged into my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop. The installation was painless and in less than 5 minutes I was surfing the net over the wireless network. Granted, I have paired this with Netgear's HE-102 which probably contributes to the quality perfomance.

As I write this I am approximately 25m away from the WAP with about 1.5 walls and 1 floor. This gives me a 74% signal and a 24-48MBps transfer rate and a 36-54 MBps receive rate. The lowest rate I have seen in the house is 18 MBps which is still far better than 802.11b.

If you are on the fence, jump off on the side of 802.11a with Netgear's products. You won't be disappointed.

Works right out of the box.......2002-08-31

Bought both the HA501 802.11a PC Card and HE102 802.11a wireless access point. Installed and ran out of the box. Driver installation is a snap. Setup is a snap with Windows/XP. No reboot necessary. Changing wireless network SSID and setting WEP encryption is easy as well. I ran in turbo mode 72Mbps inside my house and connect to the cable modem for internet access. Very fast and good range too.
Monitoring the stations connecting and changing TCP/IP config via the AP web interface is very easy too.

Sigma SA-7 SLR camera with Sigma 28-200mm lens.......2002-10-14

An excellent combination, the Sigma SA-7 and the Sigma 28-200mm zoom lens. This is a well built camera expecially considering the price range. I've used Canon, Pentax and Fuji SLR 35mm cameras and the lower priced Sigma SA-7 gives just as good results and saves you money for an extra lens etc. Metering system performs as good as the name brands (actually Sigma is a well known lens manufacturer, just not known for their cameras since they are fairly new in that field). Auto Focusing slightly slower than some others but as accurate and is not a problem for me. Well made and completely "FUN" camera and lens. And it actually has some features found only on more expensive cameras. You'll fall in love with it right off and save a lot of money in the process. What more could you want!!!

A nice camera with a great lens........2002-08-01

I have shot several rolls of "test film" with this camera and I am very pleased with the results. I used to use a basic manual 35mm slr for several years, then went to point and shoots for awhile and finally decided it was time to get a "real" camera. I spent many weeks researching the different brands and models on the manufacturers web sites, photo magazine articles and photo shops. I chose the Sigma SA7 because I want to explore photography more and wanted a camera that is a little more sophisticated than some of the other "entry level" 35 slr's but without being intimidating, the SA7 is just that. It feels comfortable in the hand, it's easy to use and it gives you lots of options in your photo taking. It has excellent build quality (100% Made in Japan, camera and lens, an added value at this price level)and comes with a great compact hyperzoom macro 28-200mm lens. I chose this lens because I did not want to carry around several lenses and I was impressed with it's aspherical design (smaller and lighter than other 28-200 lenses, with no focal loss or distortion) and since most of my shooting will be of my children, family, sports, nature etc., I felt this lens would probably cover about 85-90% of my photo taking. The kit includes: camera, lens with dust cap, strap, batteries, lens hood and carry bag (some of these items cost extra with other brands). The instruction manual is well written. The autofocus is sometimes a bit slow to "lock on" but I think that is due to it's sensitve nature (I'm used to manual focus)and you learn to compensate for that. I did purchase the Tiffin 62mm filter kit with this camera (uv, polarizing,inside lighting filter)and have gotten great results. I would like to see Sigma offer a battery pack for the SA7. If you want a well made, easy to use camera that you can grow with the Sigma SA7 is it.
