1 out of 5 stars Could not use...not compatible with my wireless carrier.......2007-09-21

Hello, I am not happy at all with this product, with Amazon, or the seller. As I purchased this item to setup my wireless internet at home. It sat in the box for 40 days as it took that long for my wireless company to get my satelite to me and setup. Then on the day to set it up I'm told by the Tech that this item is not compatible and I could not use it. When I asked the seller to refund my monie - they indicated it was over 30 days and they could not, nor would Amazon help me....so I am very unhappy as I am a long time customer that has spent my fair share of monies on Amazon and the first time I need help everyone jumps ship...so I rate this over all experience very poor, with poor customer service....and just over all BAD. Thanks but no thanks.

5 out of 5 stars FVG318 Prosafe Wireless router w/8 port switch.......2007-06-13

Bought this to add to my wireless-wired home network. I have used a Netgear FWAG114 along with a Netgear WG302 access point, and several D-Link gaming adapters to connect 7 computers running a variety of systems along with a Slingbox and 2 laptops. Sytems include Vista, XP Pro, Win2000, Win2000 Server and Suse 10.2 (linux). I like the Netgear Pro series as they seem to be more robust and are fairly easy to configure and handle security really well.

Connected the FVW318, logged in and set up the WPA security, set my rules for VNC (Windows and one for Linux), HTML, FTP, Slingbox and opened the ports. Set security for the highest level of WPA I could. I can have as many as 15 different wireless systems in my neighborhood broadcasting at any given moment so security and ability to connect to my wireless is very important to me.

I replaced the FWAG114 with the FVG318 and after configuring it, it connected immediately. My WG302 is on the lower floor and is connect by POE. Once I booted both up the connection has been flawless for the last 48 hours. I am on Comcast and my connection is at a blazing 19,880 kbs (2485 KB/sec) down and 2485 kbs (196.9 KB/sec) up.

I have read many reviews that rate this router as bad. User became easily frustrated with all the dropped connections and poor performance. But I have found that configuring it right the first time is the most important step in getting it to work.

Configuration was easy and straight forward. Of, course, you must know how to configure your rules and set the ports. Some probably buy this router thinking it is plug and play and it is not. First thing I did was download the current firmware from Netgear and install it before doing anything. Bugs are generally eliminated with upgrades.

I must be lucky with my Netgear products. I started years ago with the Netgear RT314 router and now use Netgear exclusively. I have family that come to visit in their motor homes and I assign them logons and they can connect wirelessly from around 75 feet away.

I give this router 5 stars as it has performed flawlessly so far. I run Rosetta@Home (shared computing helping to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases) on all of my computers and a good connection 24/7 is of most importance to me, plus, I love wireless computing.

If you buy the FVG318 read the manual that is on the CD thoroughly before you start the configuration. I will post a follow up review after a month or so to let you know if I still really like my FVG318.

5 out of 5 stars Just Works!.......2007-06-07

We used several of these to wire up Cisco IP phones in our office with zero problems. The builtin encryption (note, you'll need a Windows PC to set the password though any IP device will work after that) means we are happy using the devices on the shared wiring in our office building.

They worked so well I'm buying more for home! Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars DNS problem like everyone else.......2004-11-12

I bought mine exactly 1 year ago, and I have the same DNS complaints as everyone else. And it seemed to have cropped up after upgrading FIRMware to 1.5 from 1.2 or 1.3 half a year ago. If I am downloading or sharing something large at my max ADSL downspeed/upload, 96/640kbps, DNS failures are very common. And I frequently download from newsgroups, so this is a real issue. I imagine users realtime videa and audio will have the same problem.

It is easy to setup and use, and seems to work fine as a LAN router and print server, though I haven't used it much as one. It works fine if I am not maxing my net connection.

From the other reports of terrible customer service, I advise anyone to avoid this company if you have a similiarly priced alternative.

It is still much than using PPPoeT dialer software that the telco gives you to access DSL without a ADSL router.

2 out of 5 stars If this router stops working for you ..........2004-09-22

Several reviewers have posted and said that after a certain period of time, the router starts dropping their Internet connection randomly. I too have had the same thing happen, but have traced it to a DNS problem, not a connection issue. What this means is that the router (for whatever reason) loses its ability to translate numeric Innternet IP addresses (such as 216.109.117.10) to names (www.yahoo.com). So, if your Internet connection appears to have died, bring up a command prompt and try pinging 216.109.117.106 (or any other IP address). If that works, then you have a DNS problem.
To resolve this issue, contact your ISP and find out what their DNS server IP addresses are, and then plug that information into the router's configuration or into the TCP/IP network settings for each machine connected to the Internet.
I don't know why this problem occurs, but once I manually entered the DNS settings, everything worked fine. I have had no other issues with this router, other than the network connections being in the front of the device instead of the back (as others have commented on already).
If you are reading this review trying to decide whether to get this router, I wold advise against buying anything from Netgear or Linksys. If you read the reviews for pretty much any Netgear or Linksys router on this site, you will see that most of them get horrible reviews for reliability issues. Plus, many have stated that Netgear customer support is horrible, and I can attest to that. I sent them an email once and it took weeks before they responded back.
You may want to consider something like the Zyxel Prestige 324 instead. It may cost a little more, but word on the street is that its a better product, and more secure also. I plan on buying one to replace my Netgear PR114.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible router.......2004-05-25

I have similar problems as described by someone here. I have to disconnect the router often to get on the internet. It would stop working suddenly. Also Netgears' customer service is pathetic. I have been using this router for 2 years now.

1 out of 5 stars It's Horrible.......2003-11-14

I don't know how to begin... This router randomly decides sometimes that it doesn't want to work. The internet will stop working. Completely. When I unplug my computer and try plugging in directly to the DSL modem, everything works fine. For some reason, this router messes with me every single day, and I'm on amazon now looking to buy a new one.

'Nuff Said.

5 out of 5 stars Very easy setup.......2002-11-27

I used this router to connect 3 computers to the internet, one computer running XP, one NT and another one Win95. Since my cable company, Comcast, does not require username or password, setup was basically 'plug-and-play', 15 minutes max (mostly becaues of rebooting all the computers throughout the house).

        1 out of 5 stars Terrible firmware.......2007-09-19

I've had this thing about 6 months now and it has been nothing but trouble. The MIMO radio is acceptible, but almost useless now that the thing is crashing every 5 minutes. I used to have a static IP connection that would only require me to reset about once a week (no reboot button or off switch, only a factory reset button), but since moving to a dynamic ppoe login, I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes before having to unplug and plug it back in. I'm switching back to my linksys 10mb 802.11b router until I can find something new.

And by the way, It's a refurb that was $55-shipped!

I have been searching for agood router for over 2 months, I had very different reviews on many routers, some say linksys is better, some say netgear is better ,some say d- link is better.
so what I did , I bought all of them and I install them one by one in my house. they were all easy to install , easy to navigate but for the best speed and the best range . I used the same computers with all of them.the linksys and the d -link didn't have agood rang up stairs for my laptop or through out the whole house. but this route wnr83m is the winner . so I choose it and I returned the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Very reliable, solid router/firewall.......2006-02-07

Review by Auri Rahimzadeh, Author, Hacking the PSP, www.hackingpsp.com

I've been using an FVS318v1 for three years now. The system just keeps working. I bought a second as a spare, just in case, and have never needed it. While the VPN capabilities are a little outdated.

I haven't noticed any performance issues with the router. It comes with a 10/100 switch of decent quality, although nothing on the order of a "top-shelf" Cisco router. The interface is clean and easy to use, without many of the fancier bells and whistles available even on lower cost units.

So why do I use it? One word: Reliability. Unlike less-expensive routers, especially compared to the solutions from Linksys, the FVS318 just keeps running and performing to expectation. Really, that's all you can ask of a router/firewall solution. Other consumer/home-office routers I've owned have died within six months of install, especially Linksys products (even moreso after their Cisco purchase, which doesn't make much sense to me). Netgear's newest VPN solutions haven't fared well in my tests - their VPN Firewall 25 failed within two days of purchase, and their gigabit switch failed on me within a week.

It's a disturbing trend in the industry that products appear to be built to last for only a short time, only to be replaced by yet another, likely unreliable model. At least Netgear's prior generation of products continues to be reliable, and affordable at the same time.

Pros: Steadfast reliability. Easy to use interface.

Cons: Some useful features missing, like SNMP and traffic meter capability. No VPN client included ($40 from Netgear, but the software conflicts with Cisco's VPN client).

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful there is a newer model v3 with better cpu!.......2005-05-17

Be careful! Netgear is not telling people that there are 3 versions of the FVS318 (v1, v2 and v3)! Version 3 has a better CPU and uses a different firmware (v3.0). I feel cheated! Because Netgear sells all the older FVS318 as though they are all the same! Not the newest v3 model! What a low life company somebody should sue them. If the Netgear FVS318 has a new cpu then give it a new model number! But they don't, so most of us are buying earlier out-of-date models! Those of us who thought we were buying the latest model were being scammed and defrauded! Shame on Netgear!

3 out of 5 stars Good for home use but not for a small business connection.......2006-04-26

Not a bad router but make sure you get patched from the vendors website beware though, when it drops dsl connections it needs to power cycled to get the connection going again.

          Product Description

The 8-port Barricade is an ideal all-in-one networking solution for home and small business users. This platform independent multi-functional broadband router combines a 8-port 10/100 Mbps dual-speed switch, a built-in print server, an RS 232 Console port for fail-over dial-up or modem connections, and an Internet firewall for security against hackers and other unauthorized users. The Barricade provides a WAN port as well as Network Address Translation (NAT), which extend simultaneous Internet access up to 253 PCs on the LAN. The Barricade fully supports VPN tunneling via PPTP/IPSec pass-through allowing remote users secure access to their corporate infrastructure. This broadband router also allows the connection of multiple users to the Internet using a single WAN/IP address. LAN and IP addresses are auto-assigned and easily managed, and the IP routing supports a range of popular applications.

5 out of 5 stars Reliable networking for the Small LAN.......2005-11-03

I rarely write reviews, but this router has proved so reliable over the past four months that I wanted to actively endorse it. It was easy to install and has not required resetting or any other adjustment since installation. I have used other routers from Linksys and Dlink with mixed to bad results so I was most pleased to finally have a router that quietly did its job with no issues of peformance degradation. I use it for three windows XP and an HP printer.

5 out of 5 stars SMC7008ABR Barricade Very Easy To Use.......2005-09-21

I have very limited knowledge of running a Home LAN so I needed a router that would be easy to set up, maintain, and more importantly provide protection.

This router fits that description;I had it up and running in about 30 minutes. The browser based router setup interface is a breeze to use.

I checked my security settings through the Shields Up website and passed all port security checks.

I am also able to connect my Xbox to Xbox Live without any special router configuration.

Rock solid. I highly recommend this NAT router.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and reliable unit.......2005-07-05

I have used this unit and its smaller brother (SMC7004ABR) for a few years now.

It has been 99.998% reliable in that time. (I reset the unit only four times in 3 years.) It also has an excellent failover capability, so you can use dial-up, ISDN or even a cell phone as a back up for your standard internet connection.

The default security settings are incorrect, and you must disable remote administration and add a password to the unit. I don't rate against the SMC as other reviewers have because most other vendors have the same default settings. (Linksys for example has remote administration on by default, and uses a well known default password for all its routers.

Despite what another reviewer posted the print server is configurable over the web interface, and you do not need any configuration wizard at all. As a result the printer can be used as a standard UNIX queue with all operating systems, including Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris, BSD and of course Windows. I used mine in just this way for years.

As a result of its reliability, and its excellent failover capability I rate this unit at 4 stars. To move up a star it would need better security defaults and additional interface polish. (5 stars is PERFECT in my book)

1 out of 5 stars It is *NOT* platform independent!!.......2004-02-20

          .
Although SMC deceptively states that this product is "platform independent" you will not find any Macintosh software to configure the print server.

BOTTOM LINE ... Unless you play on a PC the integrated print server will be useless - a real waste of your hard earned money.

5 out of 5 stars Once again SMC does it right.......2004-02-16

This is simply a great product for the price. As a network engineer I am particular about what devices I use to protect my home network and I like the Barricade for several reasons:

          1. Ease of setup. Setup on this router is a no-brainer.
          2. Reliability. I have not had to reboot it or had it lock up in the 3 months it has been protecting my home network.
          3. Features. The Barricade has features that you would expect in a much more expensive solution.

I would recommend this device to anyone.
