With the D70s, high-speed action photography is truly a reality. With the ability to shoot a rapid three frames per second (fps) for a continuous burst of 144 pictures, you'll never miss any action. And with shutter speeds that range from 30 seconds to 1/8000 second, or up to a 1/500-second flash synch speed, you'll be sure to have the flexibility you need to capture the action precisely as you want it.
Best of all, the D70s employs the Nikon F lens mount for seamless compatibility with the comprehensive lineup of high-quality AF and AF-S Nikkor lenses that have long been favored by professionals around the world. Included with the D70s is the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF -- a compact standard zoom lens that covers the focal length range of 18 to 70 millimeters, which is equivalent to 27 to 105 millimeters in 35mm format.
Professional Quality with Point-and-Shoot Simplicity
While the D70s offers many features you'd only expect in a professional-level SLR, the camera also supports many features that make picture-taking a breeze for anyone. The D70s features Digital Vari-Program selections that automatically optimize white balance, sharpening, tone (contrast), color, saturation and hue settings to best match the selected scene. Instead of having to worry about all the camera settings, you can have the option of choosing from one of several "modes" -- such as Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close Up, Sports, Night Landscape, or Night Portrait -- that will deliver the optimum image for you according to the conditions. This means you can concentrate on capturing that special moment while leaving the details to the camera. And once you've taken your shots, Nikon's PictureProject user interface makes image management, editing and sharing easy and fun. Simply connect the camera to a computer to automatically import pictures. You can also quickly e-mail or auto enhance images, run slide shows, burn CD/DVDs, and access other commonly used functions easily and intuitively. With simple drag-and-drop steps, you can organize pictures into separate collections and quickly locate any file by name, keyword, or date.
Among the many other features that make the D70s an ideal digital SLR solution are:
- Nikon-exclusive Silent Wave Motor for high-speed auto-focusing with accuracy and super-quiet operation
- Internal Focusing (IF) for smoother operation and great balance
- Three Nikon ED glass elements, plus aspherical element for low distortion and minimized chromatic aberration
- M/A mode for instant switching from auto-focus to manual Nikon D-Signal technology for enhanced flash and ambient exposure control
The camera's included EN-EL3a rechargeable lithium-ion offers up to 2,500 shots per charge, and the large, two-inch TFT LCD monitor offers several playback options, including single frame, four or nine-image thumbnail display, zoom with scroll (up to 4.7x), automatic slide show, histogram indication and highlight point display. In short, the Nikon D70s delivers the professional-level quality an SLR of this class but with many of the convenient automated features that can make photography so fun.
What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:
35mm Film to Digital to Digital SLR.......2007-07-19
Great product, you do not need 10 mp, 6 mega pixel is not a problem especially if you shoot raw or fine, go all out and get both lenses and buy two high speed turbo memory cards so you can take consecutive pictures fast. Also buy the Hood man to protect the viewer, buy a Tamrac shock bag. The Lithium battery is great you can take 500 pictures with no charge on a 10 day vacation. Remember the most important thing with a digital camera is to save and BACKUP your photos so buy an external USB hard drive and duplicate all your saved shots. Buy a tripod, buy the remote and buy the DVD lessons.
I have had mine for a year, I am so happy! The D80 and D200 have nothing over the D70S and don't settle for the D40.
Don't let age and megapixels fool you.......2007-07-02
I picked up a refurbished version of this classic recently (06/07), and to be honest, there is nothing else that even comes near its performance for the price. Yes the heart of this camera is 2004 technology, and yes it is only 6 megapixels, but let's be honest, 6 megapixels is more than enough and great 2004 technology beats mediocre tech from any era.
I was a Canon admirer, and I even owned a Rebel Ti setup (a film SLR), but when I could finally afford to take the DSLR plunge, I couldn't help but admire the virtuosity of Nikon's white balance and metering. Even humble the D40 blew away anything Canon had for less than the price of a used car. What makes the D70 (and D70s) even more remarkable is that they both have the same tech as high end Nikons (ie D200, D2X series): 1/500 flash synch, 1/8000 max shutter, and 1004 point matrix metering (plus it hasn't been dumbed down like the D40, D40x, and D80 sadly have). It also supports all of Nikon's modern lenses with AF on any that offer it (unlike the otherwise stellar D40 and D40x which require AFS). Additionally, unlike the D100 and other previous Nikon DSLRs, the D70(s) models both support I-TTL, Nikon's most advanced lighting system. Additionally the D70(s) can serve as a master in wireless flash situations.
The camera, like almost all of Nikons, is built incredibly well, more tank than toy (I wish I could say the same for the Rebels), and it exudes confidence. It also features a solid grip that suits my oversized hands, but I firmly believe it could accommodate more modest sized hands just as well. Confidence is further enhanced by an uncanny responsiveness, incredible burst mode, and lightning quick focus (on my 18-135mm AF-S lens). You really feel like a pro, even if you are just taking pictures of your cat.
Compared to the D70, the D70s adds a better AF system (which can be added to the D70 with a firmware upgrade), wider flash coverage, faster transfer of pcis from the burst cache to the memory card, and a larger screen. It likely also has a bunch of subtle refinements throughout, but nothing else of note. The 18-70mm lens offered as part of a kit is excellent, though Nikon has a huge assortment of lenses to choose from.
Don't underestimate 6 megapixels.......2007-06-27
I've been using this camera for a year, and continues to surprise. I recommend Ken Rockwell's WEB page on this camera to optimize settings; example color saturation setting. I recently viewed a tv program of a professional outdoor cameraman, looking carefully for the camera he used. It was a Nikon D1x, sporting 5.5 megapixels. Though not to confuse the D70s with the D1x, it does imply something about the megapixel hyperbole. I personally like RAW (some don't), and with Capture NX, is a great complement to the D70s. The manual mode (for me) is sometimes frustrating using the kit lens in getting the focus perfect; am considering a viewfinder adaptor to improve this aspect.
GET THIS, FORGET THE D80 OR D40.......2007-03-27
I'VE HAD THIS CAMERA FOR 15 MONTHS NOW AND I HAVE NOT REGRETTED ONE SECOND WITH IT. I AM A WEEKEND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER AND PORTRAIT & LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER DURING THE WEEK, AND THE PICTURES AND COLOR RENDITION FROM THIS CAMERA ARE SECOND TO ONE. THE D200. THE D70S HAS A MUCH BETTER METERING SYSTEM THAN THE D80 OR D40. MY PARTNER SHOT THE D80 FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND AFTER EXTENSIVE PHOTOSHOP WORK FOR THE COLOR ISSUES HE TRADED DOWN FOR A D70S. AND JUST TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE D200, THE ONLY ADVANTAGE WITH THAT IS THE WHITE BALANCE. THE AUTO SETTING ON THE WHITE BALANCE D200 IS MUCH MORE ACCURATE THAN THE D70S' BUT I SHOOT IN RAW NEF SO FOR ME THATS NOT A PROBLEM. NOR SHOULD IT BE FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHY ENTHUSIAST BECAUSE THEY CAN MANUALLY SET IT ON THE D70S. FIVE STARS FROM ME. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER CAMERA UNTIL THE TRUE FULL FRAME NIKON COMES OUT...WHENEVER THAT IS.
proven performer.......2007-03-14
a lot of photojournalists have this, and its easy to see why: fast shutter speed and af, good ergonomics, many lens options, nikon quality. at 6 mp, d70 proves megapixels arent the be-all and end all, it's what you do with 'em. kit lens is sharp, too.
but i'd still want to go with the newer and better d80 if you can afford it, maybe even the d40 if you can't. the d70 is a great camera which had its place in the sun, but is now obsolete. still, if you're upgrading from a P&S, this will seem like a godsend. if you're lucky, you can scoop it up on closeout and save even more.

Customer Reviews:
I liked it.......2007-07-04
I lost this player, but when I had it it worked great. I like how if you turn it off and on, it plays the song that was last there before you turned it off
Great Little Player.......2007-06-03
Had this for several years. The audio quality is great. The volume is good enough to continue my long march towards deafness and its slow consumption of AA batteries would make Al Gore proud.
controls: excellent, very little chance of accidentally jumping tracks when I meant to adjust the volume.
track ordering:
I haven't used its play list feature much (at all). I have organized my tracks in folders and either shuffled the whole player or just played the contents of a folder sequentially.
syncing:
It shows up as a thumb drive, so copying works well. Equally useful is the Windows Media Player's sync feature (yeah, Microsoft seems to have finally gotten that right for the non Zune side of things).
e-books.......2007-02-10
Purchased this item primarily to listen to downloaded digital books.
The fault I find is: It dosn't hold my place in the book, if I change to radio or music. Result, once I begin listening to a book I pretty much don't switch to another mode until the end of the book.
tricky.......2007-01-09
This is the first MP3 player I have ever had my hands on, and I must say, it's not bad. It's just a little tricky to figure out.
Sadly disappointed.......2006-12-04
I bought this MP3 in April 2005 when I was visiting the US from UK. I loved the size and capacity and loaded it with all my music when I returned home. By Aug 2005 the unit kept cycling & stopping through the starting sequence and I had to send back to Samsung in UK as I couldnt even get into it do any tests with Customer Support over phone.
The service centre were very helpful and prompt in fixing the problem. They didnt know why it was happening (it was a new product they hadnt used in UK) but checked with US and downloaded new s/w version which resolved the problem, so I was very happy until summer 2006 when it happened again!
This time I didnt wait till it got unusable and downloaded the most recent version of s/w onto it myself and it worked again, until November.
I am now giving up on it, which is a great shame as its a lovely size and very simple to use, upload to etc. I even find the radio has great reception even though its illegal to listen to radio on MP3 in the UK.
I will be steering clear of all samsung products if this is how well they dont work.

Customer Reviews:
Great Value, solid build quality.......2006-12-03
This lens compares very close to my Canon 17-40mm f4L lens. This lens does not have HSM (Canon equivalent of USM) so it is slightly noisy yet it focuses pretty fast except in low light conditions. Accessory flash is a must if you are using indoor low light shots.
Even though it says 15-30mm actual coverage is only 16mm at the wide end. I was a little dissappointed because I bought this lens thinking I would get 15mm because I own 17-40mm. I have not gained much in the wide side.
I paid less than half the price of Canon for this lens. This lens feel very solid.
Sharpness and color saturation is superb.
All about what you need..........2006-05-09
Let me preface this by saying that I have been seriously into photography for about 1 1/2 years now. I say this b/c often times when I am reading a review I don't know the persons level of expertise. I am no expert. I would consider myself a beginning amateur. If you would like to see some of my shots (in order for you to make up your own mind about how heavily my following comments should be weighed) check out cappspreception.blogspot.com. The photos are ordered from most recent to least recent. Onward...
Pros: 1) I was hard-pressed to get ANY glare off this lense. HUGE PLUS! 2) I was able to get extremely close (physically close) to my focal point allowing for precise DOF. 3) I have not been able to tell a loss of quality with a the aperature wide open (3.5 or 4.5 depending on zoom). 4) The built-in lense cap is a pro and con, depending on the situation. 5) Great feel to the lense. Nicely weighted, sturdy.
Cons (the few I have found): 1) Noisy as hell. Of course I own 2 L-series so I am not used to that at all. 2) It hunts worse than my other lenses. But, again, I own the L-series and they don't have this problem. 3) The built-in lense cap casts a harsh shadow if you are not using a bounce flash, so if you don't own a flash be prepared to use a tripod or steady hands b/c this thing will block the built-in flash all day.
Overall I am stoked to have finally bought a wide-angle. I feel like a whole new world has opened up to me and I was thrilled to not spend $1200! I recommend this, but be prepared for the few (minor) cons that come with it.
Incredible buy!.......2004-01-16
Performance:
This lens couldn't be much sharper at 15mm, it is pristine. Softer at 30mm, though still better than average corner to corner. I like that it seems optimized for 15mm. Very impressive, Sigma. Some flare, but any 15mm zoom is really prone to that. f3.5 is a little slow, but at 15mm 1/15 sec works for handholding, so it isn't a problem. Incredibly deep DOF at 15mm, makes for spectacular foregrounds, sharp from your feet to the horizon (at least with a cropping DSLR). 8 blades is very respectable for a lens of this price and not much is usually OOF.
Build:
Superior. Suprisingly light for it's size. Fast AF. The 82mm front thread is accomplished using a felt lined cap that slides firmly over the permanent pedal hood. A little awkward but it works a lot better than it sounds. No vignetting with an 82mm front filter using a cropping DSLR at 15mm, I doubt the same would be true with full frame where the angle of view is really uncanny.
Overall:
Arguably the best in its class, great price makes it even better. Everytime I see the images I thank myself for buying this lens.
