The Tide of History.......2007-03-13

These are currently available on eBay for pennies. They are not old enough to be antiques, and not new enough to be valuable, and they do not have a culty reputation. In fact there is very little about them on the internet. They are however capable cameras. I have run a couple of rolls through mine, and the lens was sharp and clear. It is basically an Olympus Stylus Zoom 105 with a leathery covering, neither of which are bad things.

As far as I can tell there was an original Olympus LT-1 model, which had a more expansive leather case and a fixed lens, which was followed by the LT Zoom 105, which is this. Olympus has not repeated the experiment. The LT 105 is an autofocus, auto-exposure point-and-shoot 35mm compact camera with a built-in flash. It has no manual features. It fits into a pocket, and it is weatherproof. It is comfy to hold and has a lens that zooms from 38-105mm. It takes a single CR-123 battery. The case feels warm and leathery, although it is synthetic. The camera can sense DX encoding. The lens goes from f4.5 to f8.9, which is decent for this kind of camera although not spectacular. The speed feels retrogressive - the previous generation of fixed-lens point-and-shoots were f2.8, and the popular rangefinders of the 1970s were f1.7 or thereabouts. I suppose the flash compensates for this. You can turn the flash off. There are several flash modes, although I have not used them. It is light, but feels tough, as if it would survive a drop onto grass, and probably a short drop onto concrete. It does not have an accessory shoe. The lens does not have a filter thread. There is an electronic self-timer. The film transport mechanism and shutter are both electrically powered. According to the manual, the shutter goes from 1/500 to four seconds. The tripod socket is under the right edge of the camera, below the battery compartment.

There is nothing wrong with the pictures. The exposure is fine and the lens is sharp and clear, although I did not take anything with the camera zoomed in, and I did not test the camera. I took some shots of traffic at night, and they came out. The autofocus seems to work, although I worry that there isn't a manual focus mode (in fact the camera refuses to take a picture at all if the subject is closer than 0.6m). The camera has some usability quirks, and overall I prefer my older Olympus XA2. The XA2 does not have autofocus, DX encoding, zoom, auto wind, or a built-in flash, but it is smaller, handier, has a brighter and larger viewfinder, and a faster and slightly wider lens.

The LT's first problem is the viewfinder, which is small and dim. It is very poor. In low light I can barely see anything through the finder. In fact, when the light is dim I can barely find the viewfinder at all, let alone see through it. Part of the problem is that it is directly in the centre of the camera's back. If it had been an inch to the left, it would have been easier to look through. If your head is not aligned straight down the middle of the finder, it is opaque.

The camera is noisy. When you turn it on, the motor moves the lens into place. When you take a picture, the motor winds to the next frame of film, and when you finish a roll the motor winds the film back. When you zoom, the motor whirrs. It is a loud motor. Even in a restaurant, people around you will know that you are taking pictures. In contrast, the Olympus XA2 is basically silent. Furthermore you can easily take the XA2 out of your pocket, open it up, and put it back in for later use. The L105 is pocket-sized when it is turned off, but the lens protrudes when you turn it on. The lens caps protrudes even more. The lens cap deploys downwards, and acts as a makeshift stabiliser, or a titchy lens hood if you hold the camera upside-down. The lens cap doesn't retract when you turn the camera off, and it's easy to forget this. Several times I tried to put the camera back into my pocket, and the lens cap got caught up in my clothes. It's my own fault, I suppose. Like all the brightwork on the front of the camera, the lens cap is plastic. There is no place for an alternative lens cap, and I imagine that spare lens caps are as rare as hen's teeth. Hens don't have teeth, you see. That is where that saying comes from. A hen is a type of chicken. They have beaks.

The zoom lens protrudes almost three inches from the camera. It is undeniably phallic, although less than half the size and girth of a real phallus. If you erect the lens to its fullest engorgement, people around you will grin. It zooms quickly, although noisily. The camera looks silly with the lens zoomed out, although it is unfair to dock points for this, and I will not. The zoom range is handy, but f8.9 at 105mm is very slow. At that level it's basically a portrait lens for good light outdoors - and you won't be taking sharp long-range shots at air shows, or candid portraits of your sunbathing neighbours, it doesn't zoom that far.

And in all likelihood you won't be taking any shots with this camera at all. It is a film camera, and falls into a nether region, as I explained at the top of the review. It's not old or curious or definitive or posh enough to be valuable, and for the kind of shots you are likely to take, a digital camera would be a superior choice. Mountaineers and sentimental photographers who need a backup will probably go for a stylish and slightly culty Olympus XA, or one of the regular Stylus models, and nostalgic photographers will want something made of metal with manual focus. For itself, it's a decent point & shoot, but the tide of history has ebbed away from it.

The other reviewers mention a problem with winding. I have not experienced this, but then again I have only run two rolls of film through the camera, so I can't comment except to say that I can't comment.

Love for the LT.......2004-02-14

I've been using this little camera now for about four years. Pictures always came out great. Only problem that I've had --and I've had two of these-- is the problem of the early rewind --but only with professional Kodak slide film E100's. The film just seems to be tighter wound. Never had a problem with Fuji Velvia or Provias. Another problem with all slide film has been scratches running the length wise down the negatives. I'm guessing the emulsion must be thicker on slide film or something leaving absolutely zero tolerance for even the slightest bit of dust. Even with that in mind and being really careful about dust, I still get those scratches on occasion. I take this hiking with me and I've dropped it from 20 feet on to rock and this camera hasn't missed a beat. I just wish they were still in production. I hate those occassional scratches but you can't beat the shots that you get. I'm just taking even more precautions now when loading film in the field. I've tried the later Stylus Zooms (80 and 140) and they don't compare. I'm guessing the light meter and lens is superior in the LT.

Great Camera..........2003-07-25

I bought this camera for times when I get tired of lugging the big SLRs around.
The Olympus LT Zoom 105 has never failed. The Panorama setting is amazing. I have a wonderful set of photos of lost cemetaries in North Dakota against the vista and sky that includes the whole settings and scenes... This camera makes friends like a cute dog with a red handkerchief around its neck draws babes. I was the only person not chided and kicked out of a photo session at the spectacular wedding of my step son by the professional photographer. He looked at my LT Zoom and said...."go ahead ... I love that camera. I have been trying to buy one." Regarding the complaints above: Before blaming the camera, read the manual !!! The flashing "E" means that YOU, yes YOU did not properly load the film. The usual reason is that you did not feed enough of the end of the film to the device that grabs it and sets up the first shot. Reopen the camera and feed it a little more film. (I can't believe that complaint came from the Land of the Leica.) Also, I have never had an 'early' rewind. I am guessing that is the fault of the camera operator as well. If you accidently screw with the "mid roll rewind button" on the bottom of the camera IT WILL REWIND as it is designed to. Yes, I to did it by accident. There is nothing wrong with this camera. It is a great camera. I use Minolta and Nikon SLRs and a Nikon 4300 for digital pictures but the sentimental and reliable backup lying on the front seat of my car is the Olympus LT Zoom. Sorry, the critics are wrong.

More Style than Substance . . ........1999-09-21

I agree entirely with the reviewer from Germany - and actually had the EXACT same trouble with my camera, at nearly the EXACT same time! At just about a year, the camera became completely unreliable in its rewinding ability - rewinding on its own in the middle of a roll, or even worse,incompletely rewinding at the end of a roll, but indicating that it was completely rewound (and then THAT roll of film is toast!)

Yes, it's sexy. And it attracts alot of attention. But just like all eye candy - it's great for a one-night stand, but not anything you'd want to be married to . . .

After 15 years of flawless performance from my Olympus XA, I purchased the LT Zoom 105, expecting similar reliability. Not long after the warranty period was over, the camera starting rewinding film in the middle of the roll, then started refusing to wind film at all, all the while flashing a meaningless "E" in the display. The camera shop said it would cost $100 just to open it up to look at it, and then give an estimate. So I've got a $300 piece of electronic junk sitting in my drawer. I wrote to Olympus and received no reply. Why should I - the camera's out of warranty. Well, I'm back to using the old XA, which is a gem. But my next point and shoot camera won't be an Olympus.

For the price this combo was a good buy and works great. Remote control is a little confusing without the instructions but you can figure out the basics. Product was described correctly and packaged well.

Problematic DVD player.......2007-07-05

I have to echo the comments of other reviewers in that the DVD player was very picky in what disks it would play, and finally stopped playing disks all together. The unit sounds like it's spinning up the disk, then it would stop, and this would repeat for up to a minute. Then I would get an errot message that the disk could not be read. The real error was buying this unit. I don't know if this unit is a contract job manufactured by some low end company that slaps the SONY name on it, or if the SONY products are just getting worse, but this is my second SONY product that I've had problems with. The first was a home theatre project unit. It felt like it was in the shop more than in use. I have a feeling SONY will tell me I'm out of luck.

If I could give zero stars I would. You will not be able watch any rental movies with this DVD player. Even brand new DVDs right out of the box are a gamble. The "play" and "menu" buttons are for show, they do not work. If all the planets are aligned, your movie might play after turning the player off and on, and hitting eject and set-up several times. Even then, this player will not play an entire DVD movie all the way through without major stutters and skips. Shame on Sony for selling such a piece of junk. I didn't expect such bad quality from such a big name.

TOTALLY UNRELIABLE.......2006-07-27

I bought the whole Sony system including the surround sound with this product. About 6 months after I bought it, the DVDs would occasionally fail to load. One would fail, and then the next 2 would work, and I just persisted on. When a DVD failed, it would not eject. It would take anywhere from 5 minutes to 8 hours to eject, turning the player on and off. Three out of four times I played a DVD, it NEVER failed to skip or freeze up. I've finally had it - I'm putting it in the Good Will box and getting something else. I was silly, silly for not returning the thing immediately, but I kept on having faith it would work itself out. NOT.

It has good and bad.......2006-05-30

Around the same time, we had bought two DVD players, a Mintek ($40) and this Sony ($200.) I have to say I like the Mintek a lot more. This Sony Combo is very picky on what DVD's I put! The Mintek is able to play ALL data, most video, and even a PAL DVD from Italy. But the Sony, which costs way too much more, is not even able to play any of that. :(. Although, the reliablility level is very good. It really has never given us any technological problems. But I am saddened to see that Sony dosen't allow so many kinds of DVD's. Also, we have had experiences when this DVD would freeze in between parts of movies.It does play DATA MP3 CD. (Which thats a good feature.) The VHS player is very good and has not given any problems. I would reccomend this to someone who dosen't use data CD's with , AVI or any type of media file.Also its good for DVD's which are either WORLD or NTSC region. If you are someone who watches only DVD's and VHS, than this is for you. Thanks and God Bless.
