The Olympus Stylus 300 is perhaps the best go-anywhere point-and-shoot digital camera, thanks to its all-metal, weatherproof exterior. While not as "Elph-in" as some other compact digital cameras, the Stylus 300 is easily pocketable for on-the-go photo fun, from sightseeing to impromptu get-togethers. It's also very quick to respond on start-up. Just slide open the clam-shell cover, and the Stylus 300 is ready to snap pics in about 3 seconds.

The Stylus 300 is made for automatic point-and-shoot possibilities, and the camera offers some basic scene modes (landscape, night, portrait, and self-portrait) and white balance settings (daylight, overcast, tungsten, and fluorescent). The menu system accessed through the 1.5-inch LCD continues the Olympus tradition of a well-mapped-out software system.

The Stylus 300 is just the right size--compact enough to carry anywhere, but not so small that it's hard to operate.
We were quite happy with the exterior, providing a lot of area from the right side of the camera to the lens, which helped to eliminate fingers getting in the way of the lens. Additionally, the shutter button at the top of the camera was nicely sizeable for our chunky fingers. We were a bit disappointed, though, with the size and slipperiness of the function buttons on the back of the Stylus--the all-metal exterior was just too smooth and the buttons weren't rubbery enough.

With the 3.2-megapixel resolution, you'll be able to capture enough image detail to print decent 11 by 14 print enlargements. But the best thing about more pixels is the amount of stored pixel information, which enabled us to crop images on our PC without losing much clarity or sharpness. At the highest quality setting, you'll get 2,048 x 1,536 pixel images, but you can also step down to lower pixel ranges--from 1,600 x 1,200 to 640 x 480.

You can also record small QuickTime videos, though we found the movie mode to be fairly basic compared to some of the other new releases of 2003. Since there's no built-in microphone, your movies will be silent, and you can't utilize the zoom while filming. Choose between 320 x 240 for 16 seconds and 160 x 120 for 40 seconds.

If you're looking for pure point-and-shoot pleasure, the Stylus 300 is the camera for you. It's nicely automated and ready to snap pics in a flash. We were also quite happy with the battery life, though you might want to invest in an additional battery (model LI-12B) as well as a higher-capacity XD card for safety's sake. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Storage and Transfer

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the Stylus 300 can also record movie clips of up to 40 seconds without audio. You Can Find a Better Camera Than This One..............2007-06-06

I am so mad I purchased this camera. The design is really bad. The slider is a pain, and from reading these reviews...I am just on egg shells every time I slide it open to take a picture. It is not a very simple camera to use. Sometimes it take good pics but usually you have to hold it perfectly still to get them perfect. I definatley prefer my mother-in-law's Power-Shot by Cannon. I wish I would have spent a bit more and purchased that model! Hind sight is 20/20... Take my advice and tons of others...Skip this one.

I need an update.......2007-05-17

This is the first digital camera I have owned, and I have used it for 4 years (only one battery!). I always wondered what I was doing wrong when the pix were so blurry with the flash off--but now that I read the other reviews, I see I'm not the only one! And my sliding door has the opposite problem--I can't shut it, and my camera will not turn off. I'm ready for something much better, with a stablizing feature, but this camera was a pretty good basic way to enter the world of digital photos.

Works well for our puposes.......2007-02-11

We have had this camera for almost two years, possibly longer. This little camera was a good for our workplace to take photos of people for reference. Overall, the quality of the photos can go up to 3.2mpg, good enough for a 11x14 photo, but all we need is 3x5-4x6 maximum, so excellent for this. Also it features a 3x optical (still low end standard zoom today) and a 4 x digital zoom (which relies on megapixels). total zoom 12x, not bad for this little design. The price on this right now is excellent for the features, the software still very similar to the newer stylus models (710,740,750,760,810,and 1000). This does not have a digital image or optical image stabilization, which was not available from olympus at this price range back in 2003. It does featrue the panoramic feature available with type m and type h olympus brand xD cards (a code that comes with the branded card unlocks the code in the master software on your computer). What this feature does is allow you to stitch up to 10 photos together seamlessly for a 360 degree view if wanted. Neat. Check this out as an everyday use, on the go camera. It is weather resistant (sealed to prevent splashes ect, good in rain). Good entry level camera for kids today.

good camera ; bad seller.......2007-01-11

I own another camera just like it. The seller sent me a damaged camera and has refused to refund the cost. I would never buy anything form her again.

Beware of the slider.......2006-12-27

The camera was average in my opinion. Did what you would expect from a camera in this range, but never liked the low lighting pictures. I was always concerned about the sliding door, as it seemed like a bad design from the get go. Well the door broke yesterday and now I see these reviews of the problems others have had. It confirmed my suspicions. Since it's an older camera now, continue to use it, but sooner or later the sliding door will get you. Now I'm trying to figure out a way to take the door off and rig it, so i can still take pics.

Excellent Value!.......2003-10-31

Wireless networking is the coolest thing ever! After minimum configuration of the WAP I was sitting at my dining room table, wirelessly connected to the Internet with my laptop. I installed the WAP configuration utility on the desktop in my basement (running WindowsXP Pro), and got the same error as one of the other reviewers: this software only supported on NT, blah, blah, blah. But yet the utility actually did install, and worked perfectly, so I don't know what his problem was. Besides which, all configuration is done through a web browser anyway, and they give you the default IP in the manual.

If it weren't for the glitch in the software install I would have given this product five stars. Regardless though, this is still the best value for the money of any 802.11a access point on the market today.

Doesn't work on XP.......2003-09-01

The packaging, the manual, etc. all claim that this device is compatible with WIN XP. However, the configurator utility always stops during its install and says "This software will only run under Windows NT 4.0 and its derivatives", and then the install quits. Without the configurator installed, it's impossible to configure the device. I don't have an NT machine. Anyway, I thought XP was derived from NT...

A call to SMC informed me that technical support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - but the next voice told me they could not take my call just then, and their system hung up. That has happened three times.

There's no download at the SMC site for an updated configuration program -- unless it's very well hidden, and not on the page with the other downloads for this device, like a user's manual -- which I read in case it differed from the hardcopy that came with the access point itself, and it was the same.

I'm off to write SMC to inquire as to what exactly the deal is here. Somehow, I don't feel all that hopeful.

Very Fast, and Usually Reliable.......2002-07-21

In our office, we have a network with this access point and four of the associated wireless cardbus adapters (SMC SMC2735W EZ Connect 802.11a). It is very fast and works great for most applications including accessing data and file server with no speed issues. Occasionally the most remote users loose their connection to the access point and that can be frustrating, but they are over 60 feet away and separated by three interior walls.
Is the extra speed necessary for internet access - no, but for heavier file and data sharing applications, it helps. The rated speed is 72 MBPS, but it does degrade over distance, through barriers, and during other random times.
We are happy with this network solution - it was easy to install and configure, and saved us the cost of installing a wired network in someone else's building.

An excellent player with no problems for almost two years now. The only problem is the FM tuner, it is not working well but this doesn't bother me at all. It is very good player and comes with arm band for fixing while doing sports.

Finally, a great player for Audiobooks!.......2007-01-14

I was really nervous about purchasing the Rio. It's gotten such mixed reviews on this site and others. But, it was the only player I could find on the market that did everything I needed. And, after a few months, I have to say, I am very pleased with my purchase. I now believe that most of the unfavorable reviews are from older models and Rio has recently gotten the kinks out.

I used this player for audiobook/podcast exclusively. I have never loaded music on it.

I needed a player that was:
1. Expandable (I have a separate device that allows me to schedule recordings and save them to an SD card, I needed a player to put the cards into)
2. FM Radio with record feature
3. Autoresume (I bought this player to replace my RCA Lyra which lacks the autoresume feature; a player is useless for audiobooks without this feature).
4. Audible.com compatable
5. PlaysforSure/WMA compatable (I download audiobooks from my local libraries onto the player).

I am very pleased with my purchase. This player is one of very few that was made with the audiobook lover in mind. Not only does it do autoresume, you can save your place on up to 9 different tracks! I have only found 1 other MP3 player manufacturer that offers this feature. My only complaint is that the SD card slot in a bad place (behind the battery). So, I don't switch cards as much as I expected to. However, I was pleased to find that the player accepts my 2gb SD card. The 4gb card didn't work, but I think that may be a problem with the card.

Great MP3 Player.......2006-12-29

I have had this unit for quite a while now. I actually bought two of them. I don't use it often but when I do it works great. Very easy to use interface, good sound. I like the fact that you can add memory to it. Be advised: it takes Secure Digital cards but per Rio, only up to a 1 GB card. That is what I use and it works great. The software is awesome. Extremely easy to use for anyone, even if you are not much of a computer user.

My Rio Forge 512 MB Sport works great.......2006-11-27

After several months with this Rio, I haven't had any problems with it and I've been extremely pleased with my purchase. I bought this right before the iPod Nano came out, and I've thought several times about replacing the Rio... but the Rio's performance hasn't given me any reason to replace it. And the interface is much easier than the iPod products -- plugs right into my computer as a USB storage device. I can copy music files right over, without having to rely on iTunes or similar program.

I especially like the expandability option -- additional SD card increased the storage capacity.

Although I had my doubts when I first purchased the Rio Forge, I haven't had any problems whatsoever and I'm completely satisfied with this product.
