A Pretty Good Buy.......2003-05-16

When buying this camera, I had huge expectations. I previously had a canon, however it was getting a bit old. When I purchase a camera I look for one that is stylish as well as good quality. Many of my friends recommended olympus' cameras to me and so after much research I finally bought the Stylus Select 105. When buying this camera, I expected a top of the line pocket-sized camera. I half-got what I was expecting. It takes wonderful outdoor pictures which are very vivid and clear. However, in dark rooms or at night the pictures can get a little grainy and not as bright as I would want them to be. In the beginning, I tried using the nighttime features as well as the red-eye, however, DO NOT use it unless you have a tripod with you. The manual recommends a tripod, but I decided not to listen and tried it anyway. My returned pictures were blurry and awful. I couldn't even put them in my photo album they were so bad. But I'm much more careful now and don't even bother using the nighttime or red eye features. They're not even worth using unless you carry a tripod with you everywhere you go. Maybe the stylus select 105 did not live up to my expectations, but I do have to admit that it is very sturdy. Also, the camera case givin in the kit is horrible. Don't expect it to provide any protection. The stylus select 105 probably wouldn't need the protection, but I prefer to have some kind of padding protecting my camera even if it has an all-metal body.

an everithing-in-one cam!.......2003-04-11

This is such a good camera!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is so small, ALL-weather, metal body, a powerful zoom, a big LCD screen, and if that's not enough, it comes with a complete set that contains the camera(duuuh), a CR2 battery, a case, a strap, an extended warranty, and a remote control. What else can you ask for? Maybe you can say the zoom is actually not so good, but a lens of 38-105m, is actually a pretty nice zoom, because if you have a mega-zoom like 150 or something, you're never gonna use it!
If you are those who drop the camera very often, then this is your chance. A complete metal body so it won't be broken, and if you drop I mud it's all weather!
I extremely recommend this camera, besides, I don't know what happened to meubanks64 or something because it always takes sharp pictures with so nice colors.

Disappointing.......2003-02-07

I waited with much anticipation for this camera to be stocked after reading about it's new features in the press release in the fall. I purchased it as a gift for my wife for Christmas because our 6-year old Olympus Stylus Zoom 105 needed major repair. Our old camera took GREAT pictures - sharp, balanced exposures, great variable flash, etc. So, I had no problems buying another Olympus. I looked at the existing Olympus Zooms (115,140,170), but after comparing the pictures from my brother's Zoom 115 to our old Zoom 105, they still didn't seem as good. So I decided on the new Zoom 105.

Overall, the new Zoom 105 camera is significantly (~15%) smaller than the old one. I like the cool metal shell better than the old plastic one. I was hoping that the AF system was as good as or better than the old one since it claims to be a 'new 11-point multi-wide advanced combination autofocus'.

During an outdoor (daytime) event, we shot a whole roll of film using the new camera (fully-auto settings) in a variety of settings while my brother's wife used their Zoom 115. After comparing the pictures side by side (same processing), the shortcomings of our new camera are obvious. The pictures are VERY disappointing. The focus is not near as sharp as the old camera, or even the Zoom 115. The edges of the shots are much darker, also. We have taken several rolls in various environments all with roughly the same outcome. Perhaps we just got an early production-run lemon. For Olympus' sake, I hope so.

Quite acceptable performance.......2007-01-29

Given the bargain price, I was a bit dubious about this purchase, but I ended up completely satisfied. I was using pricey name brand batteries in my beeper, and they were giving me about a month's service. The batteries give me the same month's service and sometimes a bit more.

One tip. If you're not going to use them quickly, put them in a sealed plastic box in the lettuce section of your refrigerator. The cooler temperature should give them a longer shelf life.

They are okay for eight or so dollars, but they don't last very long. Then again, I used these for a digital camera so maybe that's why they get drained so quickly. However, for the price I still would buy them again.

Old Adage is True "You Get What You Pay For".......2005-10-26

I was hoping for a great deal on these batteries, but like other reviewers I've found that they run out of juice incredibly fast. I'm amazed that other reviewers have had such good luck because things like my wireless keyboard which uses two AA's ran out of juice in a couple days of normal use while my automatic sprinkler time that uses two AA's lasted only a week.

Be warned that these aren't quite the bargain they may initially seem.

I have used about half of these batterys. Mostly in clocks and different items around the house, but also I used them in the flash for my camera and they held up real good.

I have a lot of rechargeable batterys, but these are better because they last a lot longer. Often the rechargeable batterys only last for a few months if that long. Alkaline batteries for me can last for up to a year and longer.

If Amazon went back to free shipping on these then I would buy them up and give them to friends as a gift or a prize. I do not know what the shipping is, but it may still be worthwhile. I just know so far these batteries have held up real good and I would highly recommend them.

Won't play DVDs-don't buy!.......2007-01-29

Made a huge mistake with this unit as I played all VCR's--tried a DVD once and saw it did not work but I thought it was the hook-up so I never returned it. Now I want to play DVD's and the hook-up is correct but the picture is double and twisted. Discussed problem on-line with Sony and they told me it needed servicing. We hardly even used it all.

It plays VCRs fine but not commercially produced DVDs. Totally worthless and not worth fixing.

Don't believe the claim that it will play MP3s.......2006-12-22

I've had this unit for 3 or 4 years now and, overall, it performs its functions well. It's played every DVD I've thrown at it, as well as most JPEGs; and its rewind is blindingly fast. HOWEVER, don't believe its claim to play MP3s -- it won't and the manual even says it won't play them! In fact, of the 4 or 5 friend that own Sony's only one's unit will play MP3s. If that's important to you, take the safe route and choose another brand.

Unit has worked great........2006-04-01

I've had this combo player since early summer 2004. It replaced a Samsung combo player which was junk. (Stay away from Samsung products - but that's not what this review is about.)

The Sony's performance has been flawless. One of the things I most like about it is its ability to read different media - DVD+-R/RW. I have a newer Sony DVD changer which only reads DVD+R/RW.

There are a couple of minor quibbles (noted by others). The progressive scan button is annoying - you can only change it on the unit itself and sometimes you have to work with it to turn it on or off. The other thing is that when you turn the unit back on sometimes it seems that the output selection has been changed and you have to work with it.

I've noted several reviewer gripes about this unit and this one must have been in a production run after the kinks were worked out.

Does not deserve even a 1 star.......2006-03-21

Sony sucks. This is the worst product I ever bought. Guys, trust me you will be more satisfied if you buy any other unbranded DVD player rather than Sony. It does not even play a brand new DVD. I heard Sony is losing its market these days, this product proves it.
If you want to spend your time with Sony customer service with useless discussions, just buy this product.

does not play .......2005-10-04

dvd freezes up 30 minutes into a movie and audio works terrible. does not play jpeg's very well or dvd-r or dvd+r. just consider this think one big expensive vcr with a useless dvd drive. Bought a cheap samsung model and it works ten times better.
