I've been waiting and tonight I finally downloaded the update for Core Duo PC's running Vista. It works just fine. All the posters who said it would never work with Vista should rethink their surety about issues. Thanks Olympic for not giving up and going with it till you got it right!
Go to the Olympic website and download the driver upgrades. They only work if you have installed the application from the CD that came with the recorder. Enjoy!
I record radio programs and use "Switch" (it's free) to change the wav. to mp3 and then listen at night on my Palm Pilot. What a gas!

Excellent Product.......2007-08-25

This recorder has a clip so you can clip it to your shirt or your pocket to record a conversation. The new Olympus recorders don't. The microphone is very sensitive and picks up birds chirping in the trees. You cannot install the software into Virtual PC on a Mac though. There is no Mac software to quickly transfer the files. You have to use the Mic output to record anything to your Mac which takes however long it took to record the source.

Personal Recorder with an eye for the common geek in us all.......2007-06-17

This small, exceptional, gifted device is a life saver. Literally. I drive for a living and many times need to make notes to remember later. Writing and driving can lead to bad discussions with state employees who want to hand you pretty pink paper. This device saves all those moments and makes life SO much easier. You can record a LONG time on this little device. It takes each recording and puts a number for it. So the first recording you make is 1, the second is 2, and so on. You also get "folders." So you can have folder A, B, and C and have messages 1, 2, 3, under those folders. Then there is the easy fast forwarding of recorded messages to seek to the exact info you needed. THEN we get to the ability to download your recorded messages to the PC.

For the price it is hard to believe. I bought a refurbished one so I saved even more and the one I got looks (and works) like it is brand new. Very happy with this purchase and now I have backup to my pen and notepad, especially for when I am driving...

I am an author who gets the majority of her ideas during inopportune times. The voice activation feature means all I have to do is talk when my hands are soapy from doing dishes. The voice activation shuts off the machine when you stop talking (unless you bang some dishes and create more noise.) Voice Activation would be more accurately named "Noise activation."
Even though it looks as if it would be complicated, it's really simple to use.
The alarm feature is nice and even goes off when the unit is not on. When you hit the stop button when the alarm is going off, it plays the associated file you recorded.
It doesn't have an "OFF" button, instead it's called "HOLD." There is no extra little watch battery to "hold" the settings when you switch the battery, so this setting is necessary if you want to keep your settings. It doesn't seem to affect battery life much. I'm still using the battery it came with, no problem.
The main reason I got this model was because it hooked up to the PC; transferring my story notes to the story folder on my PC. I was expecting text files to come out, but it gave me .wav files. The software needed to download the sound files is the Olympus Wave Player, included on CD. It is for Windows 98/2000/ME/XP. I have ME and had no problem either with loading the software or downloading the .wav files from the recorder. The whole thing is smaller than my cell phone, yet people with large fingers don't dispair. The buttons are easy to use.

good for voice recording.......2006-08-14

This item is as it says, a voice recorder. It however is not good enough for recording music. This software is good and the product is easy to use. Even though I sent it back I'm still giving it a four out of five because it did voice recording just fine, I needed something to record music.

Good little recorder.......2007-06-25

I bought this with an add-on microphone; however, the microphone on this has been so good that I haven't needed to use the add-on. Really, this is a great product; however, it doesn't work for Macs. At all. You really have to have access to a PC to use it. The software that comes with it is not great. It lets you easily make a .wav file; however, if you want to edit it you need another program. I use Audacity (free download) and love it. So, with a combination of downloading and transferring the .wav files to the PC and editing it on my Mac with Audacity, this podcasts my classes beautifully. I just wish that it was Mac compatible and had better software.

Viking is Superb !!!!.......2006-07-24

I own 3 compact flash cards by viking and bought them in this order, 128Mb, 256Mb, and recently 2Gb. I have never had any problems with any of these cards and have always looked for Viking Compact Flash cards whenever I needed any.

This 2Gb card works perfectly with my Ipaq pocket pc storing a variety of files from mp3 to mpeg (video) to word, excel, and maps for my pocket pc gps system.

I did try a Lexar card once and found it did not work with my pocket pc as well as this one as not all the files on it were recognised.

I will always buy Viking compact flash.

Very flaky, contrary to Viking's reputation for quality.......2005-11-08

I've owned various Viking branded memory cards in the past and have always been pleased with their performance, until I purchased this 2 GB CompactFlash card.

It's possible that this card works well in other uses, but I found its performance unacceptable as storage for RAW images shot with my Canon Digital Rebel SLR. Anywhere from 1/5 to 1/10 of the images were corrupted, particularly bad in continuous shooting mode. Contrast with my Lexar Media 512 MB and 1 GB cards, which were able to shoot reliably with no corrupt images under the same conditions, and without as much of a lag time as the Viking card (often left waiting 15+ seconds after shooting as few as 3 continuous images while the card to "recovers").

Viking CF cards 100% reliable for me.......2005-07-22

I've used Viking CompactFlash cards in digital cameras for years and have *NEVER* had a problem with *ANY* of them. Never a glitch; every bit has always come through perfectly (and I did have a glitch with a CF card of leading brand "S..."). I do not own this particular Viking card, but I've owned 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB Viking CF cards and used them in 3 different (Canon) cameras. As far as I know, this 2GB CF cards uses the same technology as at least the 1GB card I use all the time.

All that said, standard Viking CF cards are "8x" write speed (about 1.2MB/s write speed). That is slower than many other CF cards. That may be an issue for point-and-shoot digicams with limited image buffers, but I've never found that to be a problem in digital SLRs with large write buffers -- the camera continues to shoot more photos while the Viking card finishes writing to the CF card. For the price, the Vikings have been "winners" in my book.

A previous reviewer commented about difficulties with Viking Customer Service -- I have to wonder what the problem was that he experienced with the *product* that let him to call Viking's Customer Service in the first place? Was it anything serious, or did he just have a question? He never said.
(Not that the Cust Svc comments he quoted are excusable, if true; but they're so outrageous that they're a little hard to believe).

Piece of junk.......2007-01-08

Normally I wouldn't say something like this about an SMC product but the thing couldn't even reach 10 feet direct line of sight from the wireless router. On top of this we were using a very powerfull router so it shouldn't have had a problem within a hundred and fifty feet. The only way we could get it to work was wired and that defeats the purpose of a wireless print server very poor work on SMC's part and this really surprises me because everything else we've gotten from them was excellent...

This device worked fine on my network with a little attention to detail... Here's how to configure it if using Windows XP.

1) With the power off, plug in the printer to the print server's USB port. Plug one end of a standard network cable into your wireless router and the other into the print server.
2) Plug the AC adaptor into the print server.
3) Install & start the Bi-Admin software utility. It should seek out the print server successfully if your completed the first two steps. (An alternative is to use web interface to configure the networking settings, WEP etc - if you know the IP for the print server ahead of time)
4) Configure the print server with the Bi-Admin utility. Record the IP number down of the print server for future use (eg 192.168.2.3) It should be readily displayed.
5) Use the IPP printing protocol to setup your Networked printer under Windows. eg http://192.168.2.3

Good luck, the print server is a decent product unlike other reviewers have stated.

Lousy manual, lousy software, terrible support website. At one point I did get the device to cause my printer to jump, but never to print. You will be a much happier person tripping over wires than trying to set this thing up.

Printers: Brother MFC-3420C, Epson Color 880 - neither worked. Computers: HP Celeron Notebook, Mac G4 OS 10.2.

Good for WiFi/Ethernet hoockup. Product is basic, compact-- one port. Everything seemed fairly easy until the documents would go to cue but not print. I eneded up on the phone with tech support (which was very responsive) for hours that, after exhausting every other caveat, told me that the problem was with getting the right IP from the print server. NOWHERE in the enclosed instruction or the CD-ROM manual is there a note of the little resessed button labeled "Diag" on the server which, once pressed, prints out the damn IP address. Once I had that, everything worked fine. So four stars for the product and tech support. BIG ZERO for the manual.

Best CD-R Media.......2001-01-30

TDK's are the media I trust most to use in my HP drive. I have had lots of problems with other types of media during burning, but rarely(if ever) encounter problems with TDK's. These discs also play back in every single audio CD player I have. Buy these discs over Sony, Maxell, Memorex, and Imations whenever you can.
