NEVER RECEIVED PRODUCT.......2007-09-08

I have waited over a month for the item to arrive but despite several emails to the merchant I have had no luck. The merchant sent an email to me describing an elaborate shipping method they use that may take up to 21 days, however it has been over a month now from when the original purchase was made. Considering that shipping was not free on my end I am disappointed completely with the purchase to say the least.

Conventional digital-to-analog conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can't remove it completely. Previously only found on Onkyo's high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result: a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal, based on the digital source, that brings out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DV-CP702 will deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats, and you can select an output resolution of either 96 or 48 kHz, depending on the input capabilities of your receiver.

The player's Last Memory function lets you resume playback from a specific point on a DVD-Video disc or video CD, even if that disc has been removed from the player (you have to put it back in first, though!).

Mine died after less than two years of very little use. One day, the tray just opened and started spinning and does not stop even if you turn it off using the power button!?!

Good DVD Player, but Not All its Cracked Up to Be........2006-08-15

Just purchased the Onkyo DV CP702 to replace my Onkyo CV C-601. The picture quality of the new unit is excellent, resulting primarily from progressive scan circuity. Audio playback of CD's is also improved over my previous model.

There are two problems with this unit based on evaluating it for the past couple of weeks. First, the remove control sensor has a limited vertical and horizontal field. I find myself having to hit remove buttons more than once to get a response back from the DVD player.

The biggest disappointment is in Onkyo's inability to play JPEG files. I loaded a CD with .JPEG files, and although the Navigator came up and worked as it should, when it came to looking at an individual picture of starting a slide show, the unit scanned each picture line by line, resulting in it taking over 30-seconds for a complete picture to be displayed. I contacted what Onkyo calls Customer Support. After waiting 21-minutes to be helped, I was told by the Representative of the company "that's the way it works, and there's nothing you or we can do about it".

Since Onkyo is obviously aware of the limitations of this DVD player in presenting .JPEG file ls in a "reasonable" amount of time, I believe it has a responsibility to report this to customers in their product description, so that customers would be able to use this information in making a choice as to spending $165 for this DVD player, that it some respects cannot perform things like playing .JPEG files as good as a $60 JVC or Sony (entry level) unit is capable of doing.

I will be returning this because dissatisfaction of the product and misrepresentation on the part of the company as to its capabilities. I've been a loyal Onkyo owner for nearly a decade, however, this experience will result in my having to reevaluate my trust and confidence in Onkyo as a viable manufacturer of consumer electronic equipment.

i got myself this baby not because of a test but due to the flashy red box it was offered in :)
installation and setup under win2k didn't produce any problems and since i have it i have killed only one out of 200 CD-r's (which it burns in less than 5 minutes!)
pretty impressive for an IDE-toaster for that price.

Sony does it again....the drive is good, the package is not.......2002-05-15

If you purchase this drive, be prepared to go buy other burner software to get it to work at it's potential. The included software is awful. At this point, the drive is not supported by Roxio's Easy CD Creator Platinum's latest version (5.1). It does work with Nero, which I'm still learning now.

When buying software, I expect there may be problems getting it to work with my hardware. But when the mfg of the hardware includes the software and it is less than adequate with only a limited trial period & built-in self destruct, that makes me want to avoid that particular mfg.

Sony makes great products, but their included overall package and technical support historically is poor. This one is consistent with their tactics.

Hot tip: do not buy stock in B's CD burner software.

Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for some TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use 2 inputs, however, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats.

I'm pleased with this unit.......2007-03-20

I've had this unit for over a year, and I'm very pleased with it. My only complaint is that when I kept it on once for a few days straight, using its tuner instead of my TV tuner, it stopped working altogether. It was okay when I turned it on the next day. I've found that if I keep it on only when I'm actively watching a DVD or a VHS, then turn it off afterwards, everything's fine with it.

I was expecting a quality Sony product when I bought this. I have another sony DVD player that I have been using for about 3 years without any problems. This unit is another story.

After 4 months of use, the player stopped working with DVD/RW disks. A few days later, manufactured disks stopped working, now a few days later, no DVDs will play on the unit.

I am so glad I got an extended warranty, because I am going to go and pick up my third new unit today for another 4 months of usage before the inevitable failure.

Sony SLV D56O.......2006-04-26

I have 2 of these and am thinking about a third, but I really want to get a DVD recorder/VCR unit that has the one feature of this that I really love. And that is the "Dail Timer" on the front of the machine. We aren't really into technology so I don't really know if the video/dvd quality is any good, and I rarely use the DVD player, although I don't recall having any problems when I did, but I record ALOT of shows and the dial timer lets me set the unit to record without ever having to turn the TV and recorder on. It's really neat and I use it tons. The SONY DVD/VCR recorder unit doesn't have this feature which is why I may get another one of these. I put a splitter where my cable connection comes into a room and don't even have these units hooked up to a TV...although I do have to hook it up to a TV if I goof up the programming and need to use the screen to delete or change the recording info. The remote is pretty lousy but then I never really use that either...just the dial timer...and that works great.
