One year and no problems.......2007-05-25

This is a great receiver if you need it for amping up your iPod, CD player, or any other audio device.

Its setup is very simple and the sound quality is excellent. I got a refurbished unit and it has not given me any problems over the year.

The only con is that it does not have an equalizer built into it - however thats the case with most receivers. You can purchase one separately if you want. It does have the usual treble and bass controls on it though.

Its a perfect solution for those that want a small system setup in a room that does not need a 5 speaker system or a complex system.

2 channel stereo receiver.......2007-02-02

When my 10 yr old JVC $200 stereo receiver dropped 1 channel, I figured that it would probably cost more to fix that it was worth. Info on the Internet indicated that the Onkyo TX-8511 receiver was one of the few remaining 2 channel stereos left on the market. I was prepared to pay the full price for one, but found that it had been discontinued; it was only available as a refurbished unit that carried the new unit warranty. After some thought, I bought the refurbished unit. Not a single problem; it took a little time to set things up, but not nearly a difficult as the old JVC. I recommend this to anyone who doesn't need multiple channels; it's a winner. The remote control is vastly superior to the old one- it can power on/off & has features that I don't use, but someone may need them.

The Best Receiver I've Ever Owned.......2007-04-28

I've had this receiver for over a month. Hooked up to two Sony MB350 speakers the sound is awsome. It does have a loudness switch. Turn on the selective tone control and it gives real deep bass. I also love the tape monitor which enables me to monitor recording discs. The radio reception is also good. I use thick speaker wire as an antenna and it does the trick. I'm able to receive at least 20 stations. A great receiver! Way to go Onkyo!

I had put off transcribing my extensive vinyl collection to cd for a variety of reasons. But, a couple of months ago I decided to go ahead and start the project. I still had and was very happy with my mid seventies two channel system consisting of a HK730 Receiver, Akai GXC750D Cassette Deck, Dual 1246 Turntable and Wharfedale W90D speakers. I didn't have a CD recorder and I had been dissatisfied with the results of running my source into the sound card of my computer. So, I started researching products and found that there wasn't a whole lot to choose from in the moderately priced range. What I ultimately settled on was a Sony RCD W500C recorder, Polk Audio R15 Compact Bookshelf speakers and an Onkyo TX 8511 Receiver/Amp. I could not be more pleased with the outcome. The Polk Audio R15's are near perfect for the relatively small room I have them in and the Sony CD recorder does it's job well, accepts analog as well as digital sources and produces excellent archival copies of the original vinyls. The Onkyo TX8511 was the biggest surprise though. It turned out to be a solidly built, clean sounding and powerful unit that delivers more quality and punch for the dollar than I would have expected. My criteria for a receiver/amp when I began my research was a unit that could produce a clean 50 to 100 watts rms into 8 Ohms, had dedicated tape and phono inputs and line outputs, a reasonably good tuner section, two channels, A/B speaker connections and not much else. The Onkyo delivered all that and more. I've never been an audiophile, and I'm not into surround sound or the bells and whistles that go with todays state of the art equipment. But, I did read a lot of comments and reviews about all the potential candidates for my little system and the one recurring complaint I read about the TX 8511 concerned their cheesy speaker connections. Get over it you guys, there's nothing wrong with them. You just need to be smarter than the connection. Either make sure your speaker lead ends are sufficiently long and tightly twisted before you insert them into the clamps or tin the ends first with solder. If I did have a complaint, it would be the lack of a subwoofer connection, but I can live without it.

We're using this to go from PC audio card to speakers for a small gym. It works very well. Simple. Low price point. Reliable.

this Onkyo pales in comparison. It is servicable and clean sounding but unfortunately has a tinny, sharp sound. Not much in the way of warmth or depth, even after messing with the bass and treble controls. BUT for the $ ( as my 15 yr old Nakamichi died, despite 2 trips to the repair shop) it is worth it. The customer service from One Call ( where I bought mine via Amazon) is top notch, I had concerns ( no sound came out , intermittant problem, seems to be OK now) and they were very helpful and willing to take return. I decided to keep it, as the price was so wonderful and the sound, as I said, is decent and clear, but I plan to save up and eventually get a receiver that plays with more warmth and depth. This is perfectly fine to tide me over. I would recommend it, just know that there is a sharp, mechanical tinge to the sound.

I am having some problems with my receiver and, from what I've found, you can't contact a live customer support rep if your life depends on it. I've sat on hold for hours trying to get someone. Complete joke.

I bought this monitor based on the advertised premise that it was a high grade .22mm dot pitch CRT. Upon opening the box I realized I'd been had; the box is clearly marked .26mm dot pitch. To make matters worse I paid $30 extra for 2nd day delivery only to have it take 5 days to be delivered.
I rate this transaction 2 thumbs down. If it weren't for my desperate need to have a working monitor to aid my physical imparement, I would return this in a heart beat. Amazon, you should be ashamed of yourself!

I loaded the software, nothing worked. I called SMC for tech support. The person asked when I bought the product. I said I just got it. He said they didn't offer tech support any more, it was an old product. He said I could pay ten dollars and have some other company help me. I sent it back and bought a different kind.

This card is not very good. It has probelms picking up some wirless networks and DOES NOT HAVE WPA capabilities - the description given is not true! The software supplied in near to worthless. You may think that maybe I have a bad card but that is not the case - I bought 2 of these and they are both 'low rent' - maybe it is my computer - no again tried another card (belkin) and a centrino and a laptop with wireless included and they all worked without problems.

This is a lemon - walk on by!

Short Range and Untable.......2004-10-07

This card is easy to install. Works fine with WinXP on my Dell Inspiron 2560. However it has weaker range/reception comparing to the Belkin card I had before. It drops the connection pretty often at 50ft with one wall in between. The included software utility shown 95%~100% signal level and link quality at the time. The reading drops to 0% straight, I have hardly seen any other %number between 0% and 95%. Once in a while I lose connection in very close range of less than 10 feet! I do not think it is very reliable product.

It works great on linux, the wireless I bought was gray on the bottom and its chipset was not amdTek's that's found on most of the forums. I downloaded the driver from http://rt2400.sourceforge.net/ compiled and it was ready to rumble.... I luv Linux!!

These CDRs are the best.

Everyone, including professional reviewers, recommend them over the Sony's, Imation's and Memorex'.

Plus, TDK has one of the best CDR factories, actually the best followed closely by Sony and Imation.

Don't go for the Memorex, go with TDK, and avoid those pesky coasters with other no-names.
