Lousy DVD recorder.......2006-02-25

I have the earlier DMR E50 and I have just taken the lid off to see if there is anything an engineer can fix in the troublesome peice of expensive kit. Its sort of reassuring to see so many others here who had had EXACTLY the same problems...the machine crashes, locks up, can't recover even by pulling the power out, just because it dosn't like a disc, but then it won't let you get the disc out. It has consumed hours and hours of my time. It will only work with Panasonic discs..nothing else.... but now after 12 months it is just more and more choosy about exactly which disc...indeed it is now no use at all. £400 down the drain, I used to like Panasonic. Don't buy it.

Ability to record gets worse and worse.......2004-10-17

I bought this recorder to keep movies and shows I had recorded from my Ultimate TV (similar to TIVO). At first it did okay, failing about 25% of the time. It started having a higher and higher failure rate using the same types of discs. I have tried many brands of disc and had the same results. It is especially bad with long recordings over 3 hours. The failure rate now is probably 80-90%. I will not be buying another Panasonic audio/video product.

Excellent DVD Recorder,.......2004-09-22

Easy to use and record. The quality of the recording is perfect. I converted all my Hi8 tapes to DVD and able to play on all kind of DVD players. I was also able to create the menu on my recorded Disk. It won't record the movies, If they are copy protected, otherwise you can record the movies from TV.

Worthless.......2004-07-20

I have owned this recorder for several months and found it to be the most frustrating piece of electronics I own (including my computers). I finally took a hammer to the unit and it felt so good! I have on several occasions tried to record long movies and have this unit "crash" near the very end (forcing me to re-record the movie and spending another 3 hours). I have often spent much time getting this unit to record to a disc -- restarting the recording process after a crash -- perhaps as much as one out of four recrodings. Often I cannot get the unit to open and give access to discs that have crashed. (The on/off button has no over-ride, like a computer, to reset memory.) I have been using Memorix blank DVD's and would suspect that they are of fairly good quality -- yet I probably lose 10 to 20 out of a 100. I must wonder if the hard drive isn't just too wimpy to be a good recorder. The manual says that it may be necessary to clean the lens for the laser. I ordered a panasonic lens cleaner for over $30 (they sell the same type of device at Wal-Mart for $9) and cleaning the lens has no effect on performance. I will not be buying any more Panasonic products for some time to come. This is a rip-off.

WORTHLESS!!!.......2004-07-20

I had my unit for several months and I finally took a hammer to it. It is a shame that our government can't protect the consumer from being exploited by companies like Panasonic that make crap like this DVD recorder. It often would "hang-up" and impossible to get the discs in or out -- the little door simple would not open. I have spent up to 30 minutes tryng to get it to record on a disc and ended in failure. I have recorded on several occasions long movies only to have the unit crash near the end and have to re-record my program (another 3 hours). It is the most frustrating piece of electronics I have ever owned. It is a rip-off !

The BA-35 from Texas Instruments is an entry-level financial calculator with features that small-business users will likely find useful, but it may not have the power students need to easily solve complex classroom problems. The calculator is powered by a solar cell--there is no battery backup--and comes with a hard plastic cover that can fit on the back of the calculator when it is being used.

The BA-35 is extremely thin, and although the button layout looks cluttered at first glance we rarely mis-keyed entries. The buttons are also sensitive enough that little force is required to get them to register input, yet not so mushy that simply brushing them causes mistakes. Unlike many of the calculators in this price range we've tested, the BA-35 actually comes with some useful documentation. A quick reference card with examples of important calculations like converting annual percentage rates to annual effective rates and entering statistical values is placed inside the calculator cover so you can always keep it handy. A small but surprisingly thorough pamphlet lays out the rest of the calculator's features, covering topics like compound interest and annuity calculations, and providing many illustrated examples for common procedures like computing mortgage payments or determining loan eligibility.

It is possible to enable the calculator to display any number of fixed decimal places, and a percentage key can be used to easily add tax, subtract a discount, or determine a percentage ratio. There's also a Percentage Change key to easily find the percentage difference between two values, and Dedicated Cost, Selling Price, and Markup keys for quickly calculating profit margins. The BA-35 may not have the advanced statistical modes and other complicated features of a more expensive financial calculator, but its combination of portability, price, and practical functionality should appeal to small business users who don't need all the nice extras they used to solve hypothetical problems in business school. --T. Great for money, great longevity.......2004-06-30

I bought this calculator for my first finance class 12 years ago. While it does have some limitations such as not being able to work with uneven cash flows, it is still the finance calculator I grab when I want to figure something out in a hurry (I also own an HP 19BII and TI BAII Plus). The BAII Plus does do much more for only a few more dollars, but it is not as quick for simple finance calculations. Further, the BA 35 is still in perfect shape after much use, while the BAII Plus' display has begun malfunctioning and some of the digits do not show up at all now. The BA 35 is a great calculator, but ultimately, I would suggest the HP 17BII (which I have also used extensively, but do not own) if money is not a consideration.

Underrated but Outdated.......2004-02-19

The Texas Instraments BA-35 is a calculator who's time has passed. It does allow the practiced user to ammoritize loans or value annuities with amazing speed, but today there are better options out there.

Deficiencies: 1. Lack of algebraic logic, it just does the calculations in the order you enter them. 2. inconvenient memory- it takes several keystrokes to store or retreive from the memory (but you can use the 5 financial registers as memories). 3. wears out too easily- I have had the displays on 3-4 of these calculators go whacky on me. This is not a problem I have had with other TI models.

There are lots of cool tricks you can do with this calculator, but even the Society of Actuaries has moved on to allow more capable models.

Virtually everyone should own a business calculator........2002-09-14

Everyone who borrows money to finance a car or a house should own a business calculator. It can quickly compute in advance how much your monthly payments will be once you insert the amount borrowed, the yearly interest rate, and the number of payments. Or,if you prefer, you can insert the amount of the monthly payment you can afford and calculate the amount you can afford to borrow or the number of payments over which you will need to spread out the loan. You will also be able to protect yourself against accidental or deliberate errors made by the lender. For the purposes outlined above, the Texas Instruments BA35 is a very good buy at a bargain price. If you need a more sophisticated business calculator I recommend the Texas Instruments BA II Plus.

Underpowered and overpriced.......2001-07-27

Anyone who purchases a BA-35, uses it and then tries out the TI BA II Plus for about 12 bucks more is going to suffer a bad case of buyer's remorse. The 35 is woefully underpowered in financial calculation capability compared to the next higher level of financial calculators. The reason I have one is that is is one of the required calculators for the actuarial exams (for reasons I have yet to figure out).

My overall recommendation is -- if you want a financial calculator that has actual capability, spring for either the HP12c or the TI BA II Plus.

A good, basic business calculator.......2000-09-15

I have a TI BA-35 that I purchased about 15 years ago and it still works. It has just the basic statistics functions (found on almost all scientific calculators) and compund interest/ time-of-money calculations, but that's all a small business generally needs.

It came with a great book, teaching elementary foundations of statistics and finance. I do not know if the present version comes with this book, but I would hope so. I never had a statisitics course in college, but with this aid can do some meaningful analysis.
