If you intend to use this on a non high-definition TV, then I would highly recommend it. It looks sleek, is easy to use and works well. I have had it for almost two years, and it still works well.
However, if you are buying this for a high-defition TV, I would look somewhere else. I had originally purchased this for my 55" High-Definition TV, but I could see the progressive scan on the screen. It was a line going from right to left vertically across the screen. It was not very visible, but once I saw it, I could not forget about it. I then bought the Sony DVP-NC685V and moved the Panasonic to my basement where I do not have a high-definition TV and thus do not use the progressive scan. Since then it has worked out great, and I have no complaints. The Sony had a better picture quality for high-def, but broke after a year.

have had this dvd player for about 2 months with no problems so far. the only complains are small - takes a while to read the disk and can't rotate all the way around when open (only to adjacent disks).
Plays all disks, even DVD+R.......2004-03-26
I bought this with some reluctance - it was less money than the equivalent Sony player, and didn't specify whether it could play the DVD+R format - in fact it indicated it wouldn't. But as the Sony player was out of stock, and the day after Thanksgiving deal meant I got this player for only $79.99, I went for it anyway.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that all the DVD XCopy backups of my movie collection, in DVD+R and DVD+RW format, played just fine.
As for the quality, everything is superb. I haven't had a single problem with any format of any disk, so I'm not sure why the first reviewer had problems.
The sound quality is great, and even though neither my $50 6-speaker home theater kit, nor this dvd player have any sort of Dolby or DTS decoding ability (just some sort of emulation mode), the sound output from the combination of both is nearly perfect, which the correct sounds going to the correct speakers. Planes sound like they are flying over and past me, etc. Occasionally I lose some of the center speaker and subwoofer sounds - but this is not surprising considering the cheapness of my sound system.
The other features are superb, especially the incremental zoom function - together with the presets, this helps deal with the stupid 16x9 widescreen format that the movie industry has decided to inflict on us - which is the reason we get black bars even on wide screen HD TV's. Only the original widescreen format movies will fill the screen of a widescreen TV, so why we have to have this butchered format is beyond me.
As for the Lord of the Rings comment, both the extended versions of the Fellowship and the Two Towers play without any glitches in my player - however these disks are incredibly delicate. I was forced to replace the Fellowship after a minor scratch destroyed 50% of disk two, so that no dvd player, Sony, Magnavox, even the PS2 would play it (which in turn was the reason I invested in DVD XCopy, so I no longer run the risk of damaging the original copy of any of my more prized movies).

Perhaps it was just the particular unit I received, but this player had a problem recognizing DVDs and often wouldn't play them. Thankfully, Amazon has a great return process which made it easy for me to send it back for a full refund, and order the F85S model instead, which is so far working great!

I actually had to special order this one from my local electronics store based on a lot of research. I'm pleased that I did every day.
The picture quality seems very good with rich colours. Sometimes it is abit slow navigating through menus but I've never had a problem with playback. The picture quality on every movie I've played has been very good. But this isn't really why I bought this player.
The real kicker on this player is for those of us who have discovered DVD-Audio discs. If you don't know, DVD-A is a high-resolution audio format that encodes up to 6 channels of very high quality audio on a DVD disc. The quality of these discs (most of these discs) is stunning and if you have it hooked to a quality home audio system, you will realize a depth to your music that you never heard with regular CDs.
The video from this player is as good as most others, but the audio coming from anything you put in is far superior to other players that are even close to this price range.
I recommend this player to anyone who is critical about the audio quality coming from their speakers rather than just the image quality on their movies.

Each GMR885-2CK radio is equipped with a user-selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that you can use for hands-free voice transmissions when used with an optional headset and microphone (the Uniden HS2467). Transmission is initiated by speaking into the remote microphone instead of by pushing the PTT button.
The GMR885-2CK radios can also receive weather broadcasts from the NOAA National Weather Service. In weather-radio-alert mode, the system functions as it does in GMRS mode, but also monitors the selected weather channel for alerts when not communicating. While using the weather radio, you will not be able to receive GMRS communications.
Each radio works on 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and offers 38 CTCSS privacy codes you can use when talking with members of your party. In order to speak to someone, each of you must be set to the same channel and CTCSS code.
Channel scan lets you easily scan all 22 channels. When an active channel is detected, the radio will pause on that channel until the channel is clear. Then, after a 2 second delay, the radio will continue scanning. To transmit on a given channel, press the PTT button or power-boost button while the scan is paused on your desired channel.
A unique circuit dramatically extends the life of the batteries. If there is no transmission or incoming call within 3 seconds, the radios will switch to power-save mode. (They may still receive transmissions in this mode.)
Other features include a backlit LCD, keypad lock, channel monitor, a choice of 5 different call tones, and a roger beep.
Power the radios using the supplied rechargeable NiMH battery packs or 4 AAA alkaline batteries each (not included). If you use the rechargeable NiMH battery packs, the 2 radios can be charged simultaneously using the charging cradle. Each radio has a battery-level meter on its display to indicate the status of the batteries.

works up to 4-6 miles apart on sunny day with little obstrucions like trees, houses, bulildings, etc.

My hubby and I got these as a Christmas present and I have to say they have been a nice gift.
We hadn't had a chance to really test them until recently, and we were both impressed with their performance. We haven't tested the range out in the flat, wide open, but we were able to get a range of about 2 miles in the moderate hills, trees, and buildings in town.
The NOAA Weather option is pretty nice, especially when you want to get a quick, area-specific forecast. The weather alert feature would also come in handy to let you know when bad weather is coming your way.
The reason we chose these specific radios was because of the good reviews from others here at Amazon, and I'm happy to say that they steered us in the right direction. There are other features that might have been nice to have - vibrating alert, or hands-free headphone/speaker set - but these radios contained the most of the features we were looking for. We're not disappointed.

I bought these as my personal radio as chief of a search & rescue and emergency communications provider. This replaces a good Radio shack 4 watt radio that was great, but ugly, bulky and heavy.
Our team has tried motorola radios, audiovox and magnavox. All of which my kids now use. Motorola does not hold a candle to these Uniden radios.
So far I am pleased with the durability and range, but I can not find ANY printed statement of the power output. It just says "up to 8 miles" which we know is not going to happen. I hope this is a 4 watt radio, but I somehow doubt it. Probably 3. The fact that they dont even say makes me wonder if it is less.
Still, with the NOAA reciever these are far better than COBRA which cost alot more and work as well as my kids old power-rangers walkie talkies.
One complaint though, on the smaller uniden radio gmr325-2 the keypad lock has a single keystroke to lock and unlock. On this radio you have 6 keypresses to lock and then you havev to turn off the radio to unlock. On other brands, and other unidens this is not so. And on Motorola you can resume the keypadlock even after powering on and off. But that is not enough to make motorola radios worth buying over this unit.
BTW, someone here tried to compare these to HAM radio. That is not a valid comparison and I dont think he knew what he was talking about.
Im only giving them 4 stars becasue they failed to tell me the actual wattage of this radio. So I cant say if its a 5 star product now can I?

I bought these radios over the motorola radios because of the reviews on this site. I purchased the radios for my buddy and I to use when we go skiing. So far, we have not had any problems using them on the slopes with mountains and trees all over. We have not however, tried to max out the distance. The one complaint I have is that I can't for the life of me find any type of carrying device, like an armband. This is where the motorola radios come out ahead. Having to stop and take my gloves off while skiing so I can unzip my pocket to get to my radio is getting annoying. I may try to fit the uniden radio on a motorola armband, but I have no idea if it'll fit. Oh, I have also had the speaker and mic packed with snow and have used it in wet snow conditions and it hasn't let me down, so they seem fairly weather resistant.
