Amazon.com Product Description

Designed for a small to medium-sized home theater, the Pioneer VSX-516-K delivers robust surround sound to a full-blown 7.1 speaker array, giving your movie soundtracks the rich audio they deserve. The receiver is built around Pioneer's exclusive Hybrid Amplifier design, which drives 100 watts of power into each of its seven channels. Pioneer receivers also include such defining attributes as a digital signal processing (DSP) technique called Sound Retriever, which brings CD-quality audio to compressed formats; nine advanced surround modes; and a high-quality 192 kHz, 24-bit digital-to-analog converter that allows CDs and other audio sources to reach their full potential.

Movie buffs will dig the VSX-516-K's multiple surround decoders, which include DTS-ES Discrete, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo:6, Dolby Digital EX, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx. In addition, you don't need to buy a full 7.1 speaker setup to use the VSX-516-K out of the box. Not only does it support 5.1 and 6.1 systems, but you can also use the two surround-back amplifiers to drive the main front left and right speakers, giving you an extra 200 watts up front. It's the perfect setup for music and movie fans who want a combination of power and versatility.

The VSX-516-K also includes a number of audio extras, including a dialogue enhancement function, a midnight listening mode that suppresses the volume during particularly loud passages (ideal for households with kids), an AM/FM tuner, and a virtual surround back mode that makes it sound as though you own rear surround speakers even when you don't.

With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the VSX-516-K can accommodate a ton of digital sources, such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite receivers, and more. The rear panel options include three digital inputs (two coaxial and one optical), two component video inputs and one outputs, three composite inputs and one output, a 5.1-channel input, and a subwoofer preamp output.

The receiver measures 16.56 by 6.25 by 13.88 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-08-27

This is a great product for the price. For a home theater aplication this amp does more than expected. And for the price you just can ask anymore. I got this amp shipped very quickly and received it without any problems all the way in Aruba! The amp has a bunch of preset EQ's so you'll find one that'll fit you. I run these through old but faithfull Pinnacle 200 monitors and some RCA surrounds and the whole set just begs to be played out loud. It's been a while since I felt rumble in the room from such a deep bass. I think it's part amp part speakers. If you match them correctly you won't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and it works.......2007-05-12

Easy to set up, anyway you want. First I did it with 3 speakers, now it is hooked up to 5. It was simple to reprogram the surround sound from 3 to 5 speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Handles the Sound End.......2007-02-15

This entry level A/V receiver does a fine job of powering my home theater 7.1 speaker setup. It has ample power to make the Infinity Primus Theater Pack(5.0) plus Primus 360 fronts and Sony SA-W700 subwoofer sing. No apparent distortion at any sound level I can bear! Only minus on speaker set-up is that all "small" speakers must share same crossover point to subwoofer. Has one digital input with a multitude of sound effects. Handles digital input decoding automatically and well. Also has 5.1 analog inputs for SACD. All-in-all a lot of bang for the buck!

5 out of 5 stars Best $100 ever spent........2007-01-16

This is a great little receiver. At the price I paid it's untouchable. I wasn't even planning on buying a receiver but for the price I paid plus a $20 gift card, I couldn't resist. Besides, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade the older Sony I was using that was relying on my DVD player's DD and DTS decoding. I was reluctant because I had not done any research but I figured dirt cheap entry level cira 2006 had to be better than dirt cheap circa 2000.

After having tried it out, I'd have to agree with the few professional reviews I could fine. One reviewer said if you didn't need all the bells and whistles of this reciever's older sibling the VSX-816, this one was sonically just as good minus 10 extra watts per channel. CNet said the 816 was a much better value, but they weren't taking into account how much I had paid. They said the 816 was an excellent value. And The Perfect Vision named the 816 as part of their budget system of the year. They said, "This receiver sounds good and works well, meaning it's nothing like typically wimpy-sounding budget AVR's." So if what the reviewers were hearing was anything like what I'm getting from my 516, I think I made a sound investment.

As for the sound, it is noticably clearer than my old receiver. It certainly has much more updated features than my older receiver including Componenet switching and 7.1 surround. It does not, however, have s-video switching, but I was using an outboard switcher for lack of switching on my old receiver anyway.

If I were paying full price, I would definitely pay the extra $100 and go for the 816. But then actually, I wouldn't have bought anything because, as I said, it wasn't actually in the plans. I'm glad I got the deal though. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the price.......2007-01-10

If you aren't looking to spend a lot, this is a great deal. Sounds great; and where can you find 7.1 receiver for $170??? Plus I got $30 off for signing up for the Amazon credit card.... so I got it for $140, which is less than what I payed for the older generation 5.1 Pioneer I used to have!

1 out of 5 stars Excellent reciver with major reliability problems!.......2006-11-11

Had my VSX-29TX for 4 years now. WARNING- Needs annual repair! Excellent receiver when it works. Pioneer messed up royally on the DSP circuitry design. Needed to have it repaired at least once a year. Pioneer has not recalled or accepted responsibility for the poor design. I had the unit fixed 3 times for the same exact problem done under warranty, then they refused to fix even though it was still under warranty!! So big bucks and it died again! Everything works, but no sound. All the signal goes through one control chip that has issues and is not mounted to the board properly and that causes all sorts of problems. Very common problem, and there are pages and pages of descriptions and complaints all over the net for a series of these receivers from Pioneer that use the same DSP setup. Even the replacement boards develop the same issues within a year or two. I know of 5 of these receivers and every single one has had the same problem numerous times. But when it works, NICE! Can't recommend it due to the extremely poor reliabilty factor. Only guaranty is that it will fail!!

4 out of 5 stars Great receiver....watch out for the repairs!.......2003-02-19

I have owned this receiver for three years. I run a very high end setup and use most of the features and most of the connections.....my wife is finally starting to get used to the 6 foot 19 inch rack in the living room.... .....

The LCD touch screen remote control is especially nice, better than the Pronto/Marantz unit. Being THX Ultra certified means that complex speaker impedances can be used without fear, because they test to 3 ohms under load during the certification process....one of the few units on the market that will drive almost any speaker you could purchase.

The bass management is very well thought out and will amaze you when it follows the component selection, output type, and DSP selections around as you make your choices. Very nice not to have to always make adjustments once you get them set.

I too had to have a repair....the DSP chip on the early units seem to be a sore spot for Pioneer. Everything goes through this chip! When it has a problem you have a big problem. The total cost of repair for me was "a substainal amount of money". The chip cost was about 35 bucks but the thing needs to have a chip socket installed to have the replacement fitted. That means tons of labor and then testing.

So far the six month old repair with the new chip and it's updated firmware has performed as good or better than new. Since this unit is discontinued and has been replaced by it's bigger brother the VSX-39, I would spend the extra bucks on that unit with an extended warranty, rather than buy used, but that is just me.

Anyway you cut it, you cannot beat this product!

    1 out of 5 stars Pioneers Best.......2002-12-06

After 3 years of ownership Pioneers Best just quit, repaire cost [is expensive].There are better Quality Equipment out there I would never ever buy another piece of Pioneer Electronic gear.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......1999-12-16

This reciever is not just an average product, it's designed for the hi-end user, thus the price. If you can spare the cash this is an excellent buy. With support for both DTS and Dolby Digital sound you are guaranteed high quality sound from any system combination, from tapes all the way to DVDs. Pioneers excellent reputation for quality is certainly upheld with this fine product. I can recomend it to anybody who's willing to spend that little extra for a 1st class product.

    5 out of 5 stars re: Specifications.......1999-12-10

...It is usually helpful to go to the manufacturer's web siteto get specifications, anyway, as resellers as big as Amazon can't beexpected list full descriptions for everything. give 'em a break. :-D this piece of gear has everything, even the AC-3 RF input for the Pioneer laser disc players. I plan on purchasing this, as well as the Pioneer DVL 919 (laserdisc, DVD player)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Receiver, not enough power.......2006-05-06

I've owned this for >2 years now. Of late the receiver has started going into Amp Error mode and I believe this is because it is unable to deliver the high current the speakers demand for movie watching. One thing to note is I am using this in the 5.0 mode with no subwoofer and that may be one of the causes.
Otherwise, the sound is very clean, setup is very easy and intuitive, connectivity is abundant, features are easy to access, display is easy to read from a distance too, remote is well designed and it just works. I have not been able to find anyone with similar issues to mine for this particular model, but a net search shows other Pioneer models with a similar problem.

4 out of 5 stars Good - but not great.......2002-11-16

I've had Pioneer receivers for 15 years with no problems. The Power switch went bad just over a year-I guess they figure you will use the remote and skimp on quality. Other receivers in this price category have better overall build quality and seem to be rated higher by the experts. Denon, Yamaha, H&K, etc.. in the over 1000.00 category have better build quality. Setup was easy - and there are plenty of features. I have a Harmon Kardon as well and it's not as user friendly but has great sound and appears to be built better overall. I guess I just expected more from the Elite. (mostly, that it would not need repairs in less than two years)

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to the promise.......2000-01-18

Although on paper this receiver is great value for the money, it demonstrates the same flaw as a lower-end Pioneer receiver that I own -- namely that there's a quiet but perceptible hiss from the speakers whenever the unit is powered on.

When sound is going through the unit this hiss is obviously masked, but it's annoying that it happens at all.

No more Pioneer amplification equipment for me, I fear.

5 out of 5 stars Cut Above The Rest........1999-12-23

I have been a fan of the Pioneer Elite brand for some time now.As a satisfied owner of the Elite 300 disc CD player and Pioneers top Elite tape deck, this reciever now joins the group. The components used in this and all Elite products are of high-grade audiophile quality. The THX certification(Ulta),also makes this player one of the best value THX recievers on the market. After you have set up this unit properly and are (I hope),using good to better grade speakers, your ears will be treated to a wonderful listening experience. This unit has all the features you could possibly want and more.Though its bigger brother has a little more power, and elegant cherry side panels, both units are equal in performance, and at half the price,I would recomend this model unless you have a very large theater room.

      5 out of 5 stars Great THX-Ultra Receiver at a Great Price.......1999-12-20

This receiver has so many features it takes a while to set it up. However, once you have it set up, its truly fantastic. It has the highest THX certification (with a good set of speakers you'll swear your living room sounds as good as a theater), assignable digital inputs for flexibility, and more S-video inputs than you'll probably ever need. Perhaps best of all, its learning remote is so good I can finally control my TV, Receiver, DVD, CD, VCR, Tape and Cable with just one controller. This receiver isn't inexpensive. However, in my opinion its by far the best receiver for the money.

          Amazon.com Product Description

The SD-V390 offers a convenient, one-unit source for high-quality entertainment in both DVD and VHS formats. The progressive-scan DVD deck offers high-resolution video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and plays a variety of optical content, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD, as well as MP3 software files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-V390 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Additional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

A four-head, hi-fi VCR gives exciting, stereo playback for your entire library of VHS tapes. It's even possible to play a DVD while simultaneously recording a TV broadcast to videotape. For enhanced picture quality during VHS playback, the 4-head hi-fi VCR utilizes a pair of 19-micron video heads, which deliver exceptional (near SP) picture quality of content recorded and played back in the extended play (EP) mode. Making VCR recording even easier is record-end search, which quickly finds the next space available on the tape for recording, eliminating the need for endless rewinding.

Into digital photography? This unit's JPEG feature makes it easy to view digital photos burned to recordable CDs. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. In addition, readily accessible front-panel AV inputs permit easy connection for a game console or a camcorder for simple dubbing of home movies to the VHS deck.

          5 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-04-11

I have had the V390 for alittle over 1yr now and it seems to play just about anything I can Put into it, had some problems with vsh heads getting dirty but I fixed the sponge arm that cleans as they spin and have not had a problem since I bought it referbished so I figuered it was over looked at the factory.
But I am very happy with the units performance as a whole.

3 out of 5 stars Good Player Until?.......2006-02-03

This player was working great for me two years. But this week it started playing dvd-r disks half way through and then skipping through chapters till the end. It seemed to work playing my longest movie of 46 minutes up till this year. My latest movie is 1:26 and quits about half way through. I play it on my other stand alone Toshiba Dvd Player SD-3960 and it plays all the way through no problem. I don't know if its a problem its always had that I just didn't see cause my movies were never this long or if its just a hardware problem that has cropped up and will occur with any dvd disk. I did have a rented Columbo disk do the same thing 4 nights ago. We'll see

          1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Product.......2004-02-29

Video Tape recording quality poor and sometimes wouldn't record at all even after cleaning the heads and buying new tapes. Warranty is useless.

Remote is poorly designed. Also, you cannot use the numeric keypad to set the time when you want to record.

Switched to the Panasonic DVD Recorder with an 80 GB hard drive and will never go back to tape.

I know a lot of people are against combo systems, but I have never had a problem with this machine. It performs great and tapes well.
