Image Stabilization
Sharp uses electric picture stabilization that keeps your images smooth and steady. Natural jerks and shaky holding will be smoothed over with this function turned on.

Optics
The 1/4-inch CCD has 680,000 pixels for sharp and clear imaging. The 10x optical zoom is effective for most purposes, but if you need extra close shots the camcorder can zoom up to 500x digitally. For low-light situations, the camcorder can operate in slow shutter mode for slow-moving or stable objects and night lumi mode for bright objects at night.

The VL-Z3U features a 2.5-inch color LCD and a black and white viewfinder. The LCD monitor incorporates new CG silicon technology to achieve high luminance and definition, making viewing easy even in broad daylight. The rechargeable battery snugly clips inside the frame of the camcorder, rather than outside like most other camcorders. This makes the camera less bulky and easier to carry.

The camcorder also has a memory slot that is compatible with Secure Digital or MultiMedia Cards, so you can take digital stills and import them onto a computer via the USB port. The standard IEEE1394 (Firewire) connection can be used for digital video editing, while the standard AV output terminal is used for viewing on TV or dubbing.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the new preferred format for personal and broadcast-quality video, highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. With up to 540 lines of horizontal resolution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 20 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

this camcorder is pretty long in the tooth & I doubt many are still buying it, but in case you are thinking about becoming a new owner -- add my experience to the last few who posted reviews prior to mine. This machine was great on paper, and worked pretty well the first year or so (during which I wasn't using it that often -- maybe once or twice a month). But after a year it got to the point where it wouldn't load a new cassette right away, then only after trying repeatedly, and then, finally ... it wouldn't load a cassette at all.

Great product on paper that I thought I got for a good price here at amazon, but ended up costing me a lot when you figure how little use I got out of it.

Dew Indicator Light.......2006-06-12

After a year and a half the dew indicator has stopped the camera from working completely. When this first started happening I had to let the camera sit open for 2 hours, I missed some pretty important events for that reason. Now--even though it has been indoors in low humidity for a month the dew light is on and the camera won't work at all. I am very dissapointed as I shouldn't have to buy another camera in such a short time. I won't buy a sharp product again.

Avoid Sharp DigiCams! Production DISCONTINUED/DEW problems.......2006-05-04

I am appalled that others have experienced the horrible DEW problem with this camera. When the temperature and humidity changes, the digicam provides a warning and shuts down. This is outlined in the user manual, but I was very disappointed that the camera would shut down for days on end. We missed great moments of our toddler and family events because of this camera, which was a fairly expensive purchase.

Upon calling 1800-BE SHARP, their customer service line, I was informed that Sharp no longer produces these digicams anyways!! Since the warranty had expired, the only service centre they could recommend is in Los Angeles whereas we live in Northern California. Our solution is to buy another, much better, non-Sharp product.

Avoid this product if you want a satisfactory/happy filming experience

Great when it works; but frustrating overall.......2006-01-31

I have had this camera for almost two years now...just after the one-year mark (when warranty expired!) it started having problems. Before then it was great. Small, nice LCD, strong zoom, easy to use, nice video. I never tried it for digital snapshots, though.

Problems started at the worst possible time...trip to Brazil half for vacation and half to document my wife philanthropic work that she is doing (and starting a nonprofit org). For no apparent reason, as we were in a drought, the "DEW" warning kept going off and not allowing any use of camera. After days of frustration, we just gave up on it.

Back in the states, weeks later the DEW problem seemed to have gone away but then the camera started eating the video-tape!!

So, I bought a new tape....and, guess, what? The "DEW" indicator goes off again -- at my kids TaeKwonDo testing for Black Belt!

Ironic how you save a couple bucks shopping around for a value product and then realize you have lost priceless memories due to poor engineering/manufacturing....I am now using our 10-year old Sony videotape camcorder...big but RELIABLE.

I'm going to try soldering the DEW problem per other review...pathetic that consumers are soldering Japanese camcorders!

update: GUESS WHAT? I called Sharp USA and complained to Tech Support and they transferred me to Customer Service who knew immediately about this issue and they told me to send it in to the repair facility and they would issue a special approval for a free repair even though i have owned it beyond the 1-year warrany period...they said they'd pay for labor & materials,..i only have to pay for shipping. I am satisfied.

I just returned from a trip to Nepal and India and found the VLZ3U to be just the ticket. It takes great video of a quality that enabled me to extract pictures of Everest and a tiger in the wild equal to most digital still cameras. The still pictures taken with the camera to the card were great for snapshots but are of too low a quality to alow much of a blow up. I did, however, take over 1500 picture that are just fine if I don't try to make them much bigger than 5x6. The "DEW" problem has cropped up 3 times in two months with no cause that I could determine as the humidity was not high at any point. I did find that I could remove the "DEW" hangup by removing the battery and immediately replacing. When I did this the "DEW" disappeared and I was able to take both still and video.

Extremely Happy.......2003-03-26

I have had mine for two years and do not have one complaint. The price was high at the time, but the Receiver has not disappointed me. It has plenty of outputs/inputs (especially) digital for a beginning to an intermediate level home theater system. I have not heard any hissing sounds. I am currenlty expanding my components and due to the 3 digitial inputs, am having no problems. The specs. say it has Pre-amp outputs, but I don't see them.

I bought mine when the receivers capable of DTS and Dolby Digital were still a new and expensive commodity. When this model came out it was a real price break through for we people on limited budgets. I have had no problems (including hiss) with mine and I really enjoy it for dvds and cd's both. I bought good cables, have some decent Infinity speakers and it will go as loud as you want. There are likely as good or better products available NOW in this price range but, at the time it came out this was an really good value for the buck.

the remote is useless in the dark...glow in the dark remote...shessh...multi function remote which only works if your eyes are 20/20 and all the lights in the room are on....

Good for some time, then broke!.......2007-04-28

I am to angry to even type anything. I called Toshiba about my defective USB ports, they told me they would send me a box to have my laptop repaired in, then they didnt send anything. I called weeks later and they tell me my warranty is up so they wouldnt send it. I told them I CALLED WHEN I STILL HAD A WARRANTY, back in december 2006. It is now April 2007 and I still have no USB cords. They keep on transferring me to Customer Relations, but I sit on hold for over an hour before I give up and hang up. That has been happening for a couple weeks now and Ive been calling daily. Then they give me these stupid case ID numbers that dont help, because I get one every time I call, so when I call again the representative reads all of them before helping me. i think, if you own a toshiba and live in America, AMERICANS SHOULD HELP YOU!! Whatver country you live in, thats where your representative should be from! I dont know when theyll get my laptop repaired, I think they give you the run around till your warranty runs up or till you get tired, then go pay a repairman by yourself

To this point I have experienced 30% downtime with this purchase. Do yourself a favor and buy something else. Toshiba customer service is useless - because it is under warranty they will repair and repair and repair - never mind that you have no computer in the meantime. In fact, I wouldn't buy a Toshiba anything due to my experiences with this laptop.

Beautiful machine - when it works.......2006-04-08

I bought this laptop for its combination of reasonable price and long list of features. Enjoyed it for six weeks before the hard drive failed. Three weeks in the shop and a new hard drive have not made it any more reliable. Still freezes up regularly during boot process. Customer support is basically useless; all they tell me is back up my data and run system recovery. Very unsatisfying.

When it works it's great...........2007-09-16

I've had this phone for a little over a year. I'll be continuing my quest for a good cordless phone soon. Right off the bat the phone's battery life was significantly shorter than others I've owned(Panasonic, Uniden, AT&T) as (I believe) the color LCD eats up plenty o' battery life. Also, it frequently drops calls. We'll be talking and the phone drops the call and displays "searching for base." If finds the base after a few seconds but the call is lost. This has nothing to do with a low battery as it occurs when there's a full charge and nothing to do with distance as we're never more than 5'-30' from the base.

Minor annoyances...

- Our #5 and #9 keys have been sticking lately and either double dialing the digit or not at all. This now requires a very slow and solid push to each button when dialing.

- When you answer the phone there is a one second delay until the call actually picks up so if you say 'hello' right away as one would normally do the caller on the other end either hears nothing or "...o" necessitating a second 'hello.'

On the plus side the range is great. I've wandered >200' from the base and still carried on a conversation. The short battery life and other failings have doomed this phone to a box in basement as a backup in the very near future.

These phone systems are touch and go. The first time I got it, my system lasted about a year. I got it brand new and just released fresh from Vtech. After a year the phone started messing up, people weren't able to hear me speak but I could hear them fine for no good reason. If I remember correctly, I got the unit the first time in either late 03 or very early 04 and had to return it in late 04. Then I struck gold on the second system which again was brand new and has lasted me until about a day ago (April 07) when now the charging mechanism and base unit have gone nuts suddenly. I'm trying a hard reset to see if it works or not. But my point is that this is a really good system for people who want to invest in them, as long as you get one that actually works. The features are super easy to use, the phone is crystal clear and unlike some cordless phones can be used easily with VoIP services. Using regular rechargeable AA batteries are superb in my book as well...no more hunting for proprietary brand batteries that are basically 2 or 3 AA batteries @ $18-$22. If my system is truly broken and I can't buy a brand new replacement, I'll probably get the ones Vtech now offers.

This phone is horrible!.......2007-04-08

The first several months with this phone was okay, and I liked that you could buy additional handsets. But after a few months, things went downhill. There would be random times when the caller would be unable to hear me, even though I could hear them just fine. I had my phone line checked, and it was fine. Then we even switched to a cable phone line, and it still happens, so I know it's the phone itself and not the service provider. Now I have buttons that aren't working. So between the non-functioning buttons and calls that blank-out, I think it's very much time to start phone shopping. I'm steering clear of Vtech!!

Great set of phones.......2006-12-26

I was so tired of finding all the phones in my teenagers room. So I bought this phone, and 4 handsets. I gave my daughter the cool color phone, the rest I told her were not allowed in her room.

It worked like a charm. The base unit has a place for extra batteries to charge, so she never runs out of juice (you have to buy the batteries to go in there). It is easily to find lost units by paging them by number. It was super easy to setup. My daughter has programmed her handset to announce, in her voice, every one of her friends that calls her (some more enthusiastically than others).

I have no problem with the sound quality, it sounds just a good as any phone I have had. It does not seem to interfere with my wireless lan. The battery life has never been an issue for anyone but the teenager (I think she forgets to put her phone on the charger), but that is mitigated by the extra batteries in the base unit. The three mail boxes provide the kids their own message center.

I would buy it again. Love it.

I have used this set, with 2 extra handsets, for well over a year. I work from home and the hands free operation using either the base station or a handset is ideal. I also use a Panasonic KX-TCA92 headset with the handset and get excellent reception and clarity both is what I say and what I hear. My house is 3 stories and the base station is in a loft bedroom. The handset works in the lowest room OK

Very good phone at a good price. My only advice is when the time comes for new rechargeable batteries only buy good quality name brands.
