Image Stabilization

Optics
The 1/4-inch CCD has 680,000 pixels for sharp and clear imaging. The 10x optical zoom is effective for most purposes, but if you need extra close shots the camcorder can zoom up to 500x digitally. For low-light situations, the camcorder can operate in slow shutter mode for slow-moving or stable objects and night lumi mode for bright objects at night.

The VL-Z5U features a 2.5-inch color LCD and a color viewfinder. The LCD monitor incorporates new CG silicon technology to achieve high luminance and definition, making viewing easy even in broad daylight. The rechargeable battery snugly clips inside the frame of the camcorder, rather than outside like most other camcorders. This makes the camera less bulky and easier to carry.
The camcorder comes with an 8 MB Secure Digital memory card, but is also compatible with MultiMedia Cards. You can easily take digital stills and import them onto a computer via the USB port. The standard IEEE1394 (Firewire) connection can be used for digital video editing, while the standard AV output terminal is used for viewing on TV or dubbing.
MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the new preferred format for personal and broadcast-quality video, highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. With up to 540 lines of horizontal resolution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 20 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

Memories lost!.......2006-09-22
We got this camera a few months ago and never used until we finally had some special occassions to record. We were able to record two and on my daughter's 8th birthday party it came up with the DEW error and we tried very hard to get it back to normal. We left the cassette door open for days and no change. Do not buy this camera, it will take away from your special occassion when you least expect it. This electronic device is not worthy. I gave it one star because there isn't a lower rating.

this camcorder is pure garbage, i purchased brand new from circuit city , only used it 4 or 5 times also , i now get the dew message, i tried everything from putting it into bags , airing it outside in dry weather, using blow dryer, using little sacks of silicia then placing the camcorder in a bag to dry it out, nothing works !!!!!
called sharp customer service got the run around. finally i have given up, this piece of electronics should never have been sold, some one needs to file a class action lawsuit given the 80+ posts i have read all detailing the same thing " identical " problems" !!!!!!
The DEW is trouble.......2005-08-23
If not for the DEW function I would give the camera five stars. Unfortunately when the DEW signal comes on there is no camera and there is no override for this sensor. We wouldn't anticipate a problem with moisture living in Arizona but it's been nothing but problems after the first year. Our first dew warning came when we tried to record our sons first preschool Christmas play - we have no video of that or several other events like birthday parties, visits from family, stunts on the trampoline... I'm counting my blessing that we're just out the cost of new camera because I have been sure my husband would land in the ER with an anger induced stroke on those occasions! The only time the DEW function seemed to go away was during the hot humid summer we spent in the Southeast. Go figure.
Great little Camera with a remote control and ease of use.........2005-06-21
I have had all the different brands of all kinds of electronics. After a review, a test and having alot of family and friends view my films nobody had any thing to say but "That Was Great". Easy to use, excellent battery location, No problems or regrets, I guess for all the cameras that were sold if only a few have negative comments thats pretty good. And I live in a rainy climate, and no "DEW" message, or any other have ever popped up. For the price, size, functions and final results. TV hook up or to computer. I give it a Thumbs Up with out hesitation.
Broke after 13 months of light use.......2005-04-25
Now it has started giving me E007 error. Google does not give any answers to this error code.
In the past it had also given me intermittant dew error.
I had it with Sharp Electronics. My first TV broke. Sharp VCR, broke. Now Sharp Camdorder, broke.
Amazon also stiffed me with the $100 promised rebate on this camcorder.
All in all, a very expensive $350 mistake :-(
I am not going to buy any more tape based camcorders.

Lack of Support for Failed Drives.......2005-12-07
Western Digital will not support your hard drive WHEN it fails. On November 16, 2004, I bought a 250GB hard drive. Three months later in February, 2005, I had to return it for a replacement due to a hard failure. Now, this replacement drive too has failed as well after only eight months.
I went through two Western Digital drives in a year due to no fault of my own and the hard drive failed just six days after the warranty expiration. I requested a replacement from Western Digital and they completely ignored me.

What can I say? I MADE A MISTAKE AND RAN THIS THROUGH THE WASHER AND THE DRYER AND AFTER IT DRIED OUT IT STILL WORKED, EVEN THE HEADPHONES. That was over a year ago; and bless its little weather-warning receiving heart (nice if you live in tornado country), it took a lickin' and kept on tickin'.

Love this walkman! I think it has great mega bass. I did not like the headphones it came with, so luckily I have another excellent set Sony Model# MDR-CD180
The battery life lasts me atleast two months. ( I only listen to my walkman about three days a week for a couple hours each use.
I have not tried a cassette tape yet.
It does also tune in to my local tv channels (2-13) pretty good.
The weather not so good, to much static. But I bought this for music, not weather reports, so I'm happy with it.

I bought this in a bricks and mortar store, and wish I had come to Amazon and read reviews on it first. Especially for this price, this was very shoddy equipment. I had the same problems as other reviewers with securing the player. I listen to books on tape while I work around the house, and I had a terrible time keeping this player attached. Unlike another reviewer, I did NOT find that it survived drops well, and it was sporting duct tape very soon after I bought it. Two months later, it simply stopped playing tapes. No amount of new batteries, manipulation, or pleading would get it going again. Very, very disappointing.

I have gone through them all and just wanted to comment how fantastic this one is. I know it is a little old now but awesome. I have had for two or three years now with 0 problems, great range, great sound quality, and the best speaker phone on a handset I have ever seen. I wish I could get an extra expansion handset but the price is too high for it and it's age.
A bad product.......2006-06-16
I have had problems with this phone since recieving it 2 weeks ago. The hand held battery provides only a few minuted of use. It has to be recharged every day. The speaker in the hand held is really bad quality. The main unit speaker phone is bad sound quality. A person cannot talk to a customer support person. ALL the various phone are computerized.
Looks better than it works.......2006-06-13
In my experience with this phone, here's what I've found:
Pros:
* Separate base (w/ speakerphone) and handset units allow you to be flexible with where you place them.
* Blue-lit display and buttons are easy on the eyes while remaining visible.
* Nice, simple, modern look and feel.
* Speakerphone on handset is very convenient.
* Optional backup battery in base allows talk time during a power outage. Comes in handy during storms.
* Handset can be set to vibrate instead of ring... useful for when the baby's sleeping, or when you have cell-phone withdrawals while at home and the cell is charging.
* Range is pretty good (but see interference caveat, below).
Cons:
* Heavy static and interference (other phone conversations, what sounds like a radio station, potential extraterrestrial communications, etc.), though not constant, are common. Using an alternate cordless phone under the same circumstances reveals the problem lies with the VTech.
* Listening to messages on the answering machine is an exercise in patience. At low volumes, the messages are difficult to hear (somewhat obviously), but turning the volume up only makes things worse. Messages sound very electronically distorted... much like a $4 radio shack walkie-talkie from the 80s. I often had to play messages 3 or 4 times to get enough info to call people back and ask them directly what their messages said.
* The call log is nearly impossible to purge... with caller ID, it keeps track of the names/numbers of the last 50 callers (whether or not they leave a message), so that when you get home from work, say, the handset will read "5 new calls." You can then scroll through the call log to see who rang you. Viewing each call listing is supposed to reset the log so that the phone doesn't report any more "new" calls. It rarely works, though, and I've often had to scroll up and down the log several times to reset it. I resolved to just let it be, but it's just annoying, is all, because whenever you look at the phone, it makes you think you missed a call.
* The thing beeps like crazy. And loudly. Every time you try to play a message back, etc., you have to wade through a symphony of beeps and then have your finger on the delete button, ready to go. If you don't hit delete while the person is still talking, the machine moves on to the next message, and you'll have to wait for it to beep all over again to get rid of the first one. Again, annoying.
Overall:
I bought this back when 5.8s were the next big thing in phones, but I think VTech released this one prematurely... without enough bug testing, and without making some of its "features" more user friendly. It has some useful innovations which made me keep it around for awhile, but the static and poor recording quality of the answering machine seemed to increase over time (despite new batteries, new locations for phone, etc.), so I've moved on from this nifty-looking model to something that actually works... and that I don't want to smash into a million beeping pieces.

I've had this phone for 6 months and the handset that came with it won't charge anymore. A new battery didn't solve the problem. A quick call to VTech for a replacement handset reveals that they don't make this phone anymore and the only option I have is to buy a completely new setup. Don't waste your money.
