Won't let me give Zero stars, so it gets 1.......2007-09-20

I had been looking for a dual-display clock radio for years when I found this one at The Sharper Image. I was thrilled! After all, they only sell high-quality things, right? Wrong. I've kept this unit for 2+ years solely because it has 2 displays and dual alarms. In that time, here are the biggest problems I've found with it:

- There is no sleep function, a standard for most clock radios.
- The clock display sometimes fails to come back after a power outage, unless you unplug the cord from the outlet, wait a few minutes and plug it back in.
- Sometimes after a power outage, the time shows up in 24-hour format rather than AM/PM, regardless of the setting of the HARDWARE switch.
- There is some level of power backup - enough to keep the time, but not the alarms. If the power goes out, both alarms reset to 8:00 AM, Buzzer, volume 20 (too loud - 12 was plenty for me). And they're both ON, even if only one (or neither) was on before the outage.
- When playing a CD, there is almost always a slight hiss from the speakers.
- Rather than a simple manually-opened cover, this has a motorized cover. Generally not a bad idea, but this one has to be opened to get to some of the controls - and it closes on what appears to be a random delay if you don't push the button to close it.
- Moving either of the display units caused cables to become loose. Reconnecting them resulted in hideous screeching and scratching noises.

Overall, this was not a unit that I would recommend to anyone, but I have had a hard time finding another one with dual displays.

The features are great but the product is crap!!!

The subwoofer produces very little bass but without it you will have absolutely none coming out of the satellite speakers. The FM and Am reception are very poor. Even with the antenna stretched out and positioned in different places the local stations come in with a lot of static. Reception was perfect while testing with an older clock radio and AM/FM Walkman. You can only see the displayed time on the clocks from a range of 2 to 4 feet. Move any further away from that and all you see is the background light. The displays have two settings of brightness which only changes the brightness of the background, not the actual display of the time. At night in a dark room the high setting of brightness is too bright and lights up the room immensely. This is OK I suppose if you plan to use it as a night light or as a reading light. The low setting makes the visibility even worse. Also, you have to view the time from head on. You can not see it from an angle. The cords supplies are conveniently long which makes it nice to route one cable from one side of the bed to another.

I bought this Bedside alarm clock while at a conference in Miami, FL. I took it back to my hotel room to test it out. My room was on the 11th floor with no obstructions on the outside. I found that the radio reception was horrible. I checked reception with the hotel provided alarm clock and found that it was pulling in the signal much stronger. I also noticed that there was a severe connection problem, known as a short, in the mini cable that connects the audio from one satellite speaker to another. However, the problem was not with the cable itself but the actual units. I replaced the cable with 3 others to be certain and the problem was the same with all. if you should move the cable even slightly while connected to the units you would hear a super loud scratchy noise. Even with the volume all the way down the noise was very, very loud. Another problem that I found was that the unit was pulling in interference known as ingress. I was able to hear a radio station other than the one that I was tuned into. Even with the unit on CD mode I could hear the radio station being broadcasted. So, you might say, "exchange it for another one!" I did and guess what?!?!?!? Same annoying problems. I unfortunately did not test the second one until I returned home to Maryland. I also had taken the new unit out of the box to pad, wrap and pack in my "carry on" luggage onto the airplane. Sharper Image supposedly keeps a record of your purchases and can access your information from any Sharper Image store in the country. I'm hoping that they can take back this junk and return my money without the box. If not, I will spread the word around regarding this product to as many people as possible and as much as possible over the internet. I plan to take this product to a Sharper Image store near my home and demonstrate the problems to the store manager.

buying this was a terrible mistake.......2004-11-06

Most of the other reviews posted are too lenient. My problems with the stereo:

It felt and looked and operated as though it were shoddily built. The wires when plugged in had to be jiggled often so that the circuits could be closed. The CD player was noisy as the disc spun; it sounded like a window fan blowing. The lights were too bright at the low setting, and the way in which they changed color was annoying. The sound quality was none too good. Setting the alarm was tedious. There was no sleep button. And worst of all, the thing stopped working completely three days ago, which was roughly two weeks after the 90-day warranty expired. I don't think I'll buy anything from Sharper Image again.

Not bad for $50 but a horrible product for retail price $199.......2004-09-15

I got this for $49.99 during a Friday Sale (the same price as the previous reviews). I was pretty excited about it and a little disappointed when I finally got it. They look very cool and sound pretty decent. My main complaint is the LCD is WAY TOO bright, even with the dimmer turned on. After a couple of nights sleeping with t-shirts over both of the clocks, I finally decided to solve the problem. I went to Pepboys and got some small static-cling window tint. I cut them to fit the display and that seemed to solve the problem without messing up the "coolness factor." I use two layers of the tint and pull them off in the morning time. This solution costs under $2, but do you really want to go to the trouble of doing this every day and night? I would definitely send them back if I had paid retail. Besides that, I like them. The alarm functions are good (Mon-Friday option and gradual increase in volume in the morning). The remote looks cool but is cheaply made and is not really that functional. The remote has no back-light and takes some getting used to. One more thing, the wiring doesn't seem to be that great. If you bump into the satellite unite at all, there is a loud distortion sound where the cable moves in the back. This is also disappointing for a $200 product from Sharper Image. This is a pretty unique unit, though. Hopefully they'll make major improvements in the next batch.

Not bad for the price.......2004-09-10

The CD sound quality is very good. However, it does appear that the radio tuner has some problems. I've noticed that I will sometimes get better sound if I tune one notch above or below the desired station (e.g. tune to 101.2 instead of 101.1)

The colored displays are brighter than I care for (even on "dim" mode.) I've settled on the orange looking color. It seems to be the dimest of them all. The last alarm clock we had, would turn the display completely off and you could wave your hand over it to show the display. That was really nice.

I do really like the gradual volume increase for the alarm. That is not a feature we had before.

One of the main reasons I bought this was that it has an AUX input I can use to hook up the TV to, which is nice.

Another nice feature is the ability to program the alarm for just Mon-Fri, Mon-Sat, or Mon-Sun. It would be even better if you could do a 5+1+1 schedule with seperate alarms for Mon-Fri, Sat and Sun.

It does not have a sleep timer, which is fine with me. I never use that feature on alarm clocks.

Another good thing to note is that the slave clock is NOT optional. Don't buy this if you're planning on just using one of the clocks. The power for the master clock is fed from the slave clock.

For $50 it probably wasn't as big of a bargin as I had hoped, but I don't feel cheated either. If I had paid more, I would return it.

Good but not durable.......2005-03-23

I bought this monitor 3 years ago for my home pc. It has a fantastic picture for the money. The only problem I have is that it just died on me the other day. Apparently I am not the only one that has had this issue with Viewsonic monitors. I have read a few reviews that state after two to three years their monitor started giving them problems. I don't know if these incidents are isolated or not, but I think I will steer clear of the Viewsonic name.

The iPal is a beautiful and well-constructed piece of equipment. It has great tonal range for the single speaker and portable form. It should have been designed with a handle though.

It gets great reception although it can be subject to electrical interference when moving about the room. I find that fine-tuning the dial usually eliminates this completely.

The dials feel great to move. I love the tuner dial with the geared indicators, it is easy to tun it just right. Very smooth with just the right amount of resistance. You don't have to worry about bumping the dials on accident.

It has a solid, quality feel to it all around.

I've not used my iPod on it. It comes with a simple stereo mini jack male-male cable so any MP3/Tape/CD player would provide input.

I would recommend Tivoli Audio iPAL to any of my friends or family.

Great product.......2007-07-30

The iPAL is simply amazing. I'd used other speakers for the ipod before, but never got this kind of sound. It's a great little package that you can carry to the garden, garage or beach, plays as loud as you want, long time between charges and again, it sounds spectacular. Totally unexpected. The design is excellent- simple, sleek and extremely functional. The tuner works well also. It's so convenient, I've stopped listening to my stereo altogether.

I am so pleased with my purchase! Not having an iPod, it's difficult finding a quality product that is universal to any brand of mp3 player. The sound is very rich and full, and is ultra portable whether you are using it with your laptop, or taking it on a camping trip. The radio has amazing range and clarity. Also, the battery life is extraordinary - it outlasts my mp3 player!

Can't afford a Bose system? Don't have an iPod but want sound as good as the gizmo that only an iPod can fit in? This is the way to go. You won't be disappointed.

Amazing Sound For Such A Little Box.......2007-07-19

My criteria for purchase was this: I wanted a small radio with a small footprint which carried the best sound possible. Large box stores and other electronic stores carried nothing. I found the Tivoli on Amazon and purchased it due to reviews only. I was not disappointed in the slightest. I appreciate simplicity and the Tivoli is incredibly simple. Three dials: 1. on/off/band, 2. volume and 3. frequency dial. Radio produces rich, deep sound for music and voice. Has FM antenna, internal rechargeable batteries, recharging cord (radio can run off standard plug also). EXCELLENT sound. I may, in fact, end up purchasing another for a different room. For the price, for the size, for the simplicity, this radio yields astounding sound!

Tivoli PAL Radio is a fine product........2007-06-28

I own five of these radios. The quality, performance, and features are exceptional. I am quite pleased. Too bad the model I own only seems to be manufactured now as a new horizontal unit. The old vertical style had slightly more utility in a small space.
