The Basics

Hard Drive: The 40 GB Enhanced IDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.
Processor: The 1.5 Ghz Pentium M processor is considered at the middle of speed range compared with other Centrino notebooks (with current speed topping out at 1.7 GHz). Because of its design, the Intel Pentium M gets more done per clock tick than a Mobile Intel Pentium 4, thus providing the discrepency in GHz measurement (i.e., 1.7 versus 3.2). The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It has a front-side bus (FSB) of 400 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache.
Memory: This notebook has 256 MB of pre-installed memory (DDR SDRAM), which is calling out for more power right out of the gate. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
CD/DVD Drive: It comes equipped with a combo DVD/CD-RW drive, which enables you to play DVD-ROM discs and DVD movies as well as burn data and record music to CD discs. The CD-RW drive has 16x write, 10x rewrite, and 40x read speeds. The DVD-ROM has an 8x playback speed.
Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook is outfitted with a standard 85-key keboard with 12 function keys and a two-button touchpad.

Sound and Graphics
The installed NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 video card has a 32 MB dedicated video memory. The 14.1-inch TFT active matrix display supports up to 16 million colors and has 1024 x 768 and 1400 x 1050 resolution modes. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This Tecra M2 model has an integrated 802.11g (or 54g) wireless LAN, which is quickly becoming the most popular wireless standard and is compatible with 802.11b connections as well. It also features Toshiba's SlimSelect bay that enables you to use an optional hot-swappable device, such as a second battery or another optical drive. Other external connectivity options include:

Preloaded System and Software
The Tecra M2-310 notebook comes with the Windows XP Professional operating system (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features), and it features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software titles include Adobe Acrobat Reader and Norton AntiVirus.

A great computer! Lightweight and well made. This is my second Toshiba laptop. Perhaps what I like most about the Tecra M2V is that rather than a bunch of buttons, bells and whistles, Toshiba has focused on making this lightweight and reponsive to the businessman/woman or serious student. I wrote my doctoral dissertation on it, using the docking station to hook up to a large monitor and standard keyboard after coming home from the university every day. Never let me down. Hint: buy the large double capacity battery in addition to the battery included.

This does not even deserve one star.We got this scanner as a gift and what a piece of junk. We have tried on 4 different computers including windows 98, NT,and XP. After the first 2 scans, it says it is locked even after installing the newest drivers. Visioneer sent new software. That did not help. The offered me a new one, but only if I paid to ship the old one to them. I couldn't return it to the store because I had it past the return date. It is now going in the trash because it would not be worth the money to send them the scanner just to get another piece of crap back in the mail. Do not buy this scanner. You will just muck up your computer with software and have to return it. Worst scanner ever!!!

Worst Item Ever Purchased.......2004-10-15

I owned a 5820 it did not work out of the box. The "support" at website consists of several broken links. Their "SARA" system points you to more broken links, then asks "was this helpful?" I tried "fixes" on the web including uninstalling completely, then replacing 5820 drivers with 5800 drivers, and opening the scanner and manually moving the drive belt(!). Some people claim these work but nothing worked for me. The scanner says it's "locked" but it HAS NO LOCK - it simply does not work no matter what you do with it. Stay away from this scanner, don't even accept one as a gift, it's not worth the aggravation.

Visioneer's 5820USB is an absolute piece of junk!...or any other 4-letter word you might insert. From day 1 it asked you to "unlock" the scanner. Even after Visioneer sent a new CD, with supposedly different drivers on it, it said the same thing. Visioneer either can't or won't resolve the problem. $10 would be way too much to spend on this item!! Read reviews on other websites. They will confirm this review. Amazon should avoid this scanner for their own reputation's sake.

terrific LITTLE pda.......2001-08-23

For the size of this PDA it is jam packed! I have read all of these reviews and decided some of the reviewers did not spent enough time and patience with it. I could tell you what each of their problems were. You must also realize that REX is small. If you cant read small print, you wont like it. I have had my 6000 since its introduction almost a year ago. I was one of the first to get mine. I love it dearly and use it daily. I was a previous REX user and find the 6000 the best! If you have trouble with the software there is a solution, because all the other dedicated REXers have made it work. Also note there ARE "addins" available, just not through the manufacturer. There is a whole world of REXers out there. There are many wonderful REX-writing people who have made everything from scientific calculator to tetris game (solitaire and others of course) to expense manager and even a program to write little REX emails on it! These writer gurus are amazing and most addins are available for free download. For the size of the REX, you get a lot. I can not think of anything more I would want it to do! I certainly did not want to tote the large Palm around. REX is the size of a credit card and does almost as much... I am in the process of finding a second just in case anything ever happens to mine!

Great PDA, inadequate bundled PIM.......2001-06-03

Time magazine's "PDAs on a diet" compared the Vista and Rex PDAs. I read the review and quickly changed from the Vista to the Rex 6000. The Rex was like a breath of fresh air, especially when I had to reschedule alarms. The bundled PIM, unfortunately, is more primitive than the Vista's PIM, since the latter allowed drag-and-drop rescheduling and sorting of memo entries by any displayed categories. Guess I'll have to invest in MS Outlook for a flexible PIM. Thanx.

It downloads news and other information from the internet.

It has an awesome touchscreen.

Synchronization is fullproof and easy! You can even set it to tell you whenever it's about to overwrite or change something! This eliminates all synch errors. I synch with Outlook 2000, and it did everything to perfection.

This thing can do EVERYTHING my palm can do, but is less cumbersome than the palm.

This is by far, the greatest personal information manager ever.

Incompatibility Problems. Not recommended........2001-04-24

Just got my new Rex 6000 and I'm outraged. As a loyal Rex Pro owner who wanted to upgrade to the touchscreen model, I feel I have been left out high & dry, as will the majority who attempt this transition. The PIM included with the Rex 6000 is not compatible with the Starfish TrueSync software of the older models, which makes very difficult to use existing card files, memos and other data. In essence, you have to start over again and rewrite all your files, unless you want to try a complicated import/export operation through MS Outlook in order to transfer existing data from the TrueSync desktop to the new Rex 6000 desktop and device. But that's not the worse. As it turns out, the PIM included with the Rex 6000 is far more primitive, user unfriendly, unintuitive and complicated than the Starfish. I would never buy it on a stand-alone basis. It's lousy.

This incompatibility took me completely by surprise, as the Rex 6000 literature and advertisements certainly don't go out of the way to warn owners of the older models of the problem. Now that it is too late, and after re-reading the Rex 6000 specs, I can see that mention is made of a PIM included with the Rex 6000 that is different from the TrueSync of the older models. But it is unreasonable to expect people to assume that the software will be totally incompatible. It would be as if a Palm or Visor owner found out after buying the latest model that his existing software, operating system and files do not work with the new model, or could not be easily updated. You expect some continuity in a product line, unless you are clearly warned to the contrary. Not recommended.

Nice screen, but poor synchronization options.......2001-04-20

I have recently purchased both the 5001 and the 6000 series REX, and found the 5001 to be more flexible in its synching options, and less delicate.

I use my REX primarily as an address book, to do list and notes. Input is not a big issue for me, nor is Web content downloads.

The 5001 uses the Starfish TrueSync technology to synch with any number of devices, including cell phones, Yahoo and Palm Desktop. I actually synch mine with both Palm Desktop and Yahoo simultaneously so that I have access to my addresses over the Internet.

The 6000 does not support TrueSync, limiting my synchronization options to be only Outlook, and the bundled desktop application. The 6000 also seems to be more delicate with both the screen and the buttons.
