Qtec 9100 Pocket PC Camera phone - HTC WIZARD K-JAM.......2006-11-02
I bought this phone for about two months now and I have never yet experience any malfunction about the phone.Honestly speaking this phone if is well taken care of it won't give you any problem, this is an electronic device remember if you ever drop it even once it might get some malfunction.I use my phone everyday and the battery life lasts just like the manufacturer states in the instruction book.
The 1.3 Megapixel camera takes good pictures. If you want better picture please buy Digital camera with 6/7 Megapixel, don't expect this phone camera to give you the same picture quality.
MEMORY- It comes with 47.46MB and personally i think its good enough.I did buy 2GB mini SD card to store all my videos, music, photos etc.Store all your staffs in a Storage card (mini SD).Leave internal memory for appointments, pocket word, pocket excel, contacts etc, they wont make the memory full that easy.Lesss internal memory you have the slower the phone will get.
PROCESSING SPEED- It boots like a normal PC atleast a minute or two and you good to go after that. This is not a regular phone, remember its a Pocket PC.
PHONE- Bluetooth works amazing (logitec)very crystal clear sound.Speaker phone works very well.
QWERTY Keyboard is very easy to use and perfectly designed.
Overall: I'm very happy with this pocket PC phone
*** EDITED*** under your own risk.......2006-10-13
I posted this review, however I have edited, read the last paragraph.
first of all, this is a wonderful device (IF IT WORKS), before buying my 9100 I read all the reviews I found here and other sites, and comparing the features, design and price it was really good deal, I got my device and of course the only down point is the microsoft software but everything else was perfect, I could say I agree with all the good things the reviews say, until the day my phone didn't charge... I took off the battery, memory, simcard reset the phone and stay about 2 days trying to figure out why, and finally by magic it charged again, however this happened again, and the second time I couldn't get the phone charge at all, I looked for faqs on the internet and I found a few forums of people having the same problem, as amazon doesn't allow to post urls here make a search in google of this "qtek doesnt charge" find the forums and see by yourself. Now I have a headache having to return the device and deal with the manufacturer to get a new one.
buying doubtful brands is a risk, if you are lucky and you get a good one, enjoy, but I have learned the lesson, I rather spend some more money and buy a good brand like hp sony ericsson or something like that, you hardly see bad reviews about malfunctioning devices on these brands. is a pity that such a good brands don't have phones with all the features that customers need like the 9100.
***EDITED***
after some investigation, trial and error, and having some comments from other people I found that like some Motorola models you should never let the battery drain completely, if you do so, you will run into troubles, I did this experiment and drained the battery completely, and I took two days to get my phone charging again. the device works excellent just be careful and never let your battery drain completely.
I hope this is useful.
good luck!
Love Hate Relationship.......2006-07-11
Okay, I've had this QTEK for about 3-4 months now (I first purchased it in Europe), and it's been an up and down relationship for me. Either I love it (when it is working well), or I hate it (when it's being quirky).
One thing to point out that are important:
- I originally had an older ROM/firmware (version 1.something).
- I since have upgraded to version 2.something.
Love:
Size: A great size for how many features it has. It fits easily in my pocket (suit jacket or pants) and isn't too heavy to make a very noticable bulge or be uncomfortable. I have a mate who has the larger QTEK, and it's just not easy to pocket.
Wireless: I love it! I can browse at airports, hotspots, etc. and get mails, search the web, etc. The landscape mode is perfect for this (although the portrait also works fine). I've had no problems connecting to any wireless networks.
Keyboard: I can type using my thumbs very fast. The device doesn't rest flat, but it hasn't been a problem for me.
Media Player: WMP works well, the sound quality is very good. I've had a Zen Micro and a SanDisk, and I think it's better than both in terms of sound quality and volume (much louder).
Camera: Not bad, not great, but overall for a phone cam it takes great photos and reasonable video. No complaints.
MiniSD Memory: I bought a GIG, and can store heaps on it. The file structure allows you to easily switch between the storage card and the on-board memory, which is nice.
Phone quality: Very good, normally (when working; see "Hate" section below).
Windows O/S: Makes it very easy to find third-party software, download and install using ActiveSync/USB connection. It's also familiar to navigate.
Other: Flight Mode (is great for frequent travleers like me, letting me use it as an MP3 player and have an "all-in-one" device"; lots of software (I've used Skype via wireless for example, basically letting me talk for free - a bit slow and jumpy, but usable) available; pocket word and excel work well, and I've used this on short trips as my only computer (where I mostly use email and some small emergency document reviewing); reasonable battery life.
Hates:
It's quirky. For example:
1) The alarm will start as it's supposed to, but I can't turn it off. The only way to turn it off is to mute the phone, or the alarm will just randomly chirp at different times. This happens even after the firmware upgrade.
2) The alignment *constantly* goes out of whack. This can be *very* annoying if it goes so far out of what you can't use the stylis to use the on-screen realignment tool. There are as many as 5 times per day I had to re-align the screen. This has gone down to about 1 time with the new firmware.
3) With the old firmware, in about every 1 in 5 calls (randomly) I made the recipient couldn't hear me. No idea why. I had to call back many times. Sometimes it would just get "stuck" doing this and I couldn't talk to that particular person (but it would work fine if I called a different person). The people were random (it would work fine one day with one person, but not the next day, etc.). This has only happened once with the new firmware.
4) With the old firmware, the phone would just randomly "ring"... and not stop ringing. Nobody was calling, it would just decide to ring. It happened once on a plance (when flight mode was on), and people gave me nasty looks - even though nobody was really calling. I had to embarrasingly explain it. This hasn't happened since the upgrade, but before the upgrade it would do it about twice a day. It was not related to the alarm... I checked. I do have a friend who has one, and this had never happened to his. Until recently, when his just started doing it. Weird.
With the old firmware, you can't easily turn off the GPRS; mine has no setting for it. The new firmware does.
The stylus: Worked great until somehow the hole that it fits into "expanded" with no rhyme or reason. I thought maybe I did something to my first stylus, so I tried the second spare that the phone came with. Nope; it just falls right out. So now I can't use them, because they don't fit in the stlus hole. They just slide right on out and fall on the floor, pocket, train, etc. Now I use whatever is pointy and handy. Usually a pen.
So, I highly recommend you upgrade your firmware; but not all problems went away. This thing is so cool when it works... but so very frustrating when it's acting up. By the way, it's pretty durable. I dropped it into the Rhone river by accident. After about 10 minutes, I got up the courage to go in after it (the water was cold, this was about 2 months ago). Water was soaked through-and-through the thing, and it wouldn't dry out after about a week. There was nothing else to do but microwave it... (by the way, all these quirks were BEFORE I microwaved it). Anyway, the microwaving worked like a champion (in small doses), and it works again better than ever.
Excellent Phone overall but ActiveSync Software a letdown.......2006-07-10
I have had my phone for just over a week now and I am very happy with it. I moved from a nokia 6680 as i wanted a phone i could write programs for as I am a software developer and systems administrator. So far it has seamless integration with Visual Studio 2005 bar the need to install .net compact framework inorder to deploy my applications.
The best features about this phone are the following:
1. Windows OS makes it easy for me to write applications.
2. The camera takes excellent pictures.
3. The speaker is loud and clear even in the car.
4. The battery life is excellent (i have not charged my phone since i have had it... mainly because it is connected to my pc most of the time and charges from usb).
5. I just love the terminal services client as it gives me the ability to administrate my network remotely.
6. I am impressed with the excellent buid quality of this device and the contents of the package (especially the handy carry case).
The worst features are:
1. I havent figured out the keyboard yet but i am sure it is easy one i read the instructions.
2. The ActiveSync software is a real let down. You would think that Microsoft would make the Sync software more feature rich as they created the OS. I mean when compared to Nokia's PC Suit and Samsungs Sync software, both of which i am very familiar with the ActiveSync Software lacks basic features of these software packages.
Overall a good value for money package if you can afford it. I-mate have won a loyal customer!
The perfect device for the road warrior!.......2006-01-31
After finding myself carrying nearly a kilo of cords and cradles to go with my mobile phone, mp3 player, digital camera, and PDA I am glad to say, I can now dispense with nearly all of them as this is the device for the road warrior! And may I say, it has a very high WOW factor when produced...
BATTERY - The stated battery life is about 200 hours - which would assume you only turn on the device and don't use it at all for a week... It also states the talk time on the phone is about 3 hours. I have talked for up to 2 hours on the phone, but it does drain the battery. On average, this device is so useful and does so much, that there is no way you are going to let it sit for a week waiting for phone calls to come in. The most I have gone is 2 days without having to recharge it. If I was using Bluetooth and Wi-fi extensively, I suspect it would have to be charged every day. I have read elsewhere that battery life improves after you've 'drained' it a few times but I'm having problems letting it run down to that point!
CAMERA - Takes OK pictures in daylight and crap pictures at night - despite its built in `flash' (read - flashlight...). No zoom capability. But handy for spur of the moment pics and video. Will not be replacing my high-end digital camera though... Very easy to transfer images to computer via USB cable.
CONNECTION - Yay! No cradle - connects with only a USB cable to your computer - and the battery can also be charged via this method so if traveling with my computer, I only need one cable - magic!
DATA ENTRY - The slide out keyboard is great, but I found the keys slightly widely spaced when trying to use the soft keys. The device does not lie flat when keyboard open so can't type with anything but thumbs. However, the handwriting recognition software is vastly improved on a couple of years ago and I find myself using that a lot...
MEMORY - When the battery gets very low, the device automatically turns itself off and will not turn back on until you give it a power boost. Further more, I have done a couple of hard resets and not lost information so it looks like it does save the information. You can also install all programs to the mini-SD card, which is a major advantage to not losing information
MP3 - Yes it does work! It has Windows Media Player (mobile) installed and in the interests of seeing how this device stacks up against other mp3 players out there (which as far as I can tell, all seem to die between 6 and 8 hours), I got a respectable 9 hours - but I used no other application on the device. However, the headphones that come with it are a ear buds with a mini-jack - and hurt after a short period of use. Furthermore, they kept slipping out of my ears... I have yet to find an adaptor between ordinary headphone and the mini-jack
PROCESSING SPEED - People have made an issue of this. I only found it to be slow when booting up, otherwise it seemed to chug along fine to me
PHONE - Crystal clear sound! Incredible sound! Very impressive! I have not invested in a Bluetooth headset, so can say that putting the phone to the head does cause all sorts of menu's to be activated by your ear, so it can painful closing down all the screens and programs when you suddenly find yourself needing the keypad to enter passwords etc... Thank goodness the speaker phone is very clear!
SCREEN - Excellent quality - pictures look magical on it and with Windows Media Player, the video is sensational. You have the ability to switch between portrait and landscape - so watching those wide-screen movies is not a problem. It's a bit fiddly switching between landscape and portrait and I often found for viewing of still photo's it was quicker to slide open the keyboard which automatically flips the screen image to landscape
SOFTWARE - says it comes with PDF clearvue and Skype - I did not find either on the device or on the accompanying CD. I have downloaded Skype for PocketPC but not installed it at this time. Otherwise all other software works to spec, with no bothersome lag times detected.
SIZE & WEIGHT - perfect! Its amazing how such a little device can provide so much satisfaction. Its about the same size as some of the cheaper `pre-paid' phones on the market - but oh does it do so much more...
SOUND - High quality sound in headphones, but a but tinny (yet clear) through the speakers
STORAGE - I can't believe with all the advances in hard drive space, it has only 64Mb storage! So buying a mini-SD card, which are currently only available to 1Gb is essential.
VOICE RECONGITION - although I can add voice tags to contacts, I didn't seem to be able to add them to programs as was indicated in the instruction book.
WI-FI - connected and surfed quite happily for an hour. You need to read the instructions as where to locate networks has moved since earlier versions of PocketPC software, but fine once path established. Nice to switch to landscape mode when surfing...

Product Description
If an easy to use, high quality 35mm camera is the gift of choice, look no further than the new Yashica T4 Zoom. This camera is being brought back by popular demand, and now features a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T 28-70mm Zoom Lens f/4.5-8, which provides superior image quality. The T4 Zoom offers a multi-auto focus system, 5-mode auto flash with red-eye reduction, a built-in date back, and a built-in diopter adjustment. Sporting a matte graphite finish, this camera offers one-touch mode selectors for exposure compensation, infinity lock, and long time exposures. The T4 Zoom is compact and lightweight, weighing just 6.7 ounces and is remote control capable.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Shooter.......2006-07-13
The Kyocera / Yashica T4 Zoom is a well-made, handsome and very compact zoom film camera. The lens has above-average sharpness and photos taken with this camera show little or no vignetting, a problem typical of these cameras. The camera is very easy to use and, although its small size makes for tiny controls, it's not hard to use. Color saturation is very good and contrast isn't bad, but photos may be overall a bit dark because of the slow lens speeds. My only complaint is that, at wide-angle settings, the flash isn't very powerful, but it's acceptable at close-up range. This camera probably won't take photos that are as sharp as those taken by a single focal length camera (like the Olympus Stylus Epic with an f2.8 lens -- sharper than the original T4? Maybe!), but for a zoom camera it produces quality results.
Overpriced and underwhelmed.......2005-03-29
Bought this camera a few months back and retunred it after a few rolls. Indoor pics are horrible compared to my old Pentax PS, and the camera is uncomfortable to operate. Why on earth did the put a viewfinder on the edge? Don't waste your money on this camera. Go with Pentax or Olympus for PS cameras.
very happy.......2005-03-26
I've been very happy. I've had the weatherproof version of this camera without the zoom kit since about 1996. Basic rules of photography aside (lighting, composition, etc...), it has consistently taken some excellent pictures and has held up to a lot of abuse: hiking, sailing, snowboarding, kayaking (though it's never been submerged). I got a digital camera but still take my T4 on all my trips. It still works great. The super-viewfinder and timer setting (along with a pocket tripod) also comes in handy depending on the situation. I only gave it 4 stars because sometimes I wished I had a zoom, but I suppose there should be 5 stars now that it comes with a zoom kit.
May be the best Zoom P/S Camera in its class.......2004-11-04
I am a fan of the Yashica T4 Super, which featured a fixed focal length 35mm f3.5 Carl Zeiss Tessar lens. I still own this superb little gem of a camera since it takes pictures whose quality I can't readily discern from other, more expensive cameras I use, most notably the Contax G2 autofocus rangefinder camera and Carl Zeiss lenses, and the manual focusing Leica M6 with an assortment of Leica M lenses. Kyocera has updated the Yashica T4 into a phenomenal zoom P/S (Point and Shoot) 35mm camera which I wouldn't hesitate to bring along if I wanted to carry one light camera. The new Zeiss lens is superb, though it may lack a little of the Tessar's sharpness (I'm not sure why the lens is designated a Vario Tessar as opposed to a Vario Sonnar, which would make more sense, but I will leave this aside to those more familiar with Carl Zeiss lens lore.). I have seen superb 8 x 10" color enlargements made from this camera that have excellent contrast and resolution. If you are looking for a first-rate, yet relatively inexpensive zoom P/S 35mm camera, then the Yashica T4 Zoom has to be your first choice.
Best point and shoot for under $200!.......2004-10-01
Basically I was looking for the highest quality camera for under $200. I previously had the Canon Sureshot Classic 120 but was lost and now is discontinued. Some of you may know that the Classic was a great, solid PAS (point and shoot).
Pro's: Carl Zeiss lens! Solid aluminum body construction. Clean lines. Doesn't feel cheap. Comes with case and remote (T4 Zoom Kit)
Cons: Viewfinder seems a tad small. A slight shutter delay, takes getting used to. The zoom is 4 stages, you can't make zoom adjustements in between.
Overall: I'd suggest this to anyone who wishes to get a great PAS and doesn't want to lug around a 35mm SLR.
