Wow, these are a waste!.......2007-03-13

I bought two of the 30 packs of Verbatim Lightscribe CDRs from Best Buy. I would be very optimistic in saying that 1 out of 3 actually worked. Oh, the music burns on to them no problem, but when I flip them over to do the lightscribe label, it tells me the media is not recognized as lightscribe. This happens no matter what program I use! And what sucks even worse is that with the coating on the cd, it's almost impossible to write on, so you end up with an un-labeled cd anyways.

Oh well, back to the HP discs :)

This item works fairly well-seems like the print doesn't show up as good as it should but it could be I haven't perfected how to use the lightscribe program well enough yet. The music downloaded on them sounds great.

Worst Media Ever -- Made by CMC Magnetics!.......2007-01-13

These Verbatim discs are hands down the very WORST blank media I've EVER encountered! They're made by CMC Magnetics -- well known as the worst media manufacturer in the world. But not only are they CMC Magnetics, they're the worst of the worst of CMC Magnetics!

The latest KProbe *hangs* when faced with these, forcing a hard reset. The latest Nero Burning ROM *hangs* when faced with these, forcing a hard reset. The program continues, non-stop, to display "waiting for media" when I use these, and an attempt to abort hangs Windows XP SP2 the same way it hangs Kprobe.

Curiously, the media IDs on these are exactly the same as that on Philips LightScribe CD-R media (they're made by CMC Magnetics as well). However, at least the Philips are recognized by all my software and hardware, quite unlike the Verbatims. That's why I say that these Verbatim are the worst of the worst from CMC Magnetics. (The Philips are no prize, either, but they perform minimally well).

The *ONLY* thing that worked with these media are the LightScribe labeling. But what's the point of labeling discs you can't even RECOGNIZE, let alone burn?

I had the exact same problems with these media in both my Lite-On LH-201AH burner and my NEC ND-2510A burner (the latter is universally recognized as and ideal burner for even low-quality media).

Note that Verbatim had a great reputation when they sold media manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. But, stupidly, they chose to go ultra-cheap and turned to the dreaded CMC Magnetics Corp. Thus, they lost all credibility!

*AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAGUE!*

We got a new computer that uses the LightScribe technology to burn labels or pictures onto your cd's and dvd's! I used it to burn my husbands mom and dad's photo onto a dvd of old home photos! His parents both died 4 months apart when he was 10 years old back in 1964 so this to him was very special!!

I like the LightScribe concept - no sticking on lables that eventually start to come off. I have used 3 of these Verbatim LightScribe DVD's and the details that were burnt onto the DVD's were sharp, but it was a little hard to see as the DVD itself has a flat, dusty-gold color which doesn't contrast well with the grayscale designs that get burnt on. So, though the designs are sharp, they don't pop out at you. This would work much better on a lighter colored CD.

If you are looking for organization on your office, or your home desk this dvd's will work fine, but you have to get a lot patience making them it takes about 40 minutes making a Dvd labeling with lightscribe. =)

Best Lightscribe discs available.......2007-05-21

I've burned nearly 60 of these and never had a single problem. The images are dark, *much* better than the HP equivalents. The HP discs I've used had faint images (which is funny since it's their technology!) and about 1 out of every 4 HP had a bad data side.
I can't say enough good things about the Verbatims... buy these and save yourself some headaches!

If you're one of the growing legions of multimedia hobbyists who use their home PC to process, edit, store and assemble their digital photo, digital video or digital music collections, the HP Pavilion a820n might be just what you need. Powerful where you need it to be and sporting intuitive features and software that help make challenging chores easy, the Pavilion a820n is most notable for its double-layer DVD burner that not only makes quick work of custom video DVDs and data backups but also features an innovative laser labeling system that allows you to etch labels and titles directly onto the surface of your discs. Though its graphics subsystem isn't powerful enough for buttery smooth frame rates in ultra-high-end 3D games, the Pavilion a820n is otherwise fast and versatile and ready for the vast majority of home, home office and business applications.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Pavilion a820n, HP has turned to Intel and its new Pentium 4 540J CPU. This is a recently upgraded version of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a speedy 3.2 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a high-end CPU that will blaze through virtually anything. It does, however, follow the tried and true 32-bit CPU architecture of previous Pentiums rather than the substantially faster 64-bit architecture just being introduced in a small number of today's priciest, most advanced CPUs. That shouldn't be a serious detraction for most people, as only a few applications are ready to take advantage of 64-bit processing.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Pavilion a820n features 512 GB of fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM main memory, a typical allotment for today's midlevel and high-end PCs and certainly enough for most multitasking situations. Moreover, the system will accept later RAM upgrades to a stunning total of 4 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). Generally, graphics controllers that incorporate their own dedicated built-in memory are more powerful and more desirable (but definitely more expensive too) than graphics controllers that share the system's main memory. The Pavilion a820n strives to offer the best of both worlds by utilizing an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 graphics chipset with 128 MB of shared video memory. This is a new breed of graphics controller that's comparatively economical because it shares a computer's main memory rather than supplying its own dedicated memory, but is a decent performer too because it appropriates so much of it (in this case, 128 MB). Ultimately, the Pavilion a820n is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D and many 3D apps, but isn't quite ready for serious gamers who want to play the latest and most demanding 3D titles at the highest possible resolution and the smoothest possible frame rates. Those users will need to upgrade to a video card with 256 or 512 MB of dedicated video memory.

A display screen is not included, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Pavilion a820n produces sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct channels and one subwoofer. Thusly, you'll hear the latest movies and games in all their surround sound glory.

Hard Drive
At 200 GB, the internal hard drive offers enough room for a massive allotment of files and applications and ample music, video/photo and multimedia libraries too.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features two optical drives -- a CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a state-of-the-art Double Layer DVD+R/RW drive through which you can burn music and data CDs, play DVD movies, and record home videos to long-lasting DVD media. Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports -- three of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. HP has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 9-in-1 front panel card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections.

Operating System and Software
The Pavilion a820n incorporates a comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. HP will also pre-install Microsoft's new Works 8.0 productivity suite, two finance packages (Microsoft's Money Standard 2005 and Quicken 2005 New User Edition), and a thorough collection of top-notch digital photo, music and imaging utilities.

I own the Pavilion a820n, I've had it for about a year and I haven't experienced any problems. It handles anything I want to do but does seem to struggle a bit (but still bearable) for the latest high-end games... nothing a 1gb memory stick wouldn't fix. (I play gun, gta san andreas, doom 3, dreamfall longest journey, tomb raider, and more just fine). The case is easy to open for cleaning. It is a bit heavy if you plan on lugging it around. Having the card reader, USB, and firewire up front has been incredible. The computer works great with my 320gig external. I highly recommend this computer for its price range!

That's a QUOTE from one tech about this junkpile I bought last January! 2 months after my factory warehouse purchase, the motherboard failed--and a 2nd an HP tech brought to fix it in my home, so they had to install in another at their repair center--that's THREE motherboards in TWO months ownership!!

From then on I was calling tech support nearly every other day about other problems; when once told to open the case, I saw the rear cooling fan's wires hadn't even been reconnected after another time at HP's repair center. They brought it back saying they'd also replaced a bad hard drive--failed at HPs place. (I wasn't reinstalling my own software programs since I feared what would fail next). 2 weeks later SMOKE came from the back; turned it off & found some burned CPU connectors! Now it was a LITERAL FIRE HAZARD -- ENOUGH'S ENOUGH!!

After 5 months with this wreck, HP still pled to let them fix it again, so I finally read them the replacement warranty terms from their own manual. They reluctantly replaced it with one of their high-end models, which hasn't given even a "sneeze" in my 7 months with it(hooray here!) --
BUT STAY AWAY FROM THIS A820n LEMON!

Price-wise, you can't beat Zenith's DVD2200 DVD-Video player. By today's standard, it's a basic model, with a single digital-audio output and no built-in Dolby Digital decoder. However, the DVD2200's price is amazing when compared to the first generation of DVD players.

This model is compatible with both Dolby Digital and Digital Theater Sound (DTS) formats. Using the coaxial digital-audio output, you can connect the DVD2200 to a preamp or AV receiver with DTS and/or Dolby Digital processing and enjoy surround-sound movies in either format. That's a big plus, especially as more DVD titles are released in DTS. The DVD2200 has a 10-bit digital-to-analog video decoder, as opposed to the 8-bit models that were common when the DVD format was first introduced. It also incorporates a 24-bit, 96 kHz audio D/A converter, which translates into higher-quality sound--particularly when using the DVD2200 as a CD player. Zenith supplies a full-function remote control that lets you enlarge images to either four or 16 times their normal size--a great feature for zooming in on credits at the end of a movie. Additional features include a single S-Video output, an intuitive onscreen menu, parental control, and 3D Virtual Surround.

This is a GREAT unit.... but units made before MAY 2000 may have a bad "firmware chip-set" which MUST be replaced (Zenith will do this for free! if you INSIST on it) So if your unit has problems with the Matrix DVD, you've got the OLD chip-set. Note that the manufacture date is on the OUTSIDE of the box... so insist on one made in or after MAY 2000.

The NEW units are super units.... they've played every DVD I've put in... and the price is right... CC has them for 179 also. They only drawback is the lack of Component Video and an Optical Digital output.... but these aren't big problems at all.

Easy to use features... great picture, great audio, cheap price.

Okay - until The Abyss.......2000-06-20

I received this DVD Player as a Christmas gift & I was so excited to use it. I watched numerous DVD's & was just so happy until...The Abyss came out on DVD. It is my one of my favorite movies & I couldn't wait to watch it on DVD. But alas, it would not play. I actually thought it was the DVD & took it back to the store. Then I tried the new DVD - same thing. I called Circuit City. They told me it would need an upgrade & that they would send it back to the manufacturer FREE OF CHARGE. Well wasn't that nice of them to offer. Seeing that it was a manufacturer defect and all. So now I have to send it back. I haven't done it yet - but will do it this week. But I really didn't want to go through the unhooking & re-hooking of my system.

Avoid this product.

Could be Better.......2000-06-14

This DVD Player is a descent Player for the money, However it does have several drawbacks. 1> Any DVD that has any sort of multitrack contiguous playback will not play either at all or it will skip all over the place. (Some movies with this problem are The Matrix, The Abyss, Alien, and several others that have multiple editions coinciding together). There is no statement on the DVD movie itself to warn you of this problem. Be warned that most retail sales store will NOT take back any movies for this problem, if they are open. 2> DVD Player has no optical output (Minor problem, if you are looking for the top of the line)

This DVD is nice! I read reviews before I bought this product, yet I took a chance. It was worth it! Bottom line... I rented DVD's from Blockbuster and one was sort of dirty. I had to use my cleaner wipes and it was brand new. Some folks don't know how to handle discs, that's the only time it paused! I like it!

Has defect, but can be fixed........2000-05-15

When I first got my DVD player. I could not play any of the dual layered disk wiht out some sort of problem. But i called them and they told me send it back to have it upgraded. Since I got it back it has played relatively fine. 1 star for product quality. and 4 stars for customer service.
