Don't think of the airpanel as a computer; it's a wireless accessory for your existing PC that you can write on and that provides access to all your files, applications, and settings. The design is chunky but easy to hold, with rounded corners and a clear, bright screen. Two USB ports on the top accept a mouse and keyboard, but since the airpanel is a touch screen, you probably won't need them.

In our tests of the airpanel, we found that the stylus was small but had a nice balance. The four-way cursor control was a little slow, but at least we didn't jostle the cursor accidentally; and the left and right mouse buttons were useful with the pen too. For text entry, we typed and wrote into an input panel. We tapped and dragged onscreen to control Windows itself; in fact, we could see our PC's desktop on the airpanel as if we were sitting in front of the PC screen, but without desktop wallpaper.

The 10.4-inch screen looked small initially, but when we held it in our hands or rested it on our lap, it didn't feel cramped; and it was small and light enough to carry easily from room to room. Without the usual PC components like a hard drive, CD-ROM, and so on, the Airpanel didn't get too warm to hold either.

This thing is really just a big oll remote for all of your computers! Thank god! hah

It appears that some people have this confused as a full blown tablet PC. Well it isn't. It is as one of the users put it just a terminal interface that uses the remote connection built into winXP

The main target for this device I would think should be people who are interested in a Home theater PC. Well actually a remote for their HTPC. With the Mplus software that comes installed on the newer Air panels (http://www.mplusint.com/) you can do quiet a bit with this thing.

Might also be handy for the kitchen looking up recipes and stuff. Then again I GUESS you could just print it!

This device isn't for my mom it isn't for my friend who casually uses a PC. This device is for me who has several PC's and an extensive HTPC setup. For 400$ this thing is pretty slick. I would like it to be at around 300$ after all is said and done.

To the person who recommened the Envision EN-5200e 15" LCD Monitor instead of the ViewSonic Airpanel V110 10" Smart Display...I hate to tell you this but they are totally different kinds of monitors. The Envision is just a monitor period. I have a 15" Rad LCD monitor which I like fairly well...if on a site to long the numbers and letters imprint in the screen forever lol. But the ViewSonic "Smart Display" is a monitor that you install wireless and then can use at the desk or you can take it to the living room, bedroom, outside or wherever and continue to use as if you were at your desk. I don't mean to sound bossy or know-it-all, but they really are two different birds! Thanks for listening.
P.S. That's why there is a big price difference too. :o)

A little too heavy for my taste, but I like the versatility and robustness of the Air Panel. Great display! Really pleasant to read on and nicely built. Of course price is high on this, but just wait a few months and it'll come down quick.

Why?.......2003-03-07

In an age of sub-500 dollar laptops... why would you want one of these "appliances" (read: Novelty Item) at the current price-point...? I have a wireless network set up in my home and connect with two desktops, two laptops, a print server, and a HP Pocket PC. All of the drives are shared, every device can hit on the print server, and all devices can be used simultaneously. In the case of the laptops and the Pocket PC, they can be used anywhere on my property and even will roam across the street. I have one PC laptop that stays at home and a Powerbook that travels with me. When I go to work, I roam right into another wireless network and again share all of my resources. The difference is that when I am sitting in the airport or a hotel room, I can actually pull out my laptop and work. Back to the original question: Why would you want to spend [so much] on a dumb terminal when you can have a full-blown laptop for much less? The tablet PC would be at least as good as the laptop and would offer the "touch screen" interface for those who like it. This "smart display" is the whole "network appliance" idea, which apparently just will not die, repackaged - the proverbial "pig with lipstick" ... or is it the Trojan Horse? Following the technology insider's path, the next move will be to "simulate" the versatility of the stand-alone laptop by having the "smart display" link up to a Microsoft server and an Adobe server and a Corel server ...etc. At first we will be given this "feature" at, or possibly below, cost (called a "loss leader" in marketing). Then, after a period of time, we will be forced to pay increasingly higher monthly fees to both access our software and to store our information. Pandemonium will follow... I can see it coming as clearly as I can see a storm coming on the Weather Channel's radar. Personally, I am taking my laptop and my umbrella.

A technical question; inventory tracking.......2003-02-24

I'm considering Smart Displays for a business application.

I don't know why the marketing (that I've seen) for this product is just the home market. Yes, I realize it works with Windows XP Pro which can be connected to using remote desktop connection, and there's a free upgrade CD for XP Home users.

It seems I could use it in a business environment, such as a warehouse, and connect to a Windows 2003 Server running terminal services, and attach a (USB) barcode reader--preferably the wand/pen type, or an RFID reader, to it to do physical inventory tracking?

Ok, I realize 2003 Server is not quite out yet (I have RC2). But wouldn't that be a good application for it? The inventory data displayed is always up-to-date, and there's no need to sync up to upload or download data. I think it would be a "killer" application for smart displays.

My main reason for writing this comment is to ask that question, but I do have a comment. I've looked at the V110 and V150 displays at CompUSA. They're not hooked up to any Windows XP Pro computer. So the ViewSonic demo kind of falls short if you're trying to figure out how they work or how well they work. I took my laptop which has 2003 Server on it to CompUSA, but those displays are not actually Smart Displays. They're fake displays running a little floor show.

Toshiba has pared an excellent DVD player down to its essentials for high-quality sound and image playback, making the SD-2109 a no-frills alternative to higher-priced models. With Dolby Digital and DTS digital-audio outputs, as well as composite, S-Video, and ColorStream component video outputs, we found the SD-2109 well-equipped to power any burgeoning home-theater system.

While more flexible DVD machines offer features such as analog decoding from Dolby Digital sources, karaoke-microphone inputs, and headphone jacks, the SD-2109 is by no means bereft of features. Besides traditional DVD features such as camera-angle selection, subtitling, and language preference, the Toshiba SD-2109 also offers three levels of zoom and reverse, and forward-play speeds from 1/8x to 30x. The Toshiba SD-2109 also does a great job locating specific sections on a disk through title and chapter skip as well as a convenient "time search" feature.

A nice touch available on this and other Toshiba DVD players is Video Black Level expander circuitry. With this function you can expand the picture's overall contrast range to derive richer, deeper blacks and finer tonal gradation, both of which we found enhanced low-light viewing. As expected, the SD-2109 proved extremely easy to set up and navigate, tiny remote and all. A super entry-level DVD player!

Can't they do better?.......2002-05-27

I would have given this-our first-dvd player 4-5 stars but it suddenly died after 2 years and 4 months. We got great sound and clear sharp pictures on our 36 inch screen. We purchased it on a credit card that doubled the warranty to two years and then......VCR's last longer than this "planned obsolescence" machine. I would suggest getting an extended warranty if available or plan to replace with the cheapest but most reliable models every two years, until the manufacturer creates a more reliable machine.

Solid Player.......2001-12-02

I've had this DVD player for 2 years and have watched hundreds of movies so far. Its behind in the technology curve now, but its reliability and quality are good indicators of the whole Toshiba line. I'm particularly impressed with the picture quality when matched to my Toshiba television set using the compositve video outputs - significantly better than the standard coax output and S-video output. The one down side is that it doesn't play any VCD format disks. My goal was to convert all my 8mm video to VCD format so that I could play them in my DVD, but I was unsuccessful. After scouring web sites I found that the Pioneer DVD players seem to provide the best support for playing all the diffent DVD formats, so that's what I'll probably buy in the future. However, if you're looking for a solid entry-level player - this one is it.

This is an excelent DVD player...Great video playback, DTS and Dolby Digital sound...And a low price make this machine a must have....

I have had my unit for months with no problems. I recently purchased a high end reciever and was overjoyed with this machine's Digital performance.

Surprisingly versatile.......2001-09-14

Though perhaps marketed as a "home hobby" kit, these nifty sheets have business applications as well. They can obviously be used on store windows, but they have another, somewhat unexpected utility: they stick to stainless steel. This can make them invaluable in kitchens, hospitals, or any other work area that uses a lot of stainless steel. It's worth pointing out that they also seem to stick on refrigerated stainless steel for long periods of time.

As for the complaint that they're more transparent than translucent, this can be remedied by setting up your design so that it has a translucent background itself. While I think it's certainly possible for Xerox to have made translucent film made of this material, the transparent film actually has broader application.

I've been using these for a while now and was delighted to find them here at a cheaper price than I've been paying at the retail stores. When I first got them I was a bit disappointed because the decals are really more transparent than the package let on. Maybe it's just my printer. I know that it's hard to make something on clear paper turn out anything less than see-through so I forgive them. Anyway, I found that I could back the transparent decals with opaque white adhesive shelf paper and make beautiful vivid decals. These decals print out very nice and clear. These are great for putting store hours in a window or making decals for your car. These have a mild adhesive so that they come off easily but make sure that you clean the glass well before applying otherwise they won't stick well.
