CRT ver LCD.......2007-05-14
This monitor was not as bright as the Sony I had before but Sony no longer makes a CRT monitor. I have an LCD monitor and when you compare the LCD monitor with this monitor the LCD is junk. This monitor has a good picture. The thing I didn't like about Viewsonic monitors is that is shows up in the Device Hardware and in the video properties as a plug and play monitor, instead of telling you the name of the monitor and the model number.
Good Looks, Poor Performance, Poor Support.......2005-11-02
Purchased ViewSonic G90fb 19" CRT based on other reviews. Much to my surprise the unit I received does not perform as expected. Monitor brightness varies depending on the windows that are open on the screen - when there is a large white window open (i.e. My Computer) the screen darkens and shrinks about 1 mm on all sides. When the white window is resized or minimized, the whole screen visibly lightens and expands. I can accept the fact that maybe this unit is defective, but the ViewSonic customer support is virtually non-existent: after trying for one week I have no response to 5 separate emails, the telephone support is inevitably 'busy assisting other customers' and 'experiencing high volume'. Based on my personal experience, I would strongly advise anybody against doing business with ViewSonic.
"Software not compatible with Windows" - yikes! .......2005-07-05
Just bought this, lugged it upstairs, onto the desk, etc., and when I put in the disk to load the software, I got a message saying "Contact hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows logo testing. Do not proceed any further or it will damage your system, etc" -- !? I am trying to get to the bottom of it, but so far, this hasn't been smooth sailing!
Excellent CRT for Graphic Design.......2005-05-02
I'm a graphic artist who uses 2 of these monitors side-by-side, day-in and day-out, 8+ hours a day 5 days a week. I haven't had a single issue with them since I got them new over a year ago.
Both are set at 1280x1024x32 on a 128MB Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 on Windows XP Pro. I have my taskbar along the left side of my left monitor. They are heavy-ish like any CRT monitor but aren't as deep as some 19" monitors. If you took a 19x19x19 inch cube, thats the space you'd need for this monitor.
A little education for you:
1. Like all consumer electronic equipment, performance will vary based on your environment. I have 2 identical models that were purchased at the same time, and even then I must use professional color calibration hardware and software to get accurate. By default they don't match. That's normal.
2. "Viewable" area IS 18" (diagonal) but that does NOT mean your desktop will fill that whole area unless you adjust the monitor to do so. I've never liked the marketing spin that allows 18" viewable to be called 19" monitors due to some technicality. Like 0-60 times on automobiles, it may be fact though it may not equal real world practicality. LCDs win it that respect; 19" on the box equals 19" viewable.
At work, color reproduction is more important than monitor size. So since good CRT monitors are more color true (very important for designing print projects) than LCD monitors, these monitors fit the bill. (I do use a single 19" LCD at home.)
Excellent Monitor.......2004-12-27
While, as other people have noted, this is not truly a "flat" screen monitor, in the most rigid sense of the word, it is indeed an excellent monitor that I am most pleased with. The refresh rate offered at the resolution of 1600 x 1200 appears to not flicker at all, and the color I see while playing video games (Battlefield: Vietnam; Farcry) is absolutely astonishing.
The only disappointment to this monitor, as I'm sure you've read already, is the fact that it is not as flat as an LCD screen. Don't let that discourage you from purchasing this, though, as it is an incredible monitor. I have not seen better color and performance from any other monitor in the nearby price range. Let me also assuage your worries by explaining that this is indeed a 19" monitor, with what appears to be exactly 18" of viewable screen.
I do not regret my purchase at all, and don't expect to upgrade my monitor for a long period of time.

The best monitor I've worked with.......2003-04-01
I'm an art director, almost crazy with color perfection. My G790 's been with me for five years. During this period, and thanks to its many color controls, I've managed to fine tune it as I never could another. And I'm talking about Sonys, Apples and one or another lesser brand.
My G790 is sharp, with no out-of-focus areas, luminosity is very consistent. And I'm using its full viewable area.
My system is a Mac, the video card an ATI Rage Orion, but I once had an iXMicro 128 connected to it. Doesn't matter, it had the same amazing image.
Maybe I'm lucky to have been blessed with an exemplar one. But I'd rather pass it to Viewsonic. This brand captured me with this monitor. Give it a try if you're considering a new monitor.

Decent overall, had some trouble with it........2005-03-08
The monitor has a nice, flat screen, takes as much space as my old 17" did, and features an UltraBrite Mode that probably won't be used much by me. The picture quality is pretty good, however, the problem I have with the monitor is that on its sides (especially on the right side), there is somewhat of a blueish hue. However, you really have to look hard to spot it, but it's there. I thought it might have been the monitor itself, so I returned it and got a different one, same model. After plugging it in I noticed the same problem.
I will be keeping it for now, since the 19" they sell locally here aren't that great either. :( The good thing is though, it has a 3 year warranty.
Gaming and Watching DVDs only**.......2005-02-23
I have had this monitor for 2 days and have tried every setting combination possible. The colors are bright and vibrant and when watching night or dark scenes on dvd the picture is amazing. I am not a gamer, so can't say how it looks for that. However, you cannot get a clear text no matter what your setting. I spoke to tech support at View Sonic and they verified that this monitor is truly designed for graphics and not text. Text is most blurry in center of screen and some words have such "shadowing" that you can hardly read them. Sorry View Sonic, but back to the store you go. Should have had that information in your technical description or on the box.

Fine while it works.......2007-09-09
This monitor always produced a good quality image (the "UltraBrite" is worthless unless playing a game) but only lasted a few months. Note that the warranty on this series of monitors only lasts one year instead of ViewSonic's traditional three. Clearly there is a reason. ViewSonic used to produce excellent, reliable monitors, it is a shame.
Great for the price.......2007-03-05
I just got this monitor for free from a friend who got a (or is it "an"?) LCD instead. It was manufactured in 2002, and saw almost daily use. I just set it up for a grammar school computer lab and it works great. Looks almost as sharp as my LCD on my laptop, and is an improvement over the old soft SONY 17" I gave them a few years ago (Gassy tube). The colors and geometry are fine. (NO CRT is going to be as geometrically accurate as a LCD, simply due to the technologies involved. I mean, really, a flying spot crt display has been around since the nineteen twenties...This is probably as good as they ever will get. Have you ever looked inside to see the strategically (hand done) placed magnets on the tube to counter stray magnetic fields? It is a HASSLE to get near perfect accurate deflection of an electron beam..plus you are dealing with tens of thousands of volts on the face of the tube to make these things work...scary, right? That's OK, you'll never feel a thing...) So, if you don't mind the extra energy draw involved with a 19 inch picture tube, (One and a half amps at 120 volts..it will help warm you on a winter's night...), get one. However, nineteen inch LCD's are also available cheap. I just got one for $[...] brand new with a rebate. Looks great. HannsG. Anyway, as I was saying.. I actually have a co-worker who opted for a big SONY instead of a LCD, and after a couple of years, he regrets it. But if you want a CRT, they are cheap. Or free. Look around...Try Craigslist. Or your local curbside. I actually picked up what I thought was a non functioning 19" SUN monitor (SONY) from a curb next to a city trash barrel.(I repair CRT displays and TV sets). Imagine my surprise to find it functioned like new. That's our throw-away mentality. My son has been using it for about three years. CRTs- your days are numbered, but like any dying technology, there are those of us who will hang on to you like dial phones and 35mm cameras. Or Stick shifts....or home made clothes...or books...

I have been using this monitor for 2 years now and it's perfect. Oblivion looks gorgeous on it, as well as everything else. Never had any issues. It's large, clear, and does it's job well.
AWESOME!.......2005-10-14
I recieved this monitor for a graduation present from high school. I am currently in my Junior year of college and I haven't had a singe problem with it. On top of that, my parents have a model before this one and it yet to mess up on them. I can't say anything about customer support, but I haven't had a single problem with the monitor yet.
Amazing picture, amazing value.......2005-07-14
I have not experienced a single problem with this monitor, except for one... When I first got my new Mac Mini, the monitor would not wake up when I woke the Mac Mini up from sleep but a new power strip fixed that problem. The monitor was CHEAP ($179) and that is why I bought it, but it quickly made its way into my heart. I have owned it for a year and a half. Nowadays I look at an LCD monitor and they pale in comparison as far as picture quality. I have a 30" LCD Monitor in my living room and it looks HALF as good as this monitor. I highly reccomend this ViewSonic monitor.

Our review is based on the fact our unit has not broken down in the month we've had it (unlike the other 1 review currently published here). We love this set. The picture quality is superb, even with SDTV via Time Warner digital cable. HDTV output is fabulous. Nice bright images with good contrast without the usual "noise" which was our primary criteria for choosing this unit. Sound quality is good for a bedroom but there are no audio outs for those wanting to add additional speakers (we didn't). It is VESA compliant and is under $1K usually. It also has PIP with an additional tuner (VCR) and can be used as a computer monitor. What more can you ask for a thousand bucks.
Nice while it lasted!.......2004-03-28
After only 3 weeks of infrequent use, this TV failed. All of a sudden there was no picture upon powering up. Prior to this I found that the clock setting feature didn't work. Obtaining service has been a nightmare. Zenith sent me to the closest service center, 30 miles away. A few hours after dropping off the TV, the service center called to inform me that Zenith told them it could only be serviced by the factory! Zenith refused to replace it with a new one. I've been given no idea of an estimated return date. Other than that, the picture was very nice, programming was easy and the set's attractive. Plugging in cables was difficult. There's only a headphone audio out, not left & right channels. Switching between input devices was slow as was changing channels. Setting favorite channels was very slow. Update: received TV-picture OK but clock still not working. Service Dept. said clock chip a known defect, but no date for fix. Why didn't they send me a new set with a good clock? After several calls to Service & Customer Service, Zenith agreed to refund the full purchase price upon return (again) of the set. Could've been much worse, I guess. Contacting Zenith was easy & the staff were pleasant and helpful, but I still wasted much time on this. Can anybody suggest a TV to replace this one?
