Great Flash for the Money.......2007-07-14
(Review is from Greg's wife, Marcy Worthington) I've been a professional photographer for over three decades and started using Vivitar 283 and 285 flashes years ago. I also teach photography and recommend these flashes to my students.
Both the Vivitar 283 and 285 have four automatic and one manual exposure settings. They work well both on and off-camera and can be easily used when "painting with light"; this technique is often used by crime scene and accident photographers when photographing large, dark areas.
These flashes aren't dedicated or TTL (meaning they don't communicate with the camera for "through the lens" metering) but they are extremely versatile and very powerful for the money. Don't buy these models if you plan to only use your camera on P (Program, essentially "point & shoot" mode) but definitely get them if you use the S (shutter priority automatic exposure) or M (manual exposure) modes and are serious about photography.

This is a great flash for those who do not want or have upwards of $300 to spend on a eTTL flash or something of the sort. This is my second 285 as I blew the circuit on the first one using the AF finder on my DSLR. It's kind of bulky, and is hard to find accessories (diffusers, gels, etc), but otherwise a great product.
Excellent Flash.......2005-05-15
That this flash doesn't have a swivel feature - is that a demerit? It also doesn't have auto focus nor is it "smart", TTL, dedicated or self learning. You can't make a phone call on it either. These complaints are as valid as the complaint that you can't get 40 miles per gallon from a 57 Chevy.
I bought my 285 in the early 80's so that's testimony to it's service and satisfaction and it being well built. You can still buy this flash. It's survived even after 25 years have passed. Has refined technological evolution made the 285 obsolete? NAY! Even with computer chip advancments in newer flashes the Vivitar 285 is still here holding a position. Why is that?
I have a dedicated flash that has auto focus, TTL and all - but I gave it to my wife. She likes it because you don't have to do anything to it... I don't like it because you can't do anything with it. There are no creative avenues to explore. I can control the 285 to do what I want.
Consider the respectable guide number, 120 at 100 ASA on the 50mm zoom setting. You can have the worlds best computer controlling your flash but without horsepower you may not have enough light.
It's all about light. Like a limo with a bathtub, a wet bar and a waiter, all nice except if the motor is a Briggs and Stratten lawnmower engine with a 3 quart gas tank you may only impress your mom with a smile and a slow ride once around the block.
Did we forget that what we need is light? 25 years later we are still looking at similar or less power as technology's (read, marketing's )freshest offering for today but the price for the same light power or even less light power, is higher. We buy what's new and we buy features.
We rush to lay out our money because we are very savvy photographers - (NOT!) Isn't the Minolta 5400HS ( also an older unit), a great flash and it sure does have more power than the 285, about A QUARTER OF A STOP MORE BUT you can pay 3 or 4 TIMES THE PRICE OF A 285. As the 285 remains available you're as likely to see me shelling out for one of these others as you are likely to see Hilliary Clinton waiting in line for day old bread.
I have the control, light power, and, no, the 285 isn't the best out there but the package for the dollar value is well established and pretty good. It's been kicking "A" for 25 years and it will for many more. I wish I could tell you something about it. Buy something else. I mean, you could get a silver one - maybe even with swivel.

Update April 13,2007:
My wife in her 3rd semester at Orange Coast Junior College in Costa Mesa CA, studying photography, has access to some great equipment including Hasselblad. This school is well known for its photo department. It is interesting to note that there are two portable flash units that they use there. One is the Lumedyne. That's a $2000 flash. It's features include an adjustable output . That is you can choose a guide number of 50, 100 or 200 and the recycle time is about 2 seconds because of a large shoulder strap battery pack. Other than that no other features. And the other flash they use is the Vivitar 285, under $100. Hmmmm - go figure!

Workhorse flash.......2005-02-21
I have used my Vivitar 285 Flash for over 20 years as an amateur photographer, and occassionally for wedding photography. It has never failed to deliver. The manual describes how to use this camera accessory with accuracy to achieve desired results. Duracell batteries work the best for rapid repeative use, though NiCads work well for a few shots (have back-up fresh batteries for professional shoots). I am buying a new flash only because my old one has finally given out after all these years. You won't be disappointed with this unit. JETLyles

Advert detail incompleate.......2007-08-03
I am sure the product sent me would have worked fine but the Amazon advert did not differentiate between the different models of the Canon 420 flashgun so i got the wrong one.
I found the manufacturer actually was based in my home town [why did I order from NY :-( ] and he happily swapped the item for the correct model free of charge.
The correct one works perfectly and I am surprised a simple piece of plastic can improve things so well.
10 out of 10 for the product 1 out of ten for the misleading advert on amazon.
Pretty good diffuser.......2007-04-24
This is a good small diffuser. You can just throw it in the bag and carry it around... you never know when a flash might come in handy...
I never use a flash without a diffuser. So If you are looking at this you should also take a look at: Gary Fong C3 Cloud Lightsphere II.
The only advantage this diffuser has to the C3 is that it's small and easy to carry.

Mostly stays in my bag.......2007-03-17
These work well at color correcting the flash, but please understand why/when you want to do that. Personally, I love having a warm background 'glow' when shooting under tungsten light with my un-filtered flash as key and the tungsten-lit background being about 1-2 stops underexposed, so I don't like the colored domes in normal situations.
The gold is exceptionally useful when you can't get the subject out of strong tungsten light, such as if they're real close to the light source, but I don't encounter that a lot.
I got the fluorescent one for when I'm shooting in fluorescent-only environments. Since I don't get warm light anyway I prefer to have everything the same/similar color temperature. It does a good job for this IF the color cast of the fluorescents match the light from the dome (as you probably know there are several temperatures/casts of fluorescents). Don't let the color of the actual dome fool you - when you blast light through it, it doesn't appear dark green like that.
I'm mostly disappointed as it does not fit real well on the SB-800, which is why I gave it 3 stars. It will stay put if you leave it alone, but if you bump into something it can be knocked off. It does not fit like the Nikon-supplied dome. I called Stofen about this and their response was essentially "Well, it mostly fits. Don't bump it. You can tape it if it bothers you"
Overall, it works well, but you'll be disappointed if you don't fully understand what you're doing.

Works as advertised with my FUJI F31fd.......2007-06-23
This is a little gem when paired with my FUJI F31fd camera. If works as advertised: With a fresh set of batteries it is ready to fire in 5 seconds but gradually falls to 8 seconds after 40 or so shots. There are 3 switch modes for setting the flash: 1. for a standard digital camera, 2. for a digital camera with 1 time pre-flash and 3. for a digital camera with 2 times pre-flash. All 3 switch modes work perfectly without a problem when F31fd is set to forced flash mode and no red eye reduction. But when the camera is set to red eye reduction mode, there is a delay which forces the flash to fire only on modes 2 and 3 but erratically. Synchronizing with the red eye reduction mode seems to be a hit or miss thing. Since I avoid the red eye reduction because it introduces a delay, I have no problem with that. But if you shoot with a camera on red eye reduction mode you may have a problem. I also like the fact that is soooo tiny but still so powerful that on small spaces, I set it to bounce up the ceiling as opposed to firing directly on the subject.

I purchased the Vivitar DF120 digital flash and tried it with my Panasonic DMC LX1 and Canon Powershot S100 digital cameras. It failed to synchronize with either camera at any of its three settings. Since both cameras are typical designs, it is likely that it will not work with your camera either. Skip it.

Three selectable velocity-scan modulation and fine (0.52 mm) dot pitch ensure a detailed picture.
The set's HD-capable DVI (digital visual interface) input accepts a direct digital connection with a DTV receiver and obviates any unnecessary digital conversions prior to viewing. A pair of 1080i-capable component-video input grants optimum connection with high-definition devices, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video devices. (For older VCRs and cable boxes, there's also a threaded RF input.)
