Suitable for the die hards.......2007-07-21

This camera is at best a basic unit. It has all that is necessary for the enthusiast that wants to test their true artistic ability. For those that are thinking that the camera is what makes a picture then perhaps they are better buying something that does everything for them like auto focus, speed and aperture.

This camera is completely manual. It requires thought in the composition of the subject, setting speed and aperture to suit the desired result. In the end it is the eyes capacity to take in the factors that make a picture and compensate for them using the cameras features as a tool.

The art of photography is not how smart the camera is but more how thoughtful the photographer is in preparing to take the shot. I bought this camera because I had become too complacent with auto everything and found that the quality of my pictures had degraded from when I took photos with a fully manual camera. Sure there is the option with many automatic cameras to set it to manual but then one is inclined to forget this option and take the easy way out.

Some aspects of the camera appear crude in its construction. It is a little small for my hands, but I am content with it all the same. The weight is slightly unbalanced, feeling heavy and the shutter feels like it is too physical in that if I were to take a photo in poor light the shutter action might jar the camera and cause unwanted blurring. I have not yet found this to be the case but then I have not put it to the test either.

For the price it is adequate and will function even if the batteries go flat. This is its biggest appeal to me as I'm sure that with four days of hiking in the mountains my digital camera's battery will undoubtedly be flat by the end. There is something romantic about film. You don't get the instant gratification that the digital provides but then you become more focused on making sure the shot is right.

While I read that film will never die I am finding that acquiring high resolution ISO is becoming harder to purchase. This is a bit disconcerting. It does seem that most film vendors favour poor resolution film to guarantee the purchaser that all shots will produce something due to the capacity for the 200/400 ISO films coping with poor lighting conditions. The sacrifice is the grainy low resolution images it produces. That's fine if you want arty photo's using grain as a special affect. I want 100 ISO B&W for its fine grain and yet in my town it seems it has long gone. The camera however is a good robust apparatus and great for travelling in rough terrain due to its rugged steel body construction.

From the Jungles to the Desert, Great Camera.......2006-06-07

Greetings, Hope this finds everyone to be in good health and happiness. I traded my minolta slr w/2 lenses and flash for the 3800N back in 2002 and have enjoyed it ever since. This camera is used primarily for B/W as well as continued learning of the fundamentals of photography and creative ideas. I have taken it through five different jungles in SE Asia, in the desert, and across fifteen states with no problems. If you have an idea of a grunts life, it isn't easy or clean. This camera takes the abuse and still performs they way it should. Maintain proper care and protection from the environment with all the accessories available and you 've got a great artistic kit at little cost. Have fun with this camera and be artistic.

It Compares with the Best of Them.......2006-04-05

For the past 30 years, I have been a devoted Nikon user, though I have a Pentax K1000 and assorted Pentax lenses that were given to me as a gift about 20 years ago. The K1000 was misplaced in a move a few years ago (I'm sure it will turn up one day when I finally get to clean out my attic), and I was longing to use a fully manual SLR. I took a chance with the Vivitar V3800N as the price was right and it came with a better warranty than a used K1000. It could also use all of my Pentax lenses which I had not misplaced. I have put this camera through the wringer and it has come through on every occasion. For those who complain that the Vivitar lens quality is lacking in quality and performance (which I find not to be the case), there is an ample supply of new and used Pentax lenses which produce results that rival my Nikons. I frequently use the Vivitar lens and am delighted by its performance. The camera is built solidly and performs solidly. Results are consistent and I never worry about damaging it as it is not costly to replace. So, if you ever have the feeling that you want to be a true photographer rather than the caretaker of a small computer that takes photographs for you, I highly recommend the V3800N. Indeed, Nikon thinks so highly of it that they sell it as the FM-10 and will continue to have it manufactured for them by Cosina as one of two 35mm SLR's they will keep on the market in the digital age, the other being the Nikon-manufactured F6. The Vivitar is a well-made bargain that delivers!! Buy it and enjoy it.

Great sub for the price........2005-01-08

I had looked at and listened to a few different subs from Polk, Klipsh and Jbl before finding the Velodyne sub at Costco for $150. This thing kicks butt with music. The bass is tight and powerful. I cant imagine a 10 or 12" sub doing much better. I have not had to turn it up over 1/3 volume yet and it shakes the pictures off the wall.
With movies, (what I bought it for), it depends more on which movie I'm watching. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy rocks with this sub, as does the Star Wars trilogy and King Arthur, but it was stangely silent with movies like Terminator 2 (surprising}, and Pirates Of The Caribbean. If not for this mild letdown I'd give it 5 stars.
The build quality is excellent and the amp has barely gotten warm in the short time I've had it. It has the binding post speaker inputs instead of the clip type. The only disappointment with the construction is that the cone is coated fiber instead of poly, but from my experience with this sub I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for some solid bass without spending a fortune.

Great Product.......2000-01-23

I love my Rex Companion. I got it to synch my Act 4.0 database (over 700 contacts) and my list of personal contacts from Outlook 2000 as well. I had no problems with the software once I got the hang of it. I'd recommend the clear lexan case some sites are offering for around 12 bucks because it looks fragile. With it in the case you can still read it but you can put it in your back pocket and not worry about breaking it. It is so small I can take it with me all the time (not like the large Palm and Visor devices). You can search contacts by various groups, company names, first or last names. I added the categories I needed for my business right from Act. I also enjoy reading text files from stories I have scanned and pasted into it in the notepad format. It's great to be able to pull it out at a moments notice and start reading Sherlock Holmes and the like!

Too many bugs.......1999-12-03

As a long time user of PDA's I loved everything about this unit. I even got use to quirky interface to enter data on the run. If you plan to sync with Outlook 98 or ACT 4.0 just forget it. It just does not work. I spent hours on the phone with tech support and could never get it to consistently being over my data in the correct format. The problem seemed to be all true sync related. Stick to Intellisync or Hot sync manager if you sync data on regular basis. Palm Pilot is still the best on the market but just wait for version 2 of HandSpring

Rex organizer.......1999-11-28

This is a nice product that has the advantage of being very compact as compared to other products in this category. However, I have experienced a great amount of problems in synchronizing with Outlook 98 contacts. Be wary of this problem if you are using these products. Also, the product does not include a calculator, which I find inconvenient

I've tried them all...Windows CE, Palm and now Rex. There is no doubt that the size is terrific, and it makes it possible to have it with you at all times. However, save your money and don't buy the Pro unless you need the memory. Input of info is downright painful and I've long since given up trying to enter events while disconnected from my computer. The synchronization software is also not perfect as it will only recognize 4 categories if you use it to organize your Contacts folder in Outlook. Otherwise it dumps all other contacts!

In short, a great device if you need a reference-only PDA, but virtually worthless if you're looking to enter appointments, tasks or contacts while on the road. Also, no calculator!

Size does matter...especially when the REX can fit in your wallet! I'm a PR Manager for a Fortune 50 company and once my wife got me my REX, my Palm just sits in a drawer.

It's small, convenient and stores those important names/numbers (media, business contacts, etc...) that I always seem to need when on the road. A steal of a deal...

These are really nice speakers. The highs are clear; the bass is tight. The midrange is a tad thin but really clean. I have a pair of AR 215PS bookshelf speakers at about the same price. The Wharfedales are flat out better in all categories. They fill a medium size room with smooth sound; they even look better. NICE!!!

Just to address a couple of issues. The Black Ash speakers I received have silver accents on the top and bottom front of the speakers, but not on the front center of the units. As I said above they look very good. The dimensions are 15 1/8" High X 8 1/4" Wide X 6 1/2" Deep. The Wharfedale manual that comes packed with the speakers lists frequency response as 48 to 20,000 Hz. The tweeters are fero-fluid cooled.

These speakers sound great for their size. The picture that amazon.com has representing the speakers is misleading though. The maple speakers shown have nice silver accents. The ones I received are in fact maple, but have black where the silver is represented in the picture.

Happily this day, my wonderful Wharfedale Atlantic 100's have arrived. I'm still waiting for my Harman Kardon receiver to show up, so tonight I plugged my barely decent Sony boom box receiver into them. It boasts a modest 3.2 Ohm preference, so I'm "pushing" the sound into the 6 Ohm Atlantics. The boom box has endured about 7 years of moderate tape playing. So to slap in an equally worn copy of Steely Dan's 'Aja', only to find resoundingly detailed and rich sound flowing out the other end . . . and I paid less than 100 dollars for these little guys . . . okay, Wharfedale, what is your secret!? I suspect that when the Harman Kardon arrives, and the 2 meet, the results will defy my greater sensibilities. To say the least. So my friend, treat yourself a little this day, and buy a pair!! And the speakers happen to be beautiful as well, elegant and matching their crystal sound with both class and style. January isn't even over, and I've already made my best purchase of the year!!

I'm very pleased and impressed with this set of speakers. Given the compact size, I expected to have to use a subwoofer to get decent bass response, but after plugging them in, I found it wasn't necessary at all. The construction is sturdy and looks to be very high quality.

Crisp and clear sound, but do yourself a favor and get high quality speaker cable. The difference is audible.

Before buying these, I emailed the company asking for more specs, and I got a response back the next day. Not only do they make high quality speakers, they also have excellent customer service!
